BALDURS GATE

I'm about to play through the Baldur's gate trilogy for the first time in one giant massive playthrough using these mods.

What am I in for Cred Forums?

restarting and making a better character

what?

I fucking hate how true this is. I've never made it past bg1 because of this.

It makes me ill that I have such insufferable autism in regards to minmaxing for this game alone.

I'm doing a blind run with no knowledge of the game or much knowledge of tabletop isometric RPGs in general

It's possible you'll hate it, especially if you don't know about tabletop rpg's. But it's also possible you'll have a really good time with it especially if you don't know anything about the story and just take everything as it comes to you.

I won't hate it. I obsess over difficult RPGs and pen and paper shit. I just haven't played the originals.

minmaxing is not necessary to do well at bg

Blade is a fun bars class kit, also cavalier.

The most overrated RPG in existence (same goes for the sequel) which led to the mediocre tyranny of Bioware over the Role Playing genre for over a decade.

I have an idea for a character in mind. I'm currently getting everything installed from the GOGfree game website with the BG 1 and 2 complete edition then I need to install all the mods.

What do you think about a transmuter main character?

Is there a way to have a mage with two hand weapons bastard swords ?

Well then you'll have a good time probably!

Oh shut up. You sound like a fun guy to be around.

Not an argument.

I don't even have anything to argue against because I've never played it. At all.

if you want a mage to fight aswell you need to multi class as a fighter / mage and you can't cast while wearing armor. but a fighter / mage isn't a bad combo
specialist mages are always better than a plain mage because they get extra spell slots but that's the biggest difference really they dont play different to regular mages

>using these mods
Which ones?
Give me the list, I've modded the shit out of BG and know the ones that are garbage by heart

Is there a glass cannon type where I can go with no armor/major dps with a 2 hander and other spells?

tamrielfoundry.com/topic/the-ultimate-baldurs-gate-experience/

This website. I'm also running on my widescreen laptop 1600x900 resolution I believe so I'll have to get some mods to make it playable.

>Today's update brings a hot-fix for tooltips on Macs, as well as achievements localized for Brazilian Portuguese and a minor crash fix on the Options menu.
>Lose mod compatibility for this
FUCK YOU STEAM LET ME SET THIS SHIT TO NOT UPDATE EVER
Also I realise I can just play it from the folder and that gog connect has connected bg1ee but still

I'm going to play the original. Not Enhanced edition.

I heard there are more mods for original and mods enough to make it way better than the enhanced.

Well most of the mods that people use from the original work with ee too but they've been fucking around with the UI and some other things and just ruining it.
Which is a shame because pre EE v1.3 I would have recommended EE over the original but now... yeah just get the originals.

Thanks. I have a question though. In some peoples game I notice that the UI and the overall game is brighter and more vibrant. I remember trying BG2 last year and the UI and everything was very dark to the point where I couldn't differentiate one menu from the other. What's with the difference?

youtube.com/watch?v=IbnQ2UhjgqQ

For example, this version I like a lot. It looks the best. Especially the menus.

My brother's like this too. For him, the thought of having a diminished character build just breaks up his attention span with its neurotic energy. He basically can't put down (forget) the thought, leaving him unable to return to the immediate appearance of the game. The rest of the game loses so much significance relative to the min/max anxiety that he's willing to just restart it over and over. for its sake.

What loosened me up was the realization that the min/max quality of a character didn't have to be close to perfect for a character to be fun. Drawbacks in a character build can make for a more intoxicating playthrough, really, so the min/max shit really isn't so central anyways.

Uhh did you fuck up a mod?
I don't know what would have caused that otherwise.

youtube.com/watch?v=1y1sYYQzXb0

this one looks nice too.

>spending 30 minutes rerolling stats to get every single one you can.

No the base game installed from GOG looked like it. The menu was completely gray and the player icons very small. Maybe it's just high resolution problem?

