None of them. There are good, even fantastic JRPGs, but the time investment required to play them is too large and the mechanics are too abstract/niche that I would consider any of them essential for everybody.

>Super Mario RPG
>complex

Only JRPG you need friends

Supreme taste

Skies of Arcadia

Seiken Densetsu 3

Lufia 2 tends to be quite underrated in the SNES era. Main story is great on its own, and the ancient cave in the post game is arguably more enjoyable gameplay wise.

Persona 4

...

Romancing SaGa: Minstrel Song
or
SaGa Frontier

Secret of Mana comes to mind.

Chrono Trigger

none are worth playing for the gameplay which is the only thing that matters

Every Dragon Quest.

name 7 non-sonic games with the overworld movement of super mario rpg

came here to post these

grandia can come too

There was a time when must play JRPGs existed. What happened? Action/adventure games took the themes and cinematic experience, and improved on the formula. Decades later, JRPGs still feel predictable and stale.

I don't know about "must play" but here's some good ones.

DQ series
Mother series
Most mario rpgs
4th gen Squaresoft stuff

Basically all I find good. 5th gen and it went to shit with the playstation in my opinion.

Why the fuck would you ruin that list with a FE game?

Panzer Dragoon Saga

Kamidori.

Fuck off gaylord. FE before Awakenings is an amazing series.

Out of all the SMT games, you chose DeSu?

Final fantasy counts right? Ignore the newer ones. Also, must come here to say Chrono trigger aged horribly and is not worth playing. People who say otherwise have nostalgia on their brain. Same thing with golden sun. Golden sun looks like cancer, and this is coming from someone who's usually not a graphics fag. It's UI sucks as well.

Star Ocean 1 or 2, series had such potential.

...

Chrono Trigger has aged like fine fucking fine. I played it for the first time last year and it holds up fantastically.

a very good JRPG
but the most epic is shining force 3
it had 3 epic parts that had a conclusion
all in 3d too.
saturn is very very under appreciated

...

>the time investment required to play them is too large
Meanwhile MOBA addicts spend thousands of hours on their games and nobody complains about that.

>tfw still can't find a physical copy of this anywhere

And to add to the thread itself, Valkyria Chronicles 1 is both cheap and easy to get nowadays and rather accessible.

not an RPG

Chrono Trigger is the Cowboy Bebop of JRPG vidya.

I wouldn't say must play, but I think Parasite Eve would be great for these kinds of lists because it's incredibley short for an RPG, at like 10-12 hours if don't do post game stuff. So I think it's fair accessible.

This goes for Undertale too, but you should be more familiar with RPGs before playing it so I wouldn't put it on an introductory list like that.

>SRPG
Disgaea: Afternoon of Darkness
Stella Deus: The Gate of Eternity
Ragnarok Tactics
Wild Arms XF
Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions
Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together

Literally nobody asked for this.

And then 3 happened

Oh shit, I still have a copy of that game laying around. I bought it for 10 bucks a long time ago

The DS version looks pretty good, tho.

Uhh
what is SaGa?
I didnt recommend them for no fucking reason

...

ARPGs are RPGs too.

the newer Final Fantasy are the best ones.
XIII LR is great, so is XII.

the number of hours people put in ASSFAGGOTS is the least of the problems it has.

Low quality bait.
0/10 Keep trying,m8.

>XIII LR
I'd heard that it was actually quite similar to a SaGa game and have been interested in it since. Would you say that?

13 was literally "cutscenes with some fighting: the game" though.

no, they are not

my nigga
>all those non-combat skills
>yfw you can cook food and craft things
>yfw the planet blows up

And corridors.

The Last Remnant is better than the farce SaGa has become.

it doesn't mean shit unless if you've played Ultima, Wizardry, or Rogue but the lowest bar for non newfag status would have to be DQ1

Chrono Trigger didn't age horribly, what are you talking about? The soundtrack is amazing for a 1995 game, the movement and menu navigation is fluid and easy, and the game brought great things to the table that were relatively new at the time, like New Game Plus. The sprite work wasn't especially amazing, but it still looks fairly good for its time. It still holds up today without issue.

A great classic? I agree.

Don't forget Lightning wankery.

Seiken Densetsu 3
Lufia 2
Chrono Trigger
Super Mario Rpg
Tales of Phantasia
Secret of Evermore
Earthbound
Etrian Odyssey

Top of my head ones

Yes it is.

When did I talk about XIII?

>The Last Remnant is better than the farce SaGa has become.
Its been awhile since I've seen an opinion this terrible
9/10 my dude

bretty good

It's a classic in the sense that someone will inevitably mention it in JRPG threads, can we talk about some other stuff?

Checked

>Chrono trigger aged horribly
and here is why I hate this shit term
let me rephrase this into actual human language
>I played Chrono Trigger and didn't like it but want to fit in so I'm going to sound like a lukewarm toolbag instead.
Just say you don't like the game, not this lukewarm shit. Games don't age, they are the same as they are on release date. People age.

Lightning returns is shit too.
Prove me wrong
Protip: I am fucking right, Square stopped making great games since FFIX

Grandia 1 and 2
Breath of Fire 3 (and 4)
All of the SaGa games

awww yis, though I was the only one on the god damn planet who played this
>real time combat with option of playing a more FF style
>Rena best grill
>top-tier spells

Undertale

Every megaten game

Nice b8, m8.
(Though DESU, 12 isn't nearly as bad as some people say. It's just painfully mediocre all due to the executive meddling forcing Vaan into the game.)

The topic of the thread is "JRPGs you must play". Of course great games will be mentioned every time. Also, how is mentioning it stopping you from talking about others?

FFX. Of any vidya related belief I hold, this is thelectronic sttongest. FFX is a fantastic game that everyone should play.

Because the premise of these kinds of list is introductory, I'm gonna with with Kouldelka because it's short, would appeal to horror fans, and could get people to dive into the related Shadow Hearts series.

Breath 1 - 4
Wild Arms
Grandia 1 & 2
Gothic 1 &2
Final Fantasy 1 - 12

none. jrpgs are not mandatory

>this is thelectronic sttongest.

Wait, the Gothic games are JRPGs?

I don't disagree that "aged horribly" is a really lazy and shitty criticism but "the game has aged" is just shorthand for "the technology and medium have progressed such that X game feels antiquated" (much like how a cell phone from the early 2000s might look and feel "old" compared to modern phones). The key is that just because something is old, it doesn't necessarily mean that it is also bad.

I played Breath of Fire 3 recently
Its kinda meh
Fuck training boyd, it killed my desire to finish the game

My fucking negro. The ancient cave is still the best roguelite dungeon crawler to exist after the wave of indies we've had. Shame about the remake, though.

>just say you don't like the game
Not him, but it is possible to have liked a game at one point, go back to it, and think that it is clunky or poorly done. I loved FF7 when I was a kid, went back to it after the remake was announced and found it very hard to stay interested. For the record I also replayed FF6 and FF5 recently as well and enjoyed them immensely. But he's fucking wrong about Chrono Trigger. That game is still a masterpiece.

