Early access. Why let people play complete portions of the game for free when you can have them pay you to let them play an incomplete buggy mess?

people still pirate even if there are demo so theres no point in trying
>inb4 Cred Forumstard says he doesnt pirate if theres a demo

The internet.

digital media and 42.6 gig demo downloads.

Youtube?

>tfw all those discs from gaming magazines
Fuck, you brought back some good feels, OP

This ontop of pre ordering. Devs realized a demo isn't needed when you can just shill to oblivion and have pre orders flood in.

betas

Big AAA companies. Because it was proven that games with demos sell less, I guess when players got a small taste of shit they didn't want to go back.

b-b-b-b-b-b-but I j-just t-t-try before I b-buy!!!!!!!!

They realized people would get disappointed in the demo so there would be less sales. They can earn off of uncertainty and being disingenuous.

Add that to the fact that demos cost

Why bother making demos when you can shill the game till everyone buys it despite the game being complete shit.

Demos are difficult to judge and make as far as what you decide to show. There are good chances that your demo could paint a bad picture of the full game, even if the game is good.

demos still exist

Piracy, early access, and game turning into gigantic set piece after set piece mess.

>preorders
except you can cancel preorders at any time. Anyone bitching about preorders is a fucking retard.

pirating does the same thing except... you know... the whole game's there

early access became a thing way after demos died

I guess most of the time only people who are interested in the game anyway play the demo
>best case after playing the demo: people are still interested, no potential costomer lost or gained
>worst case after playing the demo: some people didn't like it, potential customer lost
producing demos also cost time and money at the time when everyone should be focused on finishing the game

Not if there digital which are the majority of sales now.

>PSVR comes with a demo disc
Don't plan on getting it, but it was kind of neat seeing that.

bad games. they use advertising to sell games. they dont do well on their own merrit anymore. Most people have buyers remorse about most of the games they buy.

>people still pirate even if there are demo so theres no point in trying
This. If the userbase doesn't respect your efforts, then fuck them, especially since the said userbase is going to buy your stuff anyway.

It's more profitable to sell you lies and give you a pre-ordered pile of shit than it is to risk exposing the game to you and revealing that isn't the amazing experience that was promised.

Multiple publishers have said demos tend to hurt the sales of games, and on top of that require resources to make and put out that could be better put to use on working on the game.

>not if they're digital
yes, if they're digital.
steam allows you to cancel preorders, xbox lets your cancel preorders, even sony lets you cancel preorders. It's more difficult than a traditional call to a brick n mortar, but it's still possible.

when developers realised they can shill their shitty games on the internet instead of relying on demo discs

Demos hurt sales because people realize the game is bad before they buy it.

Publishers realized that giving people a chance to see how shit a game is before buying it is a bad idea.

This is also why most companies stop people making reviews until the game has been bought and shipped.

Low sales. It was proven that if you have a demo for a half assed game that the consumer won't buy it. Not having a demo is anti consumer in my mind.

>early access
>when this is only available on PC

That feeling going Saturday morning grocery shopping with my dad and buying the new OPM2, reading a bit on the ride home and then trying out all the new demos.

I want to go back.

Well that was fun to watch

I have bought several games that I didn't hear about before the demo was on a CD when I was younger

You mean the demo disc.
Demos are still common, perhaps even more so, they're just distributed online now.

Early Access is on PS4 and Xbox One has Preview Program.

This game's 'demo' sold me on the game.

tfw

>You will never buy a pizza and get a demo of MGS with it ever again

That just barely became a thing like a year ago also its not on PS4

You are wrong. Before you even pre order on PSN there is a big notice that says

>REFUNDS NOT ISSUED UNLESS ORDERED BY LAW
And i've tried getting a refund for a pre order before to no avail because its against the """""""""""""""""ToS""""""""""""""""

I think the Sony thing depends on which State/Country you're in. They explicitly say that it's non-refundable except where prohibited by law in the legal text on the preorder page for digital games.

Thats a pretty sweet line up of games on a demo.

>that one demo disc with a trailer for GT3

youtu.be/sdlsz6UBWY0

I still haven't played it

No, I haven't seen a game demo in the last 5 years either.

Its not like i was gonna buy the game anyways

I've never had a problem calling them up and cancelling a preorder. Usually only applicable for a refund to the wallet which is less than ideal, but still, it's an option.

Know what else is against the terms of service? Game sharing on various accounts. But it's still a fucking advertised feature within the accounts of a primary PS4.