Huh... that's weird.
Minmaxing in this game makes it super boring though.
Optimal is getting 82-85 on the roll and distributing it out how you want it.
Maxing your character with 100+ rolls should only be done in solo play.

kensai is a fighter subclass that doesnt use armor
if you dual-class kensai into mage at the right level its considered the most overpowered class in the game but you need to know how to exploit the mechanics properly
generally your fighters stay in the front and fight while your mages stay in the back and cast, it's a party-based game so you dont have one person who does everything

Be sure one of your companions in the sequel can use a mace for those goddamn clay golems.

If I have minsc I usually have him rock dualwielding flails and hammers OR maces.

I know but being the main character and all I want my MC to be a powerful all fuck god by the end of the game that can kill anything

I like games where you are severely gimped at the start but by the end all the hard work paid off and now you can fuck everyone

most classes you can dump half the attributes so rolls in the 80s are perfectly fine to max out the ones that matter

>if you dual-class kensai into mage at the right level its considered the most overpowered class in the game
I would argue wish/timestop/improved alacrity/project image spamming is far more overpowered than kensai/mage
hell barb/mage is better than kensai base too really

Can I play this game without combat at all? Is there a way to get through the game without fighting? Like using my charm or tongue to avoid combat.

>Can I play this game without combat at all?
It would be a spoiler to answer why that wouldn't make any sense, but no no you can't.

Most of those are good mods. Make sure when you are installing TOBEX that you turn on whatever option lets the characters move while the inventory is open. You'll save tons of time and boredom organizing your inventory while your guys walk to whatever building you need to go to, and I don't think that is a default option.
I also see Stratagems on there - That is a huge motherfucking kick in the pants difficulty boost. I honestly would pass on that one for a first playthrough unless you think you've got massive gonads. If you go for it, never leave home without a wizard, make sure to read the spell removal spells descriptions really carefully, and cheese the fuck out of the sleep spell early game BG1. You won't get through the kobalds in Nashkel without lots of sleep spells.

As for fun shit I'd recommend, if you are playing as a mage you'll have more fun if having your main guy 'die' doesn't give an instant game over, with dh.blackwyrmlair.net/bwl_mods_download.php?mod=52 this mod. It's going to make the game easier by default but you won't have to sit in the back row with a bow until you have respectable hit points.
>powerful all fuck god
heh

no, 80% of the game is unavoidable combat

ok :)

That's not true, you can avoid most of the combat but you can't avoid bosses.

1 full fighter and 1 full mage are better than 2 fighter / mages
but you can go a fighter / mage and solo the entire game if you want

well sure you could run away from it all but if you avoided most of the combat there wouldn't be much of a game left to play

What's your pick for personality.

I'm thinking one of the evils. Should I pick chaotic evil for my evil wannabe sorcerer?

You could also just use Shadowkeeper and give your mage mastery in bastard sword and rely on stoneskin and whatever to keep you from melting when something hits you
Stratagems is enough of a difficulty boost that I don't think giving the MC an illegal class is purely cheating, especially when almost all the BG2 NPC's are illegal in some way

the alignment you choose doesnt matter at all outside of one or two items and dialogue choices

I like dialogue choices though. It's a roleplaying game is it not? I feel like I could play the game 20 times and have a new experiences with all the options it gives you.

You also have NPC's drop out of the party if you get fully good/bad reputation

are you thinking of fallout? bg is a great game, it has great writing, but it's a game about combat with some background dialogue to drive the killing along. You don't get to make significant choices

reputation is seperate from your alignment, the NPCs alignment matters in that case

There is also infighting between NPCs with different alignments, potentially resulting in combat with your own group.

Haha fuck if I care. I only want evil sonsa bitches on my squad anyway. I hope I can kill my party members for such insubordination. Such is the malice of my edgy tyrant.

good luck filling out a full party of evil characters if you kill even a single one off

The only damper on your edge will be the lack of Evil NPC's in BG2. You have to rock at least one neutral guy because there just isn't enough evil manpower. Or install and evil NPC mod.

I've never played it so I wouldn't know

The evil NPCs are all stronger than the good ones
although you dont get keldorn

Hmm...... I will have to tailor them to my will then.