>FF 1-12
>1-12
Only a handful of FF's would be considered a must play JRPG.

I liked Cross way better than Trigger

1, 4, and 6.

given that the defining property of a SaGa game is controlling a large group of units and in XIII LR you only control one character, I wouldn't say so.
The combat system is very good though, you switch in real time between garbs that you previously set up, each with special abilities and roles, queue commands to execute (different commands fill the queue at a different rate), and certain attacks build stagger which degrades over time but weakens an enemy once a threshold is reached.
The game itself is limited in time, which you can extend by collecting rewards from side quests. Doing enough quests extends the time to 14 days, unlocking a secret dungeon and the true end of the game.

action-RPG is a different genre.
You might as well say Zelda is an RPG.

Phone posting...

given that FFIX is crap that doesn't hold a candle to VIII and X, your argument is worthless

I just finished all available Trails games in the past 2 months and I'm looking for games that have at least some good stories.

Checking the PSN PS4 store, I don't see anything new available, are there anything good in PS3 or PC that most people might have missed?

There's a remake?

Though I don't think there's much that seperates Lufia from other JRPGs, I think how tools and puzzles are implemented in the dugeons is very good and makes them a lot more enjoyable than the typical JRPG. And I think very few others have done it like that other than the Wild Arms and Golden Sun series.

But if we're on this note... pic related.

Virginia Maxwell is my favorite JRPG protag and I feel bad that this game couldn't be made today without this entire board dismissing it because it has a female protag.

>IX worse than VIII
I've seen some shit taste user but this takes the cake

I would actually say the defining characteristic of SaGa game is an open-ended game with non-linear progression

>VIII
>good

>no Legend of Dragoon
Does Cred Forums hate it now?

arcadia just seemed waaay too slow for me to get into. I haven't played it myself, but watching a fight play out seemed significantly like xenosaga, which a fucking chore to play.

VIII is some grand sci-fi fantasy tale like VII, IX is mediocre bland generic fantasy story with cartoon characters that is so bad it might as well be a Dragon Quest

I was thinking more along the lines of 6 and 7 but i can see why you think 1.
Final Fantasy didn't really get big until they hit 3d, but obviously they wouldn't have made it this far without their 2d games.

>comparing VIII to anything
VIII was shit aside from that absolute god tier ost.
But at least it isn't II or XIII.

I personally never was a fan, but I assume all the people who grew up with it just moved to /vr/ because I've seen a couple Legend of Dragoon threads on there.

No, it's just that not too many people have played it. Good game, though. It just had so many good little things in it, like Guard acting as a small heal, and then there was the whole "Combo" system.

I'm playing tactics ogre knights of Lord is so I'm interested on this list. Kill your self my nigger.

Name a better JRPG to come out in the past decade.

There was a DS "spiritual successor" called Estopolis which basically took L2's story and turned it into a 3D action-puzzle-platformer abomination with the cringey character designs from . Needless to say it was a flop and killed the Lufia franchise entirely.

>there will never be another JRPG with puzzles as challenging as lufia 2

HARPOOOOON!

Yeah play that game

>Disgaea: Afternoon of Darkness
Shit srpg series.
>Stella Deus: The Gate of Eternity
Moderately interesting but overall pretty mediocre.
>Ragnarok Tactics
Horse shit.
>Wild Arms XF
Huge potential, ended up pretty mediocre.

You managed to post the two great ones literally everyone knows and then stuff from shit to mediocre.

New to srpgs?

Chrono Trigger's spiritual successor

Its a good game but not a great one
It's really good for the first two discs but slowly gets worse as you near the 4th disc
then i never finished i but I heard the ending is lame

Xenoblade Chronices

Mah nigga

Definitely this, shit was an experience

Give me a list of the best srpg's like let us cling together. I'm new to the gender.

VIII is great.
For some reason, it has become popular on the Internet to dislike it, I'm not sure why. I guess it marked FF as going away from the super deformed genre and moving to more serious mature settings with more sophisticated storylines, which some casuals didn't like.

Whatever, shit-taste bitch. Look at the fucking OP. Nice English, by the way.

None. If I wanted to jack off to a softcore porn video, I'd just go to pornhub

>tfw I'm the only person on Cred Forums who loves Unlimited SaGa

No, it's because it was the second FF2 in the series. The only reason people like it is because they played it during their childhood. It had some good music.

I haven't gotten too far into it, but I don't hate it.

It's a meme to hate it
Blame spoony
But there are some legit reasons to hate it. The numerous forced tutorials are lame, enemy scaling leaves something to be desired, its kind of a pain to have to Draw Magic and Draw points aren't common enough to be a substitute
Weapon upgrading is also weirdly vague so it rarely feels like you're actually making progress

VIII is hot garbage.

same desu
I'm liking what I'm seeing so far, I really enjoy the exploration with the usage of skills. it really feels like a tabletop rpg

Playing it nowadays I think gives it a different flavor. In some ways it isn't whole unique anymore, since I think the real draw of the different stories are each all unique in their stories and mechanics from stuff lie stealth to building defenses or a sci fi horror movie...
But I guess what I mean now is that it feels like a big collection of (GOOD) quirky RPG maker games because each chapter is a each short experimental little game in their own right. BUT I think that they all connect together later helps it still feel very special.

I have the game just never opened it up yet. Am I in for a ride?

Is there a way to speed up loading screens in grandia?Every time you change screens, go to options or into battle screen it takes around 5 seconds or more I think. It's really annoying.

>Mediocre: The JRPG

It's the 3D version of games like Secret of the Stars and Beyond the Beyond. What a fucking bland, generic snoozefest.

Manage your expectations, its not at all like almost every other JRPG
It's like a tabletop RPG game. Don't be hesitant to look up some Game System Guides on it because I feel it really could use some documentation because the manual doesn't really help that much. If you can learn the game though, its very rewarding, like all SaGa games

>ranking VIII, II and XIII as the worst three FF games

I like you user, because you say correct things.

Oh absolutely, that last scenario really put everything into perspective and made the villain much more sympathetic, it's a shame more people haven't played it because it really was a unique game

Iuno friends, FF8 has a pretty shit story and some annoying characters but I find abusing the junction system more interesting than yet another standard ATB FF. Neither have particularly interesting plots really. And yeah X is amazing in terms of music and battle system, it is just the characters and linearity that suck (even if the linearity fits with the plot)

It's a game love the presentation of and how different it tried to be, and I really want get into, but I had the hardest time trying to understand the mechanics so I never really was able to get into it.

Well that and the used copy I got of it was scratched up real bad and randomly crashed.

VIII is a pathetic excuse for a love story, has ultrasuperficial characters, one of the worst twists in story-telling history (that had already been done in the previous game and was bad even then), the worst magic mechanics in the series, and summons that take so long that using them makes you wonder why you don't do something else with your life. It does have triple triad though which is excellent. IX tried a little too hard to be cute and was generally formulaic, but it's still lightyears better than VIII.

Each FF had different leveling systems, like jobs, materia, etc. The Junction system just let you do really broken stuff with it if you wanted to put the time into grinding draw magic.