We did. Games with demos usually sell way less than they should because 99 percent of the time the game is shittier than you think.

store.steampowered.com/freestuff/demos/

It's more a showroom than a demo considering most PSVR titles wont release until months after it releases

I wonder who could be behind hiding their broken games behind pre-orders.

not for anything worth having a demo for

/thread

I still have this one

When companies noticed how fucking retarded people were pre-ordering games they didn't even knew they were going to like or work.

You must live in a State where you can. If you don't then they tell you too bad, they can't help you.

I have the other two. Didn't even know that one existed.

publishers killed them because demos make bad games sell less

wow.... and they say microsoft is the gaming devil

Games are already released unfinished these days, can you imagine how broken demos would be?

>Mfw gamesharing ever since PS3 days and been getting free vidya for years

Being a poorfag was suffering sometimes but thank god for that feature

THE ICE AGE

Demos are still being made but they are called "betas" now.

demos reduce sales

But that's what they are, numbnuts.

>THAT FUCKING INTERACTIVE T-REX

Jesus fuck that shit was the best.

This
/thread

You mean physical disc demos? Because demos are still a thing.

Thread theme

>mfw demos actually made devs put effort into their games so they didin't suck

I first played Medevil on a demo and it was so good, I had to get the game

I have a lot of jampack discs.

youtube.com/watch?v=AF3HDph4Ki0

PS1 demos got me in to Armored Core, Final Fantasy and Tony Hawk.

...

Sony and their false advertisement tactics

I don't think you realise you had to pay for demo discs. They came "free" with magazines sure, but those magazines were quite a bit more expensive than anything else.

Remember this?

I remember using one of those PS2 demo discs to softmod my PS2. You burn a disc with homebrew and then when you launch a demo, you hotswap the demo disc for the burned disc and it would load up.

this

>$7 for 5-10 game demos and a magazine that gave a lot of info considering internet wasn't as widespread until the early to mid 2000's
Compared to
>$30-60 for access to one unfinished game subject to change or be suddenly done with no quality control, and the only thing close to 'demos' is watching lets player talk loudly or shill over gameplay

i-impossible!?

>Those demo discs that came loaded with game saves

Was fucking neat to unlock all the characters/boards in SSX Tricky.

Is this a human?

I can't read slav, what does it say?

youtube.com/watch?v=h74f7pimkHM

>hearing this for weeks until I actually purchased my first game

Gaming was definitely an experience back then, from investing to information gathering and other shit.

People finding out how shit the games were before release started hurting sales.

Out of curiosity, what demos did you guys play a lot?

>Future Cop: LAPD
>Silent Bomber
>Nightmare Creatures
>ICO
>Dead or Alive 2
>Project Zero/Fatal Frame 1

I spent about 48 hours on the Nioh beta demo

Switch from print magazines to digital articles on gaming

For some reason it was affordable and worthwhile to release demos in the form of physical discs with magazines, but not financially viable to host demos for games

Demos aren't dead. See: nioh.

Internet.

>That Viewtiful Joe 2 demo that wiped your entire memory card

I remember a long time ago I ordered a pizza from Pizza Hut and it came with demo discs for PS1 and Dreamcast, shit was so cash.

Is this the unholy monstrosity that wiped my data clean off the card?!?

Digital distribution

1 game

That glitch baffles the fuck out of me. Why is the demo even able to access the memory card in the first place?

The first WWF and airblade on ps2. The shiny new graphixs kept me going for a month before I got an actual game.

Maybe they wanted to add data on your memory card so when you buy the full game it gives you extra stuff.

youtube.com/watch?v=Vo9URzNvHsg

>airblade on ps2

I can't believe I forgot about this game. I played the fuck out of the demo when I was a kid, but I only got the full game this year.

youtube.com/watch?v=aciQpiUklTs

do u have source on this pic. I want this JAV goddamn it

I first heard of parappa the rappa from a demo disc

>MGS3
>Area 51
>Silent Hill 4
>Prince of Persia 2

Were there different disks or something? The one I had had stuff like Tak, The Incredibles, and ofc Viewtiful Joe 2.

nvm, I found it

1Pondo-092415-159 - Aoi Shirosaki

I got a free copy of Wild Arms 3 out of the deal. I think it was a good tradeoff.

I was also very active on the internet then so I already got the warning through gamefaqs or some gaming website.

...

