Yooo, Cred Forums. I'm making an online trading card game called Forgotten Lore. A big thing about the game is that every game card is a Steam Inventory item, meaning it can be traded and sold with people online.
Since the last few were so informative and helpful, I'm going to be doing another giveaway today! All you have to do is post your full Steam URL in your post and I'll silently drop the game into your account. (include http, but not https or www)
I could really use some criticism on what is there, suggestions on how things could be improved (mechanically, balance-wise), and first impressions on the game.
Sent. Let me know what you think. And no, just the url like you did. I have a script watching the thread that will pick up any urls like yours and just put the game in your account. You won't get any notifications or anything, it'll just appear in your library.
Brayden Hughes
Mugosh better stop fucking whining like a little bitch and get some food, why the fuck does he think I care
Easton Rogers
Wow, that was fast. I'll be happy to give some critique.
So OP when are all the random coin-flip and dice-roll cards coming in? I want to know just when I can use pure luck-I mean, incredible skill and talent to win my matches.
Adrian Davis
Some big differences
>Instead of getting a new maximum of mana to use each turn, mana is persistent across turns and must be strategically managed >Cards don't take recoil damage when fighting other cards >Not a single RNG card skill from what I have seen so far >Unlimited decks A bunch of other shit too. Just try it, it's fucking free
Jace Walker
I vehemently despise RNG cards. For the sake of cardgame tradition, I have /one/ rng card planned. Beyond that, I don't plan on putting in any RNG cards. Not saying it absolutely won't happen, but I seriously doubt it and will avoid where possible. I think card games like mine should be about pure strategy - skill in planning - not luck.
However, I do see the appeal in adding RNG into the game. It adds some leverage for new players to not get 100% rekt from veterans of the game and get some lucky shots in against dumb bots. I think games like Hearthstone go a bit overboard on the RNG, tho.
>user makes a game and gives it out on Cred Forums 4free >Some fag on Cred Forums compares it to a popular game just because it's a popular game in the same genre Fuck off
Gabriel Lee
The foundations of all card games are built on RNG. I haven't played your game but have you somehow circumvented the need to draw a card (randomly) each turn from your deck?
Hearthstone definitely takes this to absurd degrees, but there are definitely ways to incorporate healthy RNG into a card game. Discarding a random card (holding your cards facedown for your opponent to choose which to discard), shuffling X cards into your deck and flipping cards from the top of your deck until you reveal X (for instance a land card) are just 3 examples I can think of off the top of my head from MtG alone.
I appreciate your enthusiasm but don't you think you might be taking it a little too far?
Julian Rivera
Wrong url, yo. I'd say it plays like a mix of pokemon and hearthstone, borrowing a few elements from each. But really, it's its own thing.

>Want to help out OP. >Didn't op into that retarded steam trade thing so I can't trade any items without a two week hold.
Why is that retarded phone shit on Steam, just let idiot kids get scammed. It's even more irritating because you need to validate it via email regardless.
Jordan Brooks
>Some fag on Cred Forums compares it to a popular game just because it's a popular game in the same genre*
*that also happens to look very similar to said popular game
The idea of tradable cards in a trading card game makes me smile. I'd love to be able to care about the cards I get, and give/trade the cards I don't with friends. steamcommunity.com/id/priestbilly/

I feel like I've seen too much generic fantasy settings in these digital card games. I want to see one with a different aesthetic. FGO comes close but is just weeb fantasy. The Astro Boy one could work, but it looks nothing like Astro Boy and is too stylized for any cameos to really shine.
What I'm saying is why did you copy the aesthetic of Hearthstone, Gwent, Eldar Scrolls, etc. rather than choose a different aesthetic or original style?
The short answer: it sells. The kinds of people who play trading card games are the kind of people who are hugely into fantasy settings. The long answer: I wanted to make it. I've been writing a book (of sorts) for awhile, and the lore of the game is being derived from this book. I don't plan on releasing the book itself, just take snippets of it and sprinkle it throughout the game. A fantasy setting allows me a ton of creative freedom and still stay a little grounded in reality. The game has a much darker tone than, say, Hearthstone, but a much brighter/colorful tone than Gwent (both of which I do enjoy).
OP. Where can I follow development? Got a blog or something?
Cooper Taylor
My bad.steamcommunity.com/id/BOBN242/ Sounds interestingly. If all the cards are. going to unique, as in if I trade one it's gone, how would one get more? Buy in the game through booster packs?
The game gives you a handful of starter cards to create your first deck with. This starter deck isn't tradable, so worst case scenario is you end up grinding against the bots for gold to buy packs to get back any cards you traded away.

