Because of this they usually pulled from both western and eastern culture and blended them into their own works.
They didn't have a huge otaku culture they were apart of and were usually fans of western and eastern entertainment (Dragonball, gundam, star wars, lotr, etc)

However the people creating now are the type of Otaku who grew up on 90s anime and video games and never branched out into anything else outside of it,
and this has lead to a very incestuous entertainment industry that likes to prioritize the recycling of older ideas rather than innovation and experimentation.
This is very prominent in anime and jrpgs now.

Isekai anime has been around for at least 30 years, possibly longer and they don't really follow anything from Narnia other than people being transported to another world, which is too general anyway. As for LoTR, it's no doubt that most fantasy anime can trace a lineage back to it. Of course I'd say it's more of an indirect influence with it going LoTR -> tabletop RPG -> cRPG -> Drangon Quest, with a lot of fantasy anime being derived from DQ. They'll likely be treading a fairly fine line with Tifa; as OP says, she's hugely popular and VIIR is an extremely high-profile game, there's a strong chance they'll need to tone down her original costume's sexiness in order to stop idiots flipping their shit about sexism. That being said, I wouldn't expect it to be full body coverage or anything, they'll probably give her shorts or spats instead of the leather skirt for example, and the game likely won't specifically sexualise her.

Skyward Sword was so much worse than mediocre, and there's been a sharp and frustrating increase in hand holding since we moved to the 3D.