I'm checking some games to play. Can anyone tell me which ones are good? Gameplay and story-wise.

Resonance of Fate?
Last Remnant?
Star Ocean V?
I am Setsuna?
Ni no Kuni?

Thanks baby it nice chatting with pussy bitch like u :^)

Shining Force 1-3/CD/Gaiden
Bahamut Lagoon
Vantage Master
Wachenröder
Vandal Hearts 1
Devil Survivor 1-2
Arc the Lad 1-2
Langrisser series (don't touch the 3DS one)
Growlanser series
Front Mission series (don't touch Evolved)
Dark Wizard
Brigandine

Baby bitch :^)

Only one I know gets kind of bad later is Ni no Kuni, but I'd say try it out if you already have it.

Thanks, man.

The story is dumb but that isn't saying much for FF. Beyond that, if you're a fan of any FF at all, you really don't have much ground to look down on FF 8. Didn't have any trouble with it after deciphering the combat system that must have been really deep and complex for the eight year olds playing the game. Otherwise, it felt like any other FF.

>has become

VIII has been as divisive as it is now since it was released.

If anything, more people online defend it now than they did in the early 2000s.

You're just using a defense mechanism.

I feel like a special snowflake because it feels like nobody has heard of Ar Tonelico ever.

I have been considering buying Trails in the Sky, is it good? No one mentioned it in this thread.

parrot liek melon

Could've been so amazing but it feels held back in sime regards. Great game.

I like hiw the boy is suppose tonbe the canon hero of the china chapter but so many people pick Li that she basically is accepted as the canon choice.

Resonance of Fate is worth playing just for the gun customization system alone. The story is pretty hard to follow, but the characters are all fairly likable, especially the main trio. The game is actually quite difficult if you don't know what you're doing. I had to refer to a guide for the final boss because I couldn't beat him within 20 attempts. Solid nonetheless.

Ni No Kuni is good, too, although it doesn't do anything special.

Dunno about the rest.

You can emulate the PSP version on a toaster (or a phone).

The story was especially dumb for a Final Fantasy game, though, and the characters were retarded. It's not like every FF game is of the same quality, either. You've got games ranging from really good like FFXI or FFV to really bad or broken games like FFXIII and FFII (and VIII).

Never heard of Vantage Master before. Looks fun

It's good. Play the PC version so you can transfer saves to the sequels.

...

It's a nice, long, satisfying adventure, with lots of things to see.

Battles can get a little repetitive.

Radiant Historia is a must play, without a doubt.

On another note..
Just got done with pic related though.
It's pretty good but I had some issues with it. The music is mediocre (and there's not enough track variety, especially in a game this big, I got sick of hearing the same music over and over again) and the sheer length of the game made it hard to stick with at some points.

On the positive side, the characters are all interesting and the story is pretty good. Battle system is cool too.

Wouldn't recommend it though if you're not willing to read a lot. Even by jrpg standards, there's a lot of fucking reading.

God, when did I start bitching about games being too long? It really did drag at times though.
Still an overall enjoyable game though non the less.

Does there exist any combat system relatively similar to the one in mother 3? Call me weird but I honestly lobed it.

you are mentally retarded

JRPG's with top tier OST's?
youtube.com/watch?v=KYSvX6uLC0Q

Ar Tonelico 2 is the second best JRPG on the PS2.

>I guess it marked FF as going away from the super deformed genre
>graphics are a genre

>VIII
>story more mature and sophisticated than VI and VII

This all has to be bait because holy shit if someone is actually that stupid.

...

>Not the Samurai Champloo of JRPG Vidya

Who the hell plays the FF for quality story and characters though? I don't expect FF fans to be the judge of what's a good story or not so it's hard to take someone seriously when they say "FF ( ) has a stupid story" while saying they loved FF ( )

PC port never ever
it really needs it

>I liked Cross way better than Trigger

Why?
I've beaten Trigger a couple of times.
I'm playing Cross right now for the first time and I don't hate it, but I'm not really enjoying it either.

I've seen people say they prefer Cross to Trigger before, but I'm not seeing it.

I've heard that game is complete garbage. Is that just typical unfounded SaGa hate or is it really bad?

The entirety of Chrono Trigger's soundtrack is nothing short of a masterpiece. So many memorable tracks. The soundtrack is probably the game's best trait, in fact.

>implying any JRPGs have a good story

FF is no better or worse than any other JRPG. Including Chrono Trigger.

Why are you defending FFVIII? Is it because it's your favorite game or something? You need to calm down and rethink your life.

these tumblr-as-fuck redraws

>SaGa Frontier
You are a good man.

>just typical unfounded SaGa hate
Yeah, but moreso since it's way different than the previous games in terms of poorly explained mechanics like the skill level grid system thing.

I'm with you user. The combat in CC was novel but not actually very good. The color system wasn't well-executed. And most of the huge cast of party members weren't useful, significant, or interesting. Just watered things down compared to having a core cast, in my opinion.

Looked beautiful and had great music but lacked actual substance for me.

every kaga emblem game is fantastic and politically complex

Last Remnant has a lot of annoying hidden systems and can get confusing, but it honestly has one of the most fun combat systems I've seen in a turn based RPG. Shit has depth and requires you to play a bit smarter and use space properly so you don't get constantly flanked. Also the dynamic music and moral system are pretty damn dope, having the music shift as you push a fight into your favor is like the coolest shit.

Not sure about the others, but if you can get Last Remnant on PC I'd recommend it.

Its not bad at all. Its just has a really high barrier to entry. Its not even really a hard game it's just really unusual. SaGa is cursed with that kind of attention I'm afraid and this game is even unusual compared to other SaGa games

I once heard the meme that The Last Remnant is the Dwarf Fortress of jrpgs but thats bullshit t b h. This game is actually like the dwarf fortress of jrpgs. Really in depth game that is very rewarding if you take the time to learn it.

not him but VIII is the best final fantasy. Best music, above average story line, best card game, etc. Then game also lets you play exactly how you want. if you want to be strategic you can junction status effect spells, if you want to be gay and overpowered it doesnt take that much work to get there, but its all up to you. same is true for the opposite,

>VIII is the best final fantasy

>VIII
>best FF

Why would you do that, user? Just go online and tell lies.

>question why FF fans are shitting on the story of another FF
>GEE user CALM DOWN WHY ARE YOU DEFENDING IT SO HARDCORE

Is that really a question you had or are you just looking for (yous)? I do not see where I put down all my chips on FF VIII. I already said it has a shitty story and didn't even claim the game was good at any point. I just don't see why a series of mediocre stories should be taken seriously for mocking one of their entries that also has a mediocre story.

I don't see why fans of a series of mediocre stories should be taken seriously when mocking one of their entries that also has a mediocre story*

Sorry, I had to give you a stupid response because you gave me one.

I played Cross years before I ever played Trigger and I still like it more. I liked trigger a lot and I've finished it a few times, but to me Cross felt more like a self-contained graphic novel series where Trigger felt more like a saturday morning caroon.

