And the details we do know so far have been pretty shit worldbuilding-wise and story progression-wise.

FFXIV is a mediocre game (of course, it's an MMO). I played it for a day after throwing it away, it had no story nor worldbuilding at all.

The story was actually pretty good, so long as you have enough information about Final Fantasy XV to understand what's going on and can appreciate the new information given by the movie.