That's why devs hate PC
>inb4 consolecuck
>inb4 denuvo shill
>inb4 richfag

>when you played the viewtiful joe 2 demo

Because it's easier to hide a shitty broken game behind a pre-order than it is to hide it behind it's own gameplay.

Power Stone on the Dreamcast
I never bought it

As a PC user : This all of this

You know what pisses me off?
I bought a physical version of civ 5
It requires Steam. The disc in the box is basically just a steam installation exe
with a piece of paper with the code. Now, In the off chance that Steam was to die and go out of service, Unlikely but hey nothing lasts forever, What the fuck is this box going to do me?
And, I know exactly why its like this to fight pirates. Pirates are the reason devs do this shit.

the real reason:

demos cost money to make and eventually somebody figured out demos actually HURT sells.

But piracy was a lot less when demos were a frequent practice

I played the Power Stone 1 demo nonstop too but never bought the game.

I definitely bought the sequel though, it was the "next gen" smash bros before melee came out.

piracy on a 56k modem kinda sucked donkey dick. at least downloading NES roms only took around 3 minutes back then.

AAAAAAAAAAH. Fucking flashbacks man. What style, my god.

This song was way better and you know it.
youtube.com/watch?v=aauzEVlmEJ0

Lol just keep buying there shit then, to "fight" piracy

Are people like this real? Sometimes I read posts and I wonder does this person exist? How long have they been existing? For what purpose?

curently playing the dragon quest builder demo

>game doesn't sell as much as devs wanted
>"fucking pirates it's their fault, they're stealing our profits"
>devs place drm in games
>"fucking devs putting drm in my game, I'll pirate it to teach them a lesson"
>devs see people pirating the game
>game didn't sell as much as they wanted
>"fucking pirates it's their fault, they're stealing our profits"

get your head out your ass

>people are still retarded and blame piracy for everything

No, devs stopped making demos because it allows them to keep people uninformed of the quality/enjoyment of a game until they buy it

>anime fag reaction image
>repeats the same sentence twice
typical anime fags everyone go back to Cred Forums

Twitch.

Pre-orders

Why bother convincing people to buy your game post-release when the retards will pre-order it anyway

Demos actually backfire when people don't like the demo. Pre-orders don't

dont blame yourself

stuffed crust pizza will never taste as good as it did during the 90s

yeah i agree, that demo disk. goddamn nostalgic as fuc

Damn, clearly someone knew what they were doing when they selected those games

nostalgia threads like this make me horribly depressed and want to drink profusely for the rest of the day.

what are some good antidepressants?

people?

>Have shitty internet
>D44M is on sale for like $30 physical
>Buy it, remember being told that there's usually a backup copy of the game on the disk you can install from if you don't have internet. (forgot where I heard that, Might have been a fever dream a few years ago)
>Disk is only 6GB
>Have to leave it to download for 24 hours straight where using any other internet on my computer slows the download to a crawl.

Pirating isn't even an option with internet this shit. I had a bit of fun with the game though, until I accidentally clipped through the map and skipped half of a level, missing the collectables.

It depends on a person by person basis. Go to a doctor or specialist and try. It's basically a trial and error process.

>demo disks were almost exclusively a playstation thing
>this rose them to a place well beyond the top of the console market
>competing systems lacked demo disks
>eventually non-PS platforms became popular (Xbox, PC)
>demos died out

whoah really makes you think something something spongebob quote BAZOOPER etc

Remember when cheatcodes were a thing? And getting a free demo with a copy of a game made by the same/similar developer?

>Buy R&C: Up your Aresenal
>Enter code at menu
>Play a level of sly raccoon.

Unfortunately devs and publisher's are too scared to throw demos out there and risk damaging their sales. Packs of demo's work better than single demo's anyway, people are more likely to find something new and interesting they didn't know about before, than to realise "oh this game isn't as good as it was hyped up to be".

Cheatcodes always have been, and always will be, debugging tools. Modern cheatcodes are just random shit for the sake of random, like explosive fists in GTAV. Before they were quick data inputs to cause the game to behave in a specific way to test out certain aspects. Game development came a long way since then, and cheat codes were on a sharp decline since 6th gen.

>Play a level of sly raccoon.

Try like five of them, and you had all of Paris at your disposal for the duration of the missions.

Right, it was the tailing dimitri mission, the nightclub mission, and I think the jumping on sewer grates mission? I remember playing that so many times.

Underrated post

It also had the first Cairo museum level from beginning to end.

According to publishers, they decreased sales on most titles.

In accordance with sturgeon's law, that means they did their job too well.
