His cabaret minigame is very fun and engaging. Actually fuck that, every single aspect of 0 is fun and engaging. Even walking around the city is fun since there's so much going on and the atmosphere is second to none.

Yeah, nothing major though. An NPC from 5 the dance teacher guy who gets fired is in 0 in a sidequest but that's it.

In general there are little references like that for all the games, Y1&2 in particular really, but you'll probably be okay.

Nope, it actually did extremely well. The problem is that in the English community the J-Drama stuff is hard to come by, especially subs, so you take what you can get. I'm watching episode 5 of season 1 for example and the timing of the subs is like three seconds delayed despite being specifically timed to these raws.

This guy made a complete guide to the game including every side quest. There are text transcripts for all story scenes and I had no trouble following the story.

If you want you can look up salty yen on youtube for a complete playthrough with on the fly translation. It's a little literal but you can understand what is going on.

Completed ishin almost 100% using these guides and I had a blast.

You really don't need to know anything for 0 since it is a prequel story, but you'll enjoy it more if you play the other ones since you get attached to the characters more. Some characters that appear in 1 and 2 make appearances in 0.

Nothing really! It's a prequel so it's a perfectly fine way to jump into the series from a story standpoint. Unfortunately if you ever go back to the series it'll be hard because you started at the most recent and well developed iteration with the deepest combat. Still totally doable though so don't let that discourage you.

Because this is a prequel and takes place early on in the lives of main characters form later on, you don't have to know much. Just that Goro Majima in other games is a mad dog japanese Joker. Whereas Kiryu is a passionate but kind man that usually keeps his cool. So it's a neat contrast in 0 where Kiryu is more hot blooded and aggressive whereas Majima is trying to reign hue in a lot of his hyper mania.

Play them in release order.
You'll appreciate the combat more.

In terms of story, the games usually come with recap videos to tell you the events leading up to the game but this is a prequel that takes place before the first game so you should be good
In terms of gameplay, it's a beat-em up so there's nothing that needs to be said that the tutorials don't teach

Okay, so since I just did this I'd like to ask again:
What is the best way to go about actually playing 1 and 2 HD without knowing Japanese while also aiming for 100% and understanding everything? I know with both 1 and 2 there's time-sensitive sub missions and stuff you have to do or you can't do them ever, and they fixed that with Kenzan onward, but are there any reliable guides that detail what is available when and how to do them? Should I just watch Youtube videos of the story while going through it(Hopefully with a no commentary video) and hope for sub mission videos as well? I know through the 10 hours or so that I played of 1 that most of the side stuff people say is inconsequential and not too big a deal in comparison to sub missions and the story, so I'm not too concerned about that.

To be fair, Ishin actually doesn't follow that cutscene rule 100% of the time. I mean yeah, the guys in the street fights walk away like they always do, but I think that during some of the combat stage it's pretty hard to argue that you aren't killing some of your opponents. There a couple of mini bosses were it clearly shows them dead after you're through with them, and there are also some sections were you use turrets and canons against waves of enemies.

Ryoma also kills a few people in the cutscenes anyway, so I don't really think they were going out of their way this time for their "no killing" rule. It works perfectly fine with the setting, and I'm glad they didn't go out of their way to make him some sort of batman like character.

Yeah, it seems like with the samurai themed games they just went "fuck it, these were violent times and someone like Musashi Miyamoto wouldn't really go out of his way to go the non lethal route, unless the player decided to", and I really appreciate that. It helps to immerse yourself in the time period.

Now in the mainline games, I perfectly understand why any of the main characters would go out of their way to avoid killing, especially in a low crime rate country like Japan. Which is one of the reasons those car shooting sections bother me, I mean can you imagine the huge police investigation that would happen if someone shot dead like 30 Yakuza in a Japanese freeway? Kiryu would become the most wanted man in Japan. Though I'm probably looking too much into this, I mean this is the same series were Kiryu gets into a bunch of streetfights and not a single cop is ever called.

Use them on whatever your preferred style is. You can max everything out by replaying the 100 man arena over and over again anyway. I personally like the sword only style and the pistol only style, that one is gamebreaking with the proper set up (though I guess everything can be really).

Kyoudai is a commonly used word in the Yakuza games. It pretty much just means elder brother and younger brother. That post was describing the plot to the Akira Kurosawa film Seven Samurai and suggesting that all its main characters be replaced with the characters from Yakuza.

Yeah, I had the same experience. It was clunky sure, but the story, atmosphere, and so-bad-it's-good dub made me power through it. Hell, Majima was difficult to fight since he moves like a cat on crack compared to you.

The problem isn't the complexity, but how frustrating the flaws of the gameplay can be. It still had its good points, though.
