No. If there's one genuinely legitimate criticism of modern Pokemon designs it's the legendaries. Gen 4 was the worst of it, thankfully they've eased off since, but there was a point where legendaries were all just dragons covered in metal spikes and stripes and glowing spots. Gen 5 then proceeded to have tons of literally nobody legendaries that were so bland and boring. One of the few good things Gen 6 did was having like 5 legendaries, all of which were fairly unique.

I'm saying the ideal is the obligatory box legends and their trio master, such as the Tao trio, then a trio of roaming or hidden elemental legends, such as the Regi trio, then the big Mewtwo guy, such as Deoxys or Genesect, and then an event legend or two, such as Celebi or Victini. That's about 7 legendaries, that's a good, simple number. Having a couple extra event legendaries also allows Gamefreak to keep interest. So really about 8 legends is fine.

The worst legends are always in the gens with 15 of the fuckers. Heatran, Cresellia, the genie trio, the muskateers, Latias and Latios etc. They need to cut down drastically. Two trios, a big fella hidden in a cave and then a couple of event Pokemon. That's all they need.

Actually Lati@s has its own gimmick of being the first gendered mon and technically version exclusive

The Musketeers were pretty bad, but Gen 4 was just so fucking bloated. They had the box legend trio, then their master, then the lake trio which were fucking bland as hell, then Cresellia, Shaymin, Manaphy, Phione, Heatran, Darkrai etc.

Manaphy is really the only interesting one outside the box legends because f its uniqueness.

I consider "the Mewtwo" to be the big mystery Pokemon that is unrelated to the box legends. Deoxys, Darkrai, Genesect and I guess in Gen 6 it's Volcanion? I dunno about Gen 6. They only really started the trend in Gen 3, since Gen 1 had no box legends, and Gen 2 hadn't really got a formula going.
Ideally they really shouldn't follow a formula, because then each gen would be more unique, but Gamefreak has autism and needs to follow patterns or their heads all explode.

Darkrai is an anomaly, it's a "duo" legend like Lati@s

Sandshrew's Ice/Steel is essentially a "reverse" typing. But any kind of switch around between Ice, Rock, Ground, and Steel would have been called "reverse".

Vulpix's Ice isn't a "reverse" type. That would have been a Water or Grass form.

Exeggutor's new Dragon typing sure as FUCK isn't a reverse type. Dragon has literally nothing to do with Psychic.

Meowth's Dark typing is more of an "inverse" than a "reverse". The reverse would would have been a ghost typing.

Marowak's typing has literally nothing to do with the original, but his Alola form has much more to do with his origin story than anything else.

I like it how everyone seems to have a completely different, yet comprehensive image in their heads of what Pokemon is "supposed to be like", or "supposed to be about".

I look at additions like Totem Pokemon, Z-moves and Ultra Beasts and think that Game Freak is finally moving into territory they could have explored 18 years ago, incorporating things that add to the JRPG experience, like boss battles with slightly different rules than the usual trainer/wild Pokemon battle. I look at the Island Challenge, and I see Game Freak finally wanting to change things up enough that they don't even call the challenges "Gyms", even if they're possibly very similar in structure in the end.

But everyone else screams, "no, that's not Pokemon", says "man, they're really jumping the shark", "goddamn, they're running low on ideas", etc. and I just can't understand. What DO you want out of the series, if it's NOT this?

Pokemon is generally broken to favor using 1 pokemon.throughout the game, I wouldn't be surprised at all. It takes a lot more time to level up a team evenly.

If you mean for each individual pokemon to level, then still no, because some pokemon level faster than others and additionally in many pokemon games you run out of or nearly run out of trainers which are way better to level on. It is also just annoying to try and spread your HMs out among your team as opposed to using 2 of your slots for HM slaves. Yes, seriously. Pokemon has horrible animation and menuing. There is no excuse for a turn-based RPG which solely consists of menuing and overworld movement to be so bad at both of those things. For example, I can't even imagine how fucking stupid your team would have to be to make a game like pokemon keep turning before moving in for so many generations, when the only purpose it has is to search for hidden items. That sounds like a reasonable excuse to fuck your movement system. The pokemon series would play so many times faster if it didn't force you to watch so much slow shit, even with all the options set to fast/off.. Go look at something like Pokemon TCG 2, where the menuing is actually reasonable, it is night and day.

True, but it isn't really about the point of how the game is meant to be played or what the player finds enjoyable, it is about what is expedient. The point is that balance-wise it is poorly done, and the game is actually easier and faster to lean on only 1-2 pokemon, a huge amount of players do it. I did it both as a kid and adult, probably for different reasons. It really applies to both early and endgame, too. A few levels makes such an insane difference, and it would be absolutely a hellish grind to level up for someone like HGSS Red or Steven endgame when you could just stack some x-items on a single leveled up pokemon and wipe the floor.

The overhead of sitting there micromanaging your pokemon like that is just as annoying as before especially thanks to the aforementioned menuing. Just get an HM slave. You could maybe use good decent HMs like surf or strength if the pokemon in question is the right attack type.

Can't say I've ever been bothered by the perceived slowness of Pokemon games except for the gen 4 games. Man, those games sure took their sweet time for anything to happen, be it in battle or the overworld. That probably had an influence on why I think gen 5 is the current peak of the series.

You can beat those guys with zero grinding, and even with the same X item strategy if you so wish. Pokemon is pretty easy at the end of the day, no matter which way you cut it. I guess what I'm ultimately getting out of this is that to me, running the game with only one Pokemon sounds deadeningly boring, while it sounds like you just want your 'suffering' of playing the game in the first place to be over as fast as possible, and you believe this method to be the best for that purpose.

In Platinum I used a Bibarel with a moveset of Rock Smash/Rock Climb/Strength/Surf, but I treated it as a full-fledged member of the team, not just something to take along for convenience. It was a surprisingly effective moveset, Surf for times you needed a special attack, especially against Rock/Grounds, Rock Smash when you needed to whittle down a defensive opponent, Rock Climb and Strength to finish them off.