here. Installing it now. Was going to ask if access for my wife would be possible as well. I'm more into card games and she's less into them, so maybe between the two of us we could give some good feedback. steamcommunity.com/id/pocketty
I'll never understand how normalfags eat up the same skeleton, elf, and orc designs ad infinitum. Is it really that hard to go somewhere different with fantasy? Hell, Blizzard managed it. It's just that Warcraft has existed for decades now so even that has gotten old.
Chase Taylor
Thank you, Electro here. Might have some fun with it.
Nolan Morgan
Thanks man, I'll play it when I get back from work tonight.
Jose Martinez
Worst case scenario I get raped and murdered in my sleep. Not much to lose.
I'd say a lot of my stuff is more inspired by games like Dark Souls than WoW, but I do feel you. Hopefully as the game matures I can get more of that unique darker stuff incorporated into the cards.
I tried to make two original TCGs in college. I'm familiar with the challenge of balance/mechanics and even just making it fun to play for more than eight minutes. Lemme see~ steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561197990467016/

Why does your Steam store page say it has Steam achievements but doesn't show any?
Two criticisms just from browsing your steam page:
1. The visuals need a lot of work. The card art is decent, but very generic. No real uniqueness to them. It's like something I'd see in an old D&D book or MTG card put through some photoshop filters. And your UI is incredibly bland and in some cases lacks texture. It all looks so dead. All in all you need to find some personal character and inject it into your assets. 2. Your description is a bore to read through. Everything is frank at best and vague at worst. Remember, you're trying to sell your game as much as you are explaining it. Some more descriptive phrasing would have worked wonders. Get excited about what you're doing!
tl;dr Your game lacks character based on what I see on your steam page.
Carter Evans
Doesn't this mean that a full deck of cards, which you'd need to play the game, would seriously clutter up your Steam inventory?
Blake James
Idiots like this guy are why marketing departments exist.
>game not done >bitches about the irrelevant store page
Kayden Harris
This. Seems a bit irritating
Noah Carter
Sounds like it'll just create a "Forgotten Lore" game section in the inventory and clutter that up only.
Easton Thomas
Oh, right.
Lucas Butler
If he didn't want people buying his game until he was done he wouldn't have put it on early access. Who am I kidding? Plenty of people put up ass games with unfinished assets for a quick cash grab. This looks competent by comparison.
Henry Jackson
So I slapped together the starter cards and began my career of card battling by having my anus rammed at full force twice by the bots. Good game OP. On a more serious note, are you planning on having any kind of tutorial, or explanation on basics? I can gather it plays similar to Hearthstone, but having never played that, I've been relying on my MTG knowledge to play this so far.
Nathaniel Jenkins
Just went through some bot matches and not getting any gold. :|
Luke Ramirez
My man, you've been working on this shit for years and years now. I sincerely hope you get it done while Hearthstone is still free. I don't know how populated the market is, but I like your gimmick and your perseverance for shilling on Cred Forums constantly. I also appreciate the free code for Scribble Space, even though that was forever ago.
I feel somewhat tilted that the keywords aren't actually on the cards, but only visible when you hover over them. This might be only because I play cardgames IRL (magic, etc).
Honestly if I was working on it fulltime I could probably finish the entire game, from scratch start to finish, in about 6 months. But, it's just a side project so its taking a pretty long time haha. About a year ago I scrapped the entire thing and started over. About a month ago I scrapped the entire server and redid that from scratch. I think we'll exit early access sometime around new years though, so we're still on track. I work 40 a week at a gamedev studio at my real job, so its def a challenge keeping up with weekly updates for forgotten lore.
>And your UI is incredibly bland and in some cases lacks texture For the main menu, this is especially true. I need to hire an artist to just concept something way better.
>based on what I see on your steam page Thanks user, first impressions (especially from just the store page) are super important and often overlooked. I do think you should play the game though, tell me what you think of the game itself too.
