Can I be honest here? This is excellent writing. It subverts the expectations we had going in, what was once a treacherous situation is now an unexpected gag. But it also comments on how we waste our limited food and energy supply, and our attitude towards the matter. The scene starts out with suspense, wondering what could be behind that door, representing the initial realization that humanity might not be able to sustain itself. Then mario sees all the toasters.
A growing population, consuming fossil fuels and pumping CO2 into the atmosphere at an exponential rate. The coasts are receding. The great plains region, once known as the breadbasket of the world, is losing productivity. Every month, the last 12 months are the hottest on record. The Earthhas been laid to waste, just as the toasters are wasting all of the hotels electricity.
With acceptancce of this situation come, initially depression, but also a nihilistic swagger. Mario unplugs the toasters, after all what else is there left to lose at this point. If you're going out, you might as well go out with a bang. As the toasters (representing humanitys impact on earth) leave behind their final shell of a heritage, the toast, natural order is restored to the hotel (the hotel represents earth).
The best part is, it actually makes you feel this Nihilism. You probably laughed at least once in this scene. Its quite sobering to really understand the uselessness of it all.
