I think I can explain this one.
Gaming became mainstream is the easiest way to say it, companies saw the sweet honey pot that is a mass audience and started to develop games anyone can play. Making games that were easy to pick up and didn't require much depth or effort put in to become 'good'. With this they saw how some games sold better and then tried to copy them until games were homogenized into the same handful of games that they can make to make cash. Now throw in that major games feel compelled to pump more work into graphics and they can't afford to try something new because it just costs too much for major developers to take the risk.
Phone games also became a thing which open the flood gates for brain dead twats to call themselves 'gamers' because they have angry birds on their phone. New market, audience widens, gotta accommodate them to get paid.
Basically video games got too big and spread out, developers wanted to make more money with the larger audience and thus appealed to all of them, making games less interesting and more same-y. At the same time the people who previously never cared about games showed up and pretended to be gamers and with larger numbers dominated the culture. Even indie games suffer this since they tend to be fairly similar too, expect they rely on gimmicks and '''''retro''''' graphics so this audience can pretend to be from the golden age. So as usual, mainstream killed creativity and fun.
