As a hack writer, I feel him. I feel him. But whether it's (You)r story the thing you have to remember about this particular medium is that it's Their game. I don't say that to diminish the significance of them, I'm just reinforcing that trying to remove the interactivity doesn't make more story, it makes less game. If there are no options or replayability incentive you're reducing the experience to something that can be seen on Youtube and the game skipped.

Not all games need to have open options, but it's not a good philosophy to actively try to remove them, especially because of what ultimately sounds like personal dislike more than anything.