It will eventually have them.
Nah, his opinions are totally valid. I asked for first impressions and that is what he gave me.
Yeah, they fill up a section in your inventory under Forgotten Lore. I can't imagine too many people would actually be upset by this?
>planning on having any kind of tutorial SOON(tm)
We're redoing the entire card design, what you suggested will be implemented.
Can you give a less vague explanation as to what happened?
The rewards are scaled based on time. If the match is less than a minute you get nothing, you get maximum past 10 minutes. When playing against real players you get a multiplier of rewards if they have more exp than you.
sant
Landon Reed
>they fill up a section in your inventory under Forgotten Lore Do they also appear in the general inventory?
The cards being actual items is a fantastic concept, don't get me wrong. I'm just curious.
Daniel James
I don't think i agree to your ToS user, this is Cred Forums.
This is what it looks like for me. Only shows under the forgotten lore section.
Lincoln Roberts
Oh shit, I got it.
Thanks, cradbro.
I'll be sure to give it a full shakedown. What's the best place I can post it?
Adam Nelson
Is the time client side or server side for bot matches?
Benjamin Garcia
>LA Disgusting
Tyler Miller
Client sends "hey I'm starting now :^)" to the server. Then it says "hey, I'm done now!! promise!" to the server. Server just checks the delta between those messages to determine win multiplier. gl;hf script kiddie
Don't know why you can't deal with https. Most of the web-scraping utilities like curl have no problems.
Elijah Green
Thanks a bunch, I'll give it a go when I wake up!
Logan Wright
As soon as I click end turn, my opponents health is set to zero. My end turn button turns into exit. My opponent can still place cards and chat with me but I can't do shit to him.
Landon Martin
Hey cardanon, what happens if your game doesn't catch on? If it were me I'd be pretty sad that something I worked on isn't appreciated by others. There's funny cases like Blunderborn, but you seem like a chill honest dude.
Also, when is it getting out of beta? I got the game on one of these threads months and months ago but I've personally only seen like dozens of people on at once. I don't know what the blunt statistics are but it doesn't seem like it's big yet.
laziness. I noticed the bug after the first thread and have just been to lazy to add the one line of code to fix it
Pastebin your output_log.txt file from the game's installation directory/ForgottenLore_Data. Haven't seen this bug before.
sent
>what happens if your game doesn't catch on Not a big deal really. Yeah, I spent a lot of time on it. But really, it's just a hobby / resume filler. I have a fulltime gamedev job outside of this so its not like its a money thing.
>when is it getting out of beta Probably December/January
Zachary Walker
Just played a ranked game, and if the opp disconnects on their turn you can't do anything, nothing progresses after saying you won.
Ian Walker
If you hit escape you can use the menu to go back. The end turn button would switch text to say "Exit" as well, if not it may just be a minor bug. You get rewards if the opponent leaves, they should have shown. If not, let me know.
Ian Murphy
I didn't see any rewards pop up, but after completing a bot game i got far more than i had in previous ones, so i assume it just added it there.
I'm at work but I'll leave feedback when I get home
Anthony Murphy
Hey there, if you look at me you can see it shows negative.
Asher Allen
last time I played there was no deck diversity
it just seems like you thin down to your best stuff, poison fuckers and hope you get to start swinging before the other guy builds up
Make more better strategies please.
Asher Cook
I think Jammku is just trying to hack. He can't hurt your account, worst case is some losses on your account. When I get some freetime I'll throw him a ban and clear any games people have had with him from their records. Sorry about the sperg, anons.
Are they completely taboo or can people run around with a bot as long as they advertise themselves as such or something?
Sounds like a retarded question since I haven't started the game yet (because I'm at work) so I don't know if a bot grinding games 24/7 matters but I'm always fascinated with making bots for card games (poker, blackjack, Dominion, Hearthstone, Netrunner, etc.) and a new game sounds like a fun thing to check out.
Aiden Evans
I already beat you to it.