What do you think about Icewind Dale? It has Chris Avellone so it has to be good.

When I started BG1, I didn't fucking know you were stuck at low level D&D the whole game. Then came BG 2.

Bravo Bioware.

>Icewind Dale
Only if you can't get enough of dat dank Infinity Engine combat; it lacks in every other department compared to BG1/2.

What about Planetscape: Torment? Also Chris Avellone.

Also thanks user you guys are helpful

Great story, terrible combat.

>Chris Avellone
this guy is nearly as overrated as hideo kojima

Why is the combat terrible. Also I heard it's the best story ever told in a video game before.

Icewind Dale has you build up to 6 characters to fill the party slot. No recruitable NPCs in this case. Also don't bother looking for a story. It's the run off the mill stop the evil destroy everything. If you are looking for dungeon explorer, infinity engine combat simulator it's recommended.

Icewind Dale 2 is much better than Icewind, BG1 and BG2 anyway.

Bad encounter design, limited class choices, lack of combat log, and shitty radial menu.

guys? where can I find a torrent for the original version of baldurs gate and bladurs gate 2, it's all enhanced version

Go to bed Sawyer.

It's a point-and-click adventure game that's dressed up as an RPG because p&c adventure games were dead at the time.

It's a fucking great adventure game, though.

Oh. When I said Icewind Dale, I meant the sequel as well of course!

I consider them all one game. Like I consider BG 1 and 2 one game.

freegogpcgames.com/160/baldurs-gate-2-complete/

Not anywhere close. Avellone is at least semi-competent, which in the realm of videogames makes him the absolute best. He's not even a great writer, videogame stories are just that shit.

Thanks mein nigger, also why did OP say trilogy, is there a game I'm not aware of?

>Torment
This one is the other way around. Very barebones RPG system and lackluster combat, but the story is universally acknowledged to be one of the best in CRPGs. Keep in mind though that it's not a Sword Coast high fantasy, it's pretty different.

You can also try Arcanum for kind of a middle ground between those two.

There's a mod that combines BG 1 and 2 + expansions as one entire game

Avellone is by far the best writer in all of video game history. His work is pretty great, especially with the retarded deadlines hes given. Imagine if he was given 8 years or even 10 for a book or something.

In what? Baldur's Gate 1? That's the UI in BG1. BG2 changed it.

Trilogy is a mod that puts BG1 on the BG2 engine. I guess the mod makers count BG2: Throne of Bhall as a third game.

Beamdog is making an actual third Baldur's Gate, aren't they? I wonder if they'll make the trans-cleric playable this time.

>Beamdog is making an actual third Baldur's Gate, aren't they?
Please tell me you're joking.

They need to get Avellone on the project he's freelance since he left Black Isle I mean Obsidian

Avellone doesn't actually do shit on these games, though. They just buy his name to give themselves some RPG nerd credibility.

Icewind Dale, BG1 and 2 are comparable on the level because they share the mechanics because of AD&D 2e (the ruleset which the three games adhere to).

Icewind Dale 2 is a little different because it's using the 3E ruleset. There are descriptions on the set in game via character record so no trouble transitioning. Plus Icewind 2 has a "new game plus" for high level characters, but you can play it low level but not recommended. Equipment also has a stronger version of the normal difficulty.

They should hire Hepler.

No, I'm not joking. A lot of the not-shit writing in DA:O came from her, and after she bailed, the writing in the series got a lot fucking worse.

anything he touches is gold though. He actually cares about his games

GO FOR THE EYES BOO, GO FOR THE EYES!!!!

Guess it depends on the character you play and if you run a bunch of difficulty mods ect.

Last time I did a playthrough I had a pretty beefy Blade, but I ended up getting a bug in ToB that made the fight with Sarevok and co completely impossible since they were all at their enhanced modded strength.
Tried for ages to get past that fight but ended up calling it quits and never got a chance to finish that playthrough which is a shame.

Would be fun to do a new one, but I get so OCD having to do every single quest that its a absolutely insane marathon to get through.

What thread did Minsc step into?
