MS has never "won" a console generation and they're already trying to move everyone to Windows 10.

Sony is just a mess. They had the world's strongest name in portable music in the Walkman before deciding that they couldn't be fucked to try to compete with Apple. They had nice TVs before letting their lunch get eaten by Samsung. They sold the Vaio line. Sony Pictures miraculously owns the rights to Spider-Man but can't do anything worthwhile with it. I wouldn't be surprised if Xperia gets chopped off at some point. Music unlimited was WAY late to the game. Playstation is the one thing that works at Sony, but I can see them becoming a brand name of specialty gaming PCs in the future.

Post 2011 has been the toughest times Nintendo has ever seen. Even so though, they sold 70 million units of dedicated gaming hardware and they're the only thing that offers something that gaming PCs don't. They're gonna hold out the longest.

If Microsoft really wants to make this video games thing work, they should just buy Valve IMO. Go to them, say, "Here is the XBox brand, do whatever you think is best with it."

Nintendo has already gone portable-only with the NX being a follow up to the 3DS and not releasing a follow up to the Wii U.

Sony will ultimately be the last one standing unless everyone abandons consoles for PCs or smart phones in which case Sony is screwed.

Nintendo, for a few very valid reasons.

1: They've lost hardware presence in the gaming market aside the Wii, which was a flash in the pan fad that is not coming back. Since the 90's their hardware sales have dwindled except for the Wii's astronomical performance that sold on a 1 time gimmick invention.

2: The afformentioned "lightning in a bottle" they're chasing with gimmicks has fried them once with the WiiU, and that was NOT '''''JUST''''' their poor unveiling of it, or their poor marketing. No...rather it was their handling of deciding hardware (which shot them in the foot with 3rd parties, which whether you wanna scream "WE DONT NEED CALL OH DOODY TRIPLE A SHIT", which was on WiiU I remind you, is important whether you like it or not.) and their complete reliance of a gimmick to sell said weak hardware.

3: Nintendo is a corporation, not your friend, and not a game industry hero despite the fact that yes, they restored interest in gaming after the 80's crash. Even if they have a lot of money to sustain failures, their investors, shareholders, and board members want to KEEP their money, not piss it away with constant failed attempts at hardware. Nintendo is NOT a private company, so if the majority want to push them to 3rd party to save face IT WILL HAPPEN.

4: Their IP's as memorable and pop culture as they are (proven by the mindblowing success of pokemon GO) will not save them if they continue to crank out stale, samey, gimmick reliant, ultra safe no-risks-taken first party titles at a slow rate. They have to invest in some studios, get some bigger teams making games, and fill the gaps in software. they addressed this but sayin and doin are two different things.

tl;dr, sales matter, hardware matters, 3rd parties matter, interest in gimmicks is dead and the fad has passed. Nintendo has to play ball or be forced out.

Microsoft already has. Xbox is now just a brand for Microsoft's gaming division and they'll only put out hardware to keep people in that PC ecosystem.

All Nintendo does is gaming and the future of games is in handheld systems, not neutered PC hardware. Nintendo is the only company capable of properly navigating the handheld market.

Sony will leave the console market kicking and screaming since they rely too heavily on the TV, an increasingly irrelevant screen in people's lives and they put out neutered PC hardware themselves.

I think the question is more, where are consoles going as an industry?

Obviously consoles are the dominant force in gaming, as much as we love to think of PC users as the only real "gamers", consoles tend to be where the bulk of game sales go (I think Witcher 3 was about 70% console sales) and they're only increasing in popularity, look at how many PS4's have been sold in it's lifetime, faster than any other console in history.

So I think we may see Google and Samsung try to break into the market, maybe even Amazon, but everyone's aware that oversaturation helps nobody. If Microsoft bows out of console sales (unlikely, Scorpio shows they have at least a 10 year plan), then we'll see some new people jump in. Until then, I think it's going to stay the same for the next 15 years or so, with MS/Sony dominating, Nintendo picking up the scraps from their niche position and PC as an alternative

Microsoft is likely to release dedicated gaming machines that run Windows under the Xbox branding, and Sony will basically be doing the same thing with very similar hardware except a custom FreeBSD build instead of Windows. For all we know, NX is a smart device.

And why should it? Once you get to a certain point, you have to juggle affordability with performance. PS4 and XBone are not interesting to me in the slightest because I have a $1,200 PC that can outperform both of them. Nintendo is far cheaper and has more games that I can't get on the PC.

Reason being is that they are getting closer and closer to a shittier version of PC with no advantages (old ones like being cheaper (include online pay), being simpler to use, being plug and play are dissappearing).

Nintendo is more casual and the similarities aren't as clear.

MS are never leaving the gaming industry, before Xbox they were one of the top tier PC Publishers (Age Of Empires, Motocross Madness, Close Combat, Flight Sim) and their revenue is only $2 Billion behind Sony these days. 360 and xbone were profitable and xbox was a sunk cost project that made less of a loss than expected never mind the whole thing is just a profitable R&D operation for their enterprise sectors these days.

And even then, if MS decided to sell their gaming assets and division completely. This is exactly what would happen. Samsung would buy it all out and rape Sony in every single orifice. Fuck COD map exclusivity, Samsung will buy Activision itself just to shit in Sony's cereal. Same with LG.

It's one of the funniest things seeing Sonyfags say they want Microsoft gone. It's like they want to see Playstation obliterated by one of the Korean Giants and the dick of reality to slap them in the face.

Microsoft's end game where they will sell the Xbox W10 OEM to other companies might mean we might end up with a Samsung and LG version of Project Scorpio as Microsoft will make it like Surface, a reference box. Microsoft has already started abandoning the console market by creating their Xbox eco system on PC. Essentially Xbox will just become something like Steam.

Nintendo has already started the conversion to mobile, so I see them slowly abandoning the console market till they'll eventually either only release handhelds or software on other devices.

Sony now I think will just keep going until consoles actually do become irrelevant or until they go bankrupt. They'll keep going until they grind to a halt.