That said, the PSP undub version of Star Ocean 2 could be the best JRPG I've played in the past five years. It's better than FFVII or whatever classic. There's no need to play the others, or the PSX original, just SO2 PSP.

>Resonance of Fate is worth playing just for the gun customization system alone.

that shit never fails to crack me up
i remember /k/ having troll threads about this
i.imgur.com/7ldjpTu.png

Should I play the ps1 or the psp versions of FFT and Tactics Ogre?

For tactics ogre, easily the psp version. Find a physical copy if you can, that shit is excellent.

All I did was restate my initial post. Maybe you shouldn't have replied at all if you didn't have an answer.

Not one of you niggers even mentioning this is enough to make my tiny dick completely limp.

I was planning on emulation

Why are you still responding to me? I didn't ask you anything.

The animation-patched version of FFT WotL is the definitive version of the game. If you can get that, play it.

Why did you respond to me when you didn't answer anything?

PSP Tactics Ogre
PSP FFT with the slowdown removal patch

Has anyone here played Sakura Wars? I was always curious about this semi unknow game

For others that haven't played them, Trails is my favorite JRPG world ever, and Ive played most JRPGs. Suidoken 2 and Xenogears are also top notch.

Why did you respond to me?

Yes, that's what I asked.

Definitely play it. No world is built stronger. You have to be patient and appreciate dialogue though.

I always see people recommend SH2, but none of the others. Are the others actually good to play?

Yakuza Zero is coming in January.

It's a hybrid JRPG/Brawler.

Stop responding to me or you'll force my hand.

I'm sorry I just really want to plug this game again, if you say you're a JRPG fan but you haven't played SO2 it's like saying you like to drink but you've never gotten drunk.

>ctrl-f "Valkyrie Profile" 0 results

Come on guys, at least 1 and 2, Covenant of The Plume is up to you.

SH and SH2 have good plots and are fun to play. SH3 isn't nearly as good as 1-2 but is still a good game that gets unduly shit on.

Koudelka has a fantastic plot, but actually playing it is a chore.

Yes it's just sh2 is the best in series. And koudelka stands aside.
Also this game and the second one on ps2. And okage shadow king it is nothing special but the style is great.

I keep hearing that the SaGa games are fairly complex and not forgiving to new players. Makes me real hesitant to check them out.

I really dug BoF3. I liked 4 a lot better though, but I'm in the minority on that one. The combat system in BoF4 had some minor things that made it really goddamn awesome to me, plus I dug the story and setting. The only issue with 4 is that the game takes way too long to roll out some mechanics and

I generally feel the opposite. PS1 era JRPGs tend to have a decent amount more diversity to them.

Also

>Want to play through SaGa games, Fire Emblem, Chrono Cross, Suikoden, Wild Arms 3, Digital Devil Saga, and a handful of other JRPGs

Shit's annoying, it's hard for me to want to sink time into a JRPG without knowing about it. I'm always afraid I'm gonna spend like 70 hours completing a mediocre game.

Radiata Stories

Do it faggot, I'm not afraid of you.

Depending on which sub-series of the SaGa series (OG, Romancing, Frontier, etc.) you can step in easily or have a lot of difficulties. It also depends on the entry, too. I'd recommend Frontier 1 since it's pretty fun and also pretty easy to get into compared to the other games. Start as either Blue or Red.

For your supplementary fascination, Lenneth Valkyrie is a recruitable part member in this in the end game dungeon

I solved this pretty easily as a kid. Its fucking dragon mountain that gives me nightmares. That fucking growing plants puzzle.

Jesus Christ that's all boring shit. There were good games but the ones you listed are not of them.

>growing plants "puzzle"
It's actually just the world's most annoying memorization game.

>tfw figuring out the door to get to pic related as a kid was harder than doing the puzzle itself

this weapon looked so janky to use. I understand the mechanics are the same as a police baton, but its too damn long

never solved this. never will, i think

The endings were too sad for such a game.

I didn't want to have to use this again, but I have no choice. Witness my hidden technique...

the chests are worth it user

my favorite RPG on the SNES. The game's just fucking solid all around.

So is Shadow Hearts 2 a somewhat spooky/horror themed game? I might have to play it for October.

I've been meaning to play through this too. It's pretty much been a struggle between playing this first or running through Suikoden first. The art style and combat system of Valkyrie Profile interest me more overall though.

I wish the PS4 port wasnt full of game crashing bugs because I fucking love this game to bit and really wanna replay it with a sharper res.

This webm will never get old.

Sakura taisen is an extremely well known franchise

Looks neat, but what makes it a jrpg?

Yeah, it got pretty heavy in the end. If it wasn't for all the tits and ass being in the Human campaign, I would've gone non human every time just to save Ganz

If you have a decent PC it emulatores alright. There's a newer version of PCSX2 out that's supposed to be better and even the older versions have a graphics option specifically for Wild Arms 3.

what this guy said
It takes a certain kind of person to really enjoy SaGa, its a series for JRPG veterans, those who play the genre for the actual gameplay and not for the story.

SH is kind of a bizarre, grotesque alternate history setting, yes.

Not really horror, just grim.

Not in the west

Will def keep an eye out for this.

One of, if not my absolute favorite games.

Yeah I've got an unopened copy on my shelf, and a huge backlog.

Is that motherfucking Takeshi Kitano on the bottom right pic?

Psx gen was the pinnacle there was a lot of experimentation. You had gears, brave fencer, tobal, parisite, panzer, rhapsody, lunar, suikoden, anything else from square, bof for psx wasnt broken by translation, tons of taticals, way to many to list

Wait, that has to be Beat Takeshi. I will buy this game if they even include Gaki no Tsukai

Excellent taste.
Its worth dusting off the old PS2 and bumping it up your backlog a few slots. Its that entertaining. I can't think of another game which I can give such a high recommendation for.

It's Beat, he's a big character in Yakuza 6.

You can live chat with Anri too.

buildbot.orphis.net/pcsx2/index.php

I'll agree hard to that, the PS1 had a fuck ton of diversity and games in general were a lot more experimental and fun.

Brave Fencer Musashi is hardly a JRPG though. I fucking love the game dearly and it's in my top 10 games, but I wouldn't call it an RPG.

The moment I learned that you could kick NPCs to get them to duel you, the world was never safe again.

Have any of you played Yuri Kago no Sora? I saw a webm or gif of the game in an old webm thread and it looked neat. Looks a little like Maplestory though. The game's also only in Japanese. So far I haven't had had much trouble, it's just difficult to understand the story.

>buy it for ps4
>see that all the character models have these ugly black lines all over their faces
>play it emulated on pc and it isn't there
Can someone explain why this happened

I'm assuming the Former because I honestly didn't even know Minstrel Song existed until like 2 years ago.

SaGa never really died in japan. Square USA just chimped out and didn't bother translating the remakes on DS.

I guess tailoring your own characters and problem solving is too hard for CoD babbies than just mindlessly shooting waves after waves of braindead NPCs.