To set opponents health to one.
Basically just dump high mana minions and after 5+ minutes one shot the bot. Rinse / repeat.
Juan Cook
Sorry about the delay, anons. I just wrote a quick thing for banning users. Sent out a ban to Jammku, but required a server restart. You might have to restart clients for stuff to stop being buggy.
This works for now, but will get you a ban if caught. I'm going to implement something this week server side to cause an automatic ban if detected.
Nicholas Watson
I meant legitimate AI attempts, not boring cheats.
Any retard with CheatEngine or IDA can exploit random shit and modify program memory. It's uninteresting and not what I was talking about.
Go for it user. Let me know if you can do any interesting stuff. If you want to me chill about it, do me a solid and make sure its not on matchmaking 24/7.
Bonus points if you can make an entire bot client without the game at all (just packet sniffing for api calls) and keep the game in a valid state.
Aaron Anderson
Kinda disappoint there's no ban message.
Glad to be of service as always.
One last thing before I go back to work:
If you use a speed hack and memory edits (Cheat Engine) you can instantly join and defeat a bot, and get reward cards. I spammed this for about 5 minutes and had 10 new cards.
Julian Edwards
Daily reminder that the dev is a shady cunt and has been banned from agdg for shilling his shit games in return for favourable reviews.
You shilled on there for ages demanding good reviews on your other shit game and harassing people you gave it out to to Greenlight this absolute mess of a game.
What kinda ban is Jammku under? If it's an IP ban he'll just change and be back in two minutes.
If it's a Steam account he'll just F&F it over to a new one.

Hey OP,
I've seen you posting about this several times over the past months but had no time to log on my account to activate keys whenever a thread was up. Guess that's my chance to try something more interesting than randomstone now.
I don't really care. I don't have time to play Coty's card game any more for an hour or so and generally don't care to bother with card games as the meta is pretty much the same compared to literally every other card game ever. (Zoo, Control, etc.) So there's not a lot of substance to experience.
Just play it a few hours and leave a positive review. I know 4channers are cancerous as fuck but we gotta back eachother up or else reddit-bros and normies will take over.
Noah Walker
Fuck off shilling for good reviews for your shit game
He literally has a backdoor trojan in the game files
Logan Baker
oh shit. i remember playing minecraft with Cred Forums years ago and i remember coty. i think im still in the steam group
Jeremiah Ramirez
Consider suicide, cuck.
Dylan Ramirez
There's still a few other exploits. I managed to make a d/c hack that makes the opponent give up, and I'm pretty sure I found a way to put unowned cards in a deck and use them, but I don't know exactly how to pick the unowned card. Instead it's added at random.
yeah, I've been following the exploits since I've been getting a ton of reports over it. I've got them all on my todo list. It's all trivial stuff to fix, just haven't had time.
ForgottenLore.sys is necessary for the game its totally legit
Why are all these "hacks" a thing anyway? Does your server not maintain any kind of internal state, or are pub games p2p? Because p2p never goes well in the long run.
Logan Brown
i feel like you're lying, but i'm paranoid proof?
Carson Perry
Op, honest feedback from someone who played plenty of digital card games.
I love the idea of having itens you can trade and sell, but if you want your project to ever become something, you need to work on the aesthetics of the game. A LOT.
You wont believe how many times the following dialogue happened over the last year:
>(Person) I am bored of hearthstone, too imbalanced, too much rng. >(Me) Well, then try game X or Y, much better, content wise >(Person) Naw, look how ugly this game is, how stuttered are the animations, will just keep on HS.
don't belive the samefagging dev there's definitly a trojan in the game
Nathaniel Hughes
Jammku mad his account was royally fucked and can't play anymore. Betting he will leave a negative review. ;^)
Brayden Morgan
Got literally any proof to back that claim?
Noah Wright
I'd imagine with the game being in early access and being a solo dev project there are not many people playing yet. So dealing with hackers is probably still a case by case basis. I don't see an issue with it as long as it's dealt with swiftly, as seems to be the case here.
Robert Myers
You're overstaying your welcome, dev.
Leave now before shit hits the fan.
Hunter Flores
He literally went to bed you fucking autist. Consider suicide.

>tfw no smartphone because privacy paranoia >no steam guard >no trading without 2 week holds >too dangerous to use public numbers

You don't need to be able to trade to play. The game will still be put in your library if you post URL
ok so is my steam trading cards going to be used as cards in the game? also if so will your game crash if it tries to scrape my inventory and sees 2k cards?
