I also don't see how the two keep getting compared, apart from being the same genre they have very little in common in terms of storytelling and gameplay. There is no reason for someone not to play one just because they already played the other.

the game is actually perfect for phones and tablets imo, and actually run better and at higher resolutions into comparison to the DS (assuming your phone isn't from 2007)

In terms of just time travel and small details it's not anything revolutionary but you definitely can't discredit all those plot twists in conjunction with one another. They came flying harder and in bigger numbers than any point in 999.

VLR and ZTD are deeply connected to each other, and ZTD doesn't pay off
If you play VLR you are going to want to play ZTD but you may not like it

The general consensus is:

999 - Fantastic, easily the best overall
VLR - Pretty good. Lacks the tension of 999 but makes other small improvements. Ends on a complete cliffhanger unfortunately which is what made people disappointed at the time. Otherwise pretty good, puzzles are way harder here for some reason.
ZTD - Enjoyable disappointment. Don't go in expecting anything and you'll be entertained, or at least saved by the memes

Even if you play the next two games it's not like it taints the existence of 999 in any way since it's such a good story already standalone, so go for it.