Sadly I grew up enough to be able to legally post here

How difficult is this game? Not just grind wise but in terms of depth. I can't play piss-easy jrpgs anymore, I need a challenge, always been intrigued by this series though.

Honorable mention for best battle system
Bravely Default

I played a bit. You spend more time getting into awkward situations with a bunch of Tsundere bitches than you ever do in a Mech. Also the game saves at certain points sporadically (Up to 15 minutes between saves, I lost two battles worth of progress because the emulator decided to freeze) which is a real turn off.

Oh and best girl is Subaru BTW.

Good taste except for meme fantasy 7, IV and VI are better

>Forever ago, reading gaming mags

Glad I finally got to play the thing, everything about the game is pretty great. The setting, the combat system, the whole demon fusion, recruitment, and leveling system.

Phantasy Star, not the online ones, the JRPGs on the Sega Genesis.

I'M PLAYING THROUGH BRAVELY DEFAULT AND THIS IS AMAZING.

Anybody with a 3DS that hasn't played this yet, should definitely pick it up.

The second Shadow Hearts. Such a unique game and a shame most people never heard of it.

I just activated the water crystal, and I've honestly not been swept away with an RPG like this since my first time playing FF7.

People keep saying some shit goes down later in the game, and I'm fucking scared it's gonna break my heart

VC has good gameplay but it's story is completely dull and episodic while not exploiting its gameplay to its maximum potential. It's bran-dead easy.

This must be the only true recomendation.

>has fun exploits
>automatically good

>beat ff7 for the first time this year

Ryu ga Gotoku Ishin is easily my favorite modern JRPG.

>Radiata

It's a CRIME that most likely than not we'll never get a sequel/remake/spiritual sequel.

Learning how to fucking recruit people, learning their daily schedule, etc. Awesome game.

I'm not that far yet, but I'm gonna fucking remember that

STOP SAYING THAT

Dont get me wrong, I'm bragging. I loved BD battle system, and the Dark Knight super rush is a fantastic combo.
It takes some specific class setup, but there's probably a step by step guide somewhere. For instance, you'll have to equip the Dark Knights with blood swords, or have them cast absorb blade magic on thier first turn, thus lowering the number of subsequent attacks. Also each member needs a few specific passive perks.

Tom is CUTE!

I don't remember it being terribly difficult, but the battle system requires a certain modicum of dexterity.

Not to say the gameplay is bad (it totally isn't), but you should play them for the story. It's really fantastic.

Holy shit Cred Forums, megaten is literally the most consistent jrpg series

That's ARPG you baka.

This proves Suikoden II is truly a masterpiece.

I need to try that again but whatever filter it uses hated my toaster something fierce.

Also I heard something about you or your friend dying depending on path and it's no fun if you already know these things are going to happen (In such a goofy game too)

Edit. Stupid Cred Forums having to wait to delete shit.

SMT is casual shit

I'm guessing your only other JRPG series is FF.
Dragon Quest is the most consistent by far, and has twice as many mainline entries as SMT.

The Ateliers are cozy little JRPGs. Be a little girl, run free in colorful lands with her friends, make awesome shit, listen to great soundtracks.

Just don't expect to be slaying gods or aliens or saving the world from whatever evil of the week.

Everyone is quick to dismiss Atelier games because it's not "epic adventure" enough.

>Alundra (not really a jrpg but the best 2d zelda)

I disagree, I found Alundra to be extremely underwhelming.

The game is truly a completionists wet dream. Some of those characters had such narrow windows for recruitment (looking at you, fighters guild red jacket guy)
The two campaigns are so wildly different, that you dont have to worry about being spoiled on anything quite yet. I highly recommend doing the non-human side first, and the human side second.

Can someone actually explain this game to me?

What do you actually do in these games?

I tried looking some up in Youtube and I still don't get it.

Eh, I'll not worry about it until I actually get the DK class, see if I can't figure it out.

BTW, everybody keeps saying the ranger class is shit, but mine FAR out-damages all my other characters, so what gives? Do I drop him now before the potential plateau???

It's like a more open world Tales Of series, from what I've seen.

>The game is truly a completionists wet dream. Some of those characters had such narrow windows for recruitment (looking at you, fighters guild red jacket guy)

Missables in games are never a positive. They're archaic as fuck and have thankfully been abolished almost entirely.

I don't want to restart the game just because I missed something forever, and I don't want to finish it because I missed it.

Please don't skip SH1. It's really a great obscure PS2 RPG that was released with an awful timing (around the FFX release date). I know SH2 is probably the better game, at least gameplay wise, but SH1 has a really interesting eerie ambience with a really fitting and amazing soundtrack. And it's a really bad idea jumping straight to SH2 without knowing Yuri's background and watching SH1's bad ending.

Silver Will is still one of the best battle themes of all time and all the town/field themes are god tier. The regular battle theme and semifinal boss themes are, too. It's mostly just the final boss theme that's mediocre, the rest of the music is excellent. Still the sequel does improve the soundtrack, although it reuses some tracks from the first game.

I see some people mentioned TiTS, but Crossbell is the best. Definitely recommended. Shame still no translation on sight.

Excellent use of quads.

How would you rate SH3? I played a bit of it but found it to be kind of boring

Too bad they had to spoil Crossbell for everyone by localizing Cold Steel first since the PS3 and Vita are dying.

You're a girl who runs an alchemist atelier. Why you run an atelier varies between every game. Sometimes it's because she inherits the atelier, sometimes it's because she just wants to.

You collect herbs and ores and stuff and synthesize them into items that you use to fulfill quests. The story usually moves by meeting certain goals in your alchemy learning path. Items you make can have qualities and attributes inherited and tacked onto them for different effects. In a sense, every item you make is unique.

To collect the herbs and ores you have to venture out of town with your friends into places where there are monsters. The FemC defends herself usually by synthesizing bombs to throw at monsters. Oh, you have to make all the healing potions yourself too.

The overarching plot varies. In Rorona, she wants to prevent her atelier from being closed down, so she has to prove her worth. In Totori, she wants to find her mother, so she has to learn alchemy before setting out on an adventure.

In Ayesha, she wants to find her younger sister, and in Sophie, she wants to help Plachta, who is her teacher sealed into a book.

Crossbell also spoils Cold Steel.

XSeed already asked about Falcom on this and they themselves were worried about that part. Falcom said no, it's fine.

there's one, chrono trigger and that's it

Nah, i played CS first but what happened in Crossbell still blown me up. Instead of CS i would blame some faggot who spoil what actually happened in the game. Pic related.

Mario & Luigi - Superstar Saga

Definitely the worst of all 3, even if they did improve the gameplay. SH1 and SH2 are the way to go.
Play SH3 if you want a new game with a different storyline after playing the 2 main games.

>Crossbell also spoils Cold Steel
Not really. It """"spoils"""" some plot points but nothing that wasn't predictable aside from stuff that's actually part of Crossbells plot (IE Garrelia getting wiped out). Unless you consider spoiling the civil war that's been built up since SC to be a spoiler, which would make you dumb.

Regardless Crossbell is the better arc so there's more to ruin by having stuff spoiled.

This handy guide should tell you everything you need to know about the classes.

