Honestly, Awakening and Fates are completely fine, if not above average rpgs.
I just think they're mediocre in the context of the Fire Emblem series, though Conquest was legitimately a lot of fun.
It's really not surprising they sold well, they have pretty wide appeal, even if opinions on it are pretty split.

Marketing is one of the few things this game did right. I'm baffled how the nips have such a stronger team of marketers while we get quality NoA advertisements.

Why do people say this like it's supposed to be an excuse? Fates' weakness of story can be discussed while acknowledging that the other games weren't the pinnacle of storytelling. And for some Fates has had the worst to date. The lack of lore and world building is real noticeable when comparing it to previous entries.

Honestly I think the separation was gonna hinder the plot not matter what. Especially the 3rd route because they had to write it into the other 2 in a way that would try to get people to be more interested in it, yet leave enough for the route to solve the issues presented in BR and CO which was a bad idea.

It's not a terrible game, it's a flawed game. It had a lot of things that were good ideas. The most common complaint is the plot, which didn't have a bad concept, but pretty bad execution. You couldn't tell that it was going to be badly written from the advertisements or the demo. Plus it was coming out after the most popular game in the series at the time.

Conquest has arguably the best gameplay in the entire series with the combination of skill awareness, smart enemy placement so you'll always have to sacrifice something from each skirmish, different kinds of objectives ranging from defense to seize to capturing enemies with valuables. The only criticism I can give it is aside from the garbage story is that character health is too low to account for the massive damage you receive from poison, debuffs, dual strikes and that forces you to go into dual guards a few times too many.

But it's hardest difficulties are literally more challenging than the older games.