I think he meant consistently good.

Cold Steel as well just spoils some plot points.

You're just playing favorites because you like the Crossbell arc better.

Stay neutral. Then you'll see it's just the same.

Crossbell arc may be better but that does not warrant false accusations that "this game spoiled that game because that game was better".

I don't wanna look because spoilers, does valkyre stay good? I just got mine to level 10.

This game is awesome!

Yes, yes, yes. Agreed on all counts. Best post in this fucking thread.

Seriously, Shadow Hearts as a series has some faults, but honestly, that story. It's achingly good.

If you haven't played this you should it's really good

After coming into the game straight from Radiant Historia which quite frankly has a 10/10 OST, the music left a lot to be desired. There's a few tracks that I enjoyed a lot throughout the game but quite a few didn't do anything for me.

Valkyrie is an excellent damage dealer, and one of my favorite classes.

Unfortunately the delayed attacks simply aren't quick enough in the long run. It causes some awkward boss fighting at later levels.

sorry about that shit taste man

What about ranger and monk?

...

What does the girl want to do in Iris?

Ranger is unfortunately terrible, but monk is all right. Monk learns some very nice passives that compliment most of the other classes.

Jesus this game was amazing and was and why I still am disappointed with how shit those games have been since PS2 when they went from beatutiful 2d to 3D sprites and became polygon shit.

I like this one
youtube.com/watch?v=aanqnyJy-JU

But why is ranger so terrible? Like, mine is practically carrying my team at this point.

And I've got my monk paired with spell fencer, because I don't know how to mages lol, seems to do the trick.

Good job, Anons.

Is there any reason why tumblr has this incredibly unhealthy obsession with bright red noses? Do they have a clown fetish or something?

Help me out Cred Forums I just replayed ff 7 8 and 9 and before that persona 3 and 4. Anyone have suggestions of what I should play next? I own PC, PS4 and 3

XII is what I like to call the stoner's final fantasy. Needs almost as many inputs as a regular FFXIII battle (ie.: practically none)

Ranger is terrible because its entire sctick is targeting weaknesses, which it has to do actively. You have to use special attacks turn after turn to keep damage up. Essentially its a one trick pony, and that only trick is something other classes can also do.

Spell Fencer for instance, can cast magic on their weapon to also target weaknesses, however after you've enchanted your weapon, you can use any other abilities you have, while still targeting a weakness. So in addition to being just as capable of targeting weakness as a Ranger, the Spell Fencer is also twice as versatile, because attacking the weakness becomes a passive action.

I still like Chrono Cross more then Trigger... also, fuck this dude

emulation.gametechwiki.com/index.php/Main_Page

yep same here I loved FF8, not that FF7 wasnt awesome and it was but FF8 had freaking everything at the time which was to be expected it came after FF7.it had better music, gfx, battle system, and it had that bad ass card game. For a PS1 game the summons where insane. 7,8,9 are my all time FF faves

Is Wild Arms Alter Code: F better than the first game?

Still need to proc that dark weakness for those immunity fights

I play the iPad version of FFTactics which looks even better then my PSP version plus on a bigger screen.

what is refine

Story it's pretty close to the original. Perhaps too close since some of it still feels machine translated. Gameplay is more like the second game which is a nice touch.

Some areas (Like the fair) don't even resemble the original.

Thankfully Salve Maker is so incredibly fucking useful.

jesus Legend of Legaia...I was not ready for a PS1 game to be that good back in the day.

True Rune confirms it.

Honestly, SO2 is literally the only good Star Ocean game and really the reason people even remember the series. Well, as far as positives go.

Oh well then old castlevanias and resident evil 4 are jrpg too!

I remember SO3. But yeah, if you say Star Ocean, it's automatically Star Ocean 2 without question.

My nigga. PE never gets the recognition it deserves.

treasure of the rudras

its below average snes era square but creating new spells from words you found was fucking magic

>what is SaGa?

If you mean Romancing SaGa it's the alternate path JRPGs could have taken at some point, one of sandbox approach with multiple characters and modular stories. With SaGa2 finally getting English Android release and 1 and 3 fan translated you can play the entire trilogy and see for yourself.

Story-wise, is it good?

Live A Live would been seen one of those venerated SNES masterpieces today had it received a proper western release back in the day. Thank fuck for fan translations, though.

I think its some kinda of Euro thing

why would resident evil 4 be a jrpg when it's a survival horror game.

the souls games are japanese role playing games, jrpgs

Most of these games listed are shit t.b.h

I am disgusted by how little appreciation twewy has gotten in this thread. One of the most creative JRPG we've ever gotten, and I'd say one of the best. it's my goat

>Vandal Hearts 1

I'm gonna cut you if you don't recommend VH2 as well. So many people needlessly whine about MUH COMBAT SYSTEM but really it's the only game comparable to FFT and TO on the system as far as atmosphere and general presentation goes.

honestly the sequel was much more, coherent I guess? saga frontier feels more like a prototype game that somehow got greenlit.

>bitches at Fire Emblem
>doesn't bat an eye to Dark Souls

It's not bad. Character interactions are fun.

Like said, don't be expecting an epic adventure and you'll enjoy it.

>below average snes era square
Which still makes it top tier today somehow.

Speaking of sandbox JRPGs - motherfucking Metal Max series. Metal Max Returns for SNES is amazing.

Mah nigga, I had forgotten about that game. Used to be my favorite srpg aside from fft.

Which good old RPGs are not grindy?

Yeah, it's not like games have multiple save slots, even more so for a game where that kind of thing is a given and completionists would know that by now.

Guess I'm going to be that faggot.

youtu.be/6w1v4p-Z4vE

I always liked Suikoden 1 and 2 knew EXACTLY what they wanted to do and worked within their budget for it. Sure, second game gt a bump so they got some cinematics for story reasons, but by and large they mostly focused on nice looking big and expressive sprites and keeping it tight.

So what made PS1 JRPGs so special? There's something about them that's so unlike JRPGs from other generations and I just cannot put my finger on it.

>you missed a good JRPG thread
FUCK

Politics.

Japs couldn't yet achieve their artistic vision, so we received games with good looking characters instead of the garbage you see today.

Means nothing when I have to go back 3+ hours. It's no excuse to have such a shit practice be a thing.
Simply make it so that the missables can be picked up at some other point, perhaps during the post game and everything would be fine.

>just SO2 PSP.

Fuck no. Go and play the original PS1 version.

>FF6
>FF7
>FFX
>chrono trigger
>pokemon (any gen will do)
>dark souls
>kingdom hearts (any that has the core game mechanics of the first, or just 1 and/or 2)

That's probably it. This is for those who may have never played a JRPG. A beginners guide if you will that should absolutely be played if you are into the genre. If you never were into the genre but may want to finally start then this is essentially the perfect starting point. These are all games that are widely regarded as not just amazing in their own genre but as some of the best games ever made. They also have enough of a normie/casual mainstream appeal that may attract those types to a genre they otherwise wouldn't care to play.

Anything I might have missed? Keeping in mind what I said though. Dragon's Quest may be popular in Japan and may be the most popular JRPG's ever but not so in the US. Only Japan really.

Right amount of new technologies and budget freedoms. CD was a massive boon for visuals and audio.

Maybe because, you know, you want to replay the game at some point? People used to do that and not 100% on their first run.

Why are there barely any SF JRPGs? I mean proper SF, not that Star Ocean-like bullshit premise.Robotrek is one of the few I can think of.

Highest point of technology before demographic winter and the economic bubble burst started hitting them hard

I remember playing Resonance of Fate, but I actually don't know what the fuck I was doing.

Should I play it again? I'm pretty sure I was just in the beginning still. Never got back to it because my 360 broke.

It's not bad, just very easy once you figure out the combat system. Character customization it has is the shit, though.

I think a lot of it has to do with it being early 3D. So the technology advanced far enough for the genre to essentially hit it's peak in creativity, financial success, story and artistic vision. However it was also limited enough that what said is true. It sounds strange but considering the state of the industry and what the japanese really wanted JRPG's to be like it seems the best golden age for the genre was inevitably going to be this era.

The genre needed technological limitations while also being advanced enough to get the "epic quality feeling" that you see out of the PS1 JRPG's.

Hope I made sense there.

wew laddy

Story-wise is it ok? I'm not expecting something deep so it's fine if it's just ok. Are the characters good? I don't remember anymore about it really.

I think TiTS music matches the tone of the game exceedingly well. Its less something that gets you pumped for battles and the next twist, but something that you could put on an Mp3 player and go enjoy the world to.
I personally don't think I truly enjoyed the TiTS soundtrack until I listened to it while going on long walks on sunny days.

>Skies of Arcadia

Eh, it has early 2000's clunk so many JRPGs from the time period suffered from, Tales of Symphonia included.

The game feels so slow should I just use cheat engine or something to speed the game up? I've played Trails of Cold Steel 1 and am currently in 2 and plan on playing TiTS but like I said I hate how slow it feels.

Are you saying TiTS is slow compared to ToCS or that they're both just slow in general?

I'm saying TiTS is slow compared to ToCS. Sorry for not being clear

If you can speed up the battles, then I see no reason not to really. I ended up just spamming the large AoE spells to victory anyway, so it's not like you'd be missing much on that front.
The animations for some spells take forever though, which is where some speed up would definitely help.

That's the benefit of growing up with NES RPGs, you underage faggots are spoiled on everything.

>FF6
>JRPG

Actually no, NES and SNES JRPGs were tight as fuck. It was during the PS1 generation that clunk started to creep in because technology was taking its toll, primarily in loading times - both overt and covert.

I'm excited but cautious at the same time. I hope we get news this December.

dark souls isn't really a must play. and correct me if I'm wrong but I also don't think it falls into the category of a traditional jrpg?

If you play one, you understand 80% of the mechanics of all the others.

The battle system is not terribly interesting, and is tied to obtaining more powerful orbs which are story-locked.
The story is quantity over quality; it's not very engaging and the characters behave as that of a teen TV show.

you just showed how much of a casual you are.

I think TitS is one of those JRPGs I would play once and then avoid JRPGs for the rest of the year because it's so extensive.

it's an action rpg and you're right, it doesnt really fit
Still a must-play anyway

Xenogears. Full stop. Its a literal classic.

I could never get into the wild arms games and it bums me out.

I own all of them, but haven't be able to push myself to finish the second TiTs game. And its not even that I don't enjoy it, I just haven't had the urge to play a JRPG in a while and the urges I do have are taken up by "new" ones like DQ7 and SMT4A

dark souls is not an rpg at all.

I wish they did a remake and properly finished the second half

L-lewd

Its not actually lewd. She literally weighs like 500 pounds. He is literally struggling to lift her up.

yes it is you contrarian

I'm emulating FFT on my phone these days.
Apparently it's god tier.
I like it so far.
It's hard as fuck though

it's an rpg made in japan.
dark souls is a jrpg.

I can choose classes in online fps's wow it's rpg now.

Is Blade of Darkness rpg too? Or Enclave?

dark souls looks and plays like none of the games in this thread.

well yes technically speaking :^)
your point?

>I own all of them, but haven't be able to push myself to finish the second TiTs game

I'm in the exact same boat as you. I feel daunted by the length of the games if the first is anything to go by I think. Pretty sure that's the problem anyway.
I enjoyed the first as well, but it just took so much out of me to play. I'm not so sure that's a good thing.

amazing

Dark Souls is as much as an RPG as Pokemon is considered one.

God forbid it's not turn base or strategy.

Would it be more of a jarpg? ajrpg? would it be an sjrpg/jsrpg?

I have tried many times to get into jrpgs but i never really manage. Despite basically having no interactivity in their story they still have problems with making games with good stories with proper pacing. The jrpgs i played also lack the interesting character customization and interesting loot you often find in wrpgs. In terms of battles i have yet to found a jrpg with combat i enjoy for a longer period of time which really screws the games up since they are often really long and full of grinding. I would really be interested in any suggestions on good jrpgs available on pc/ps4 but i have yet to found one i have really liked.

Everywhere you go Dark souls is classified as a jrpg. You can whine and be an autistic shitter as much as you want but you're never going to change that common conception

Is Xcom an rpg? Would it be considered one if it would be a real time third person?

Skies of Arcadia is fucking generic garbage, even the supposed innovation in the gameplay is dumb as shit.

SC is just the same as FC. 50-60 hours. That's not even long really.

...

Well judging from your pic, you just played the shittiest game from the series. That's to be expected.

Get a job.

It is when the vast majority of that is reading.

>The jrpgs i played also lack the interesting character customization and interesting loot you often find in wrpgs.

Because JRPGs are usually not about either of those two things. Customization has definitely become more prominent recently, but you're still playing the character story tends you to play. If you play the same expectations to JRPGs and WRPGs you'll just end up disappointed.

Never played Chrono Trigger. Would I enjoy it as much as I would have during its days if I were to play it today?

I have one. I played SC and FC only on weekends, 5-6 hours each of the 2 days? Something like that. Finished both in 3 months. Not that hard.

You forgot Onimusha Tactics

>Valkyrie
Best jRPG right here, but Cred Forums is full of fucking plebs.
Only terrible thing about the game is that you need a guide to get the good ending because the conditions are bullshit.

>playing a single jrpg let alone several

Tales of destiny
Chrono trigger
Star ocean 2
Final fantasy 6
Front mission 3
Final fantasy tactics
Dragon quest 6
Valkyrie profile

I played it two years ago for the first time and loved it. I liked snes version best because it looked ok fullscreen but ds version has all ps1 bonuses and videos plus map on second screen. Really good game way better than most jrpgs of that era.

Alright lets do this

>>Trails in the Sky
Started out alright but the stories pacing is horrible, item/character customization sucks and the combat gets boring and repetitive quickly. Dropped after 25 hours.

>>Tales of Zestiria
Shit story with shit pacing. Combat is a mess and was never fun to begin with. Dropped after 21 hours.

>>Last Remnant
Awful story and the combat sucked. Dropped it after 2 hours.

>>Final Fantasy XIII
Awful story, items, character customization, repetitive and boring combat. Forced myself to play through it.

>>Final Fantasy XIII-2 / Lightning returns
see above

>>The Gate of Firmament
Awful pacing and boring repetitive combat with litle character/item customization. Its chinese so it is japanese enough.

>>Conception II
Incredible boring and repetitive combat. Do not understand why a dungeon crawler lacks interesting loot and character development.

>>Fairy Fencer /some neptunia
Repetitive combat with little to no item/character customization.

>>Recettear
Loved this one

Perhaps i have the wrong mindset but the jrpgs have little in terms of interesting character/item customization and their combat usually is simply fighting the same encounter over and over again with a combat system that is usually really slow.

I also expect quite a lot from story focused rpg with no interactivity that expects me to put ~50 hours into them.

>I don't agree with him so he's stupid
;^)

im just going to leave this here

You should ask yourself if you still like games I think user.

most of the jrpgs you listed are incredibly mediocre. trails in the sky might be the only decent jrpg on that list. play some of the ps1 jrpgs.

>Tales of Zestiria
Shit

>Last Remnant
Shit

>Final Fantasy XIII/>Final Fantasy XIII-2 / Lightning returns
Shit

>The Gate of Firmament
Shit

>Conception II
Shit

>Fairy Fencer /some neptunia
Shit

No fucking shit you don't like JRPGs. Almost everything you've played is goddamn shit.

Also yes you have such a wrong mindset on JRPGs. Only few have character customization of how you want it.

oh ill also leave this.....

I know you said for PC/PS4 but if you can't find yourself liking anything from Then you simply aren't going to like this genre. At the very least I highly doubt you can ever like it. Just emulate some of the older JRPG's to see if you like anything. JRPG's aren't about loot. They are more about an epic story usually.

This game any good? I'm a huge FF fan, and, I've wanted to play this for years, and it just got added to Xbox One's BC games list.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dark_Souls#Gameplay

>Dark Souls is a third-person action role-playing game.

I have heard its pretty good. if you like classic turn based battles then you might enjoy it.

That's an ARPG not a JRPG.

I'm pretty sure he'd hate the old games because there is no customization on his tastes. JRPGs are fundamentally different from WRPGs in this regard.

>conception II

Isn't that the game where you're literally making magic child soldiers with everybody in school and basically use your children as pokemon?

Damn, that's fucked up.

It's what FF13 should've been, although it might be too traditional for some players. Quality of writing also varies between the short stories and actual game script.

What are the lewdest, most fanservicey PS3 JRPGs?

What makes a jrpg a jrpg and why can't there be a(n) jarpg/ajrpg?

>TiTS fans actually think those games are good

Is this the hottest new meme?
Even Nep fans are aware that their games are shit.

That has possibly my favorite ending of any video game.

I'm sorry, Terry. I'm sorry.

Nep

style and gameplay mostly. most jrpgs have the typical anime aesthetic.

how are they bad though? most of the complaints on the game I have heard are about it being too text heavy.

First boss is hard as fuck is all I can tell you.

Is that the one at the beach or something? I can't remember now.

But I do remember a gaming site getting buttblasted that they couldn't move past that boss.

A. the games are actually remakes of games from a better time (early 2000's)

B. Falcom fans are borderline delusional. I couldn't even stomach Ys VI yet they claim this stuff is the deepest hack n Slash mechanics in a ARPG.

>Combat that gets tiresome during the prologue alone
>~TEXT~
>Story isn't even engaging and has major pacing issues
>Awkward teens hiding their fee fees badly
>Shit OST
>Materia ripoff system

If I had to describe the series with one word, it would be boring.

Meh series. Average level design, rubbish combat, crap story. It's only popular because it has good graphics and music and it's multiplayer.
Shounen garbage for teens.
More shounen tripe. Worst recommendation in the thread so far. Even worse writing than the seiken densetsu series, except this time the game doesn't even have good music to hold it up.

Not even gonna bother with the rest of the thread. Someone probably recommends Legend of Dragoon...

Ragnarok Online

Touhou GoS
>Arcanist not tier 1
Makes most bosses a total joke with sleep

Sprites

Would you like to contribute to the thread and share the jrpgs that you like so we don't have to play these trash games?

I enjoyed it. Balance is shit though. Grind a few levels at the beginning and you'll walk through the rest of the game with your eyes closed.

Low poly 3D was produced fast and cheap. The models didn't even have skinning, limbs were separate objects.
Imagine you took a team of decade old veterans and told them "instead of squandering the budget in 3D shit, just draw the backgrounds, pretend you're modern indies except the team is a fuckton people"
Square produced 3 fucking fantastic and long as fuck with a fuckton content final fantasy games back to back, they even had the spare budget and time for fmvs. Now ot takes them 10 years to release a single car ride simulator that tries to be cinematic.

Lots of text is not bad. Cliche anime text is tho. Before it released on pc I heard that it's one of the best jrpgs ever made and when I played them all I found is mediocrity. Or you must be e weeb to love them I don't know. Also I don't get it why they think the worldbuilding is great.

hell yeah, i came into this thread just to say this. it's got a certain charm to it that makes it a jewel for me.

Baroque.

I fucking hated this game, it was so un-intuitive. I gave up after a while.

Demon's Souls

>thread started off nice
>bullies show up and ruin it for no reason

go away, this is a bully free zone

this man is correct. JRPGs are much more guided and linear in terms of both gameplay and story than WRPGs, but that isn't a bad thing as they still are somehow really enjoyable games.

>Low poly 3D was produced fast and cheap. The models didn't even have skinning, limbs were separate objects.

That actually wasn't the case because you're looking at it from today's POV. Keep in mind that shit was new technology back then. Reason why 3D trumped 2D is that basically anyone can model shit while 2D requires a certain level of artistry, or it did back then when pros were pushing it to the limit.

Is the translation still in the works?

Thread's near it's limit and people are sleeping now anyway.

It was nice in the mean time, added a few games to my wishlist.

There's like a metric ton of JAP-only JRPGs that got translated over the years. People should really get to Romhacking.net and check it out.

>castlevania style exploration built around beefed up zelda hookshot
>protecting that smile
>just enough plot to not weigh the game down

combat was pretty simple, but it was a fun experience and probably my favorite wii game.

I don't think that it's underrated so much as underexposed. Despite being available for people to play for over 20 years, I find that not many people have actually tried it out.

Pandora's Tower sadly got overlooked because it was part of the same initiative that included Xenoblade and Last Story which are both more heavy-hitting JRPGs.

anyone feel like opening a new thread?

Pretty good, although Secret of Evermore kind of stands out as not being a super strong title.

it's 4 am, I want to go to bed.

The best

...

Have you tried Shin Megami Tensei:Nocturne?

Chrono Trigger for DS or SNES? both emulated.

I played the shit out of this as a kid. The first one too, even though it's not as good.

>romancing SaGa
>not superior SaGa Frontier on PS1.
