WW1 is somehow worse, it feels like it's being mocked and the people's lives cheapened.
WW2 has had plenty of exposure and the mainstream narrative is of a heroic fight against the bad guys which is a fine setting for a video game, the run and gun also fits a bit better with the setting.
But doing this with the first big WW1 game leaves me bitter, it'll colour people's impression of the period. I don't like people pretending it was anything other than hell on earth and a waste of life - even if other wars could be described as the same, there's just something about the great war.
It may not be logical but it's how I and I believe many others feel.

My biggest gripe with BF1 is the sheer amount of wasted potential it represents. An authentic (note that I did not use the word 'realistic') WW1 Battlefield game could have been truly unique - the time period is just modern enough to fit the BF formula, but just antiquated enough to make it play unlike any BF game before it.

Given how satisfying the bolt-actions were to use in the beta I don't think you'd even mind if semi and fully automatic weapons were limited on each side; though I do wonder how balance would work in instances like the Lee-Enfield being plain better than the Gewehr 98 - the SMLE's bolt could be operated without taking the finger off of the trigger by a properly trained soldier, i.e. all of them.

WWII was bigger, with a higher death toll and is more significant now in a cultural sense, but humanity learned grave and valuable lessons from the way WWI was fought. It should be venerated but not glorified the way it has been in this game.

If you read historical accounts, for the most part things like this didn't happen.
Usually close fighting was done with grenades. And typically one side would surrender pretty quickly.
A lot of times it was as simple as flanking the enemy and asking him to surrender and he would surrender.

Hollywood is really, really, really, really bad with any kind of historical accuracy and are more like historical revisionists who tell tall tales of fantasy, rather than actual reality.

And with the exclusion of a few places like verdun, somme, etc. WW1 wasn't the stereotypical trench warfare it's always depicted as - and soldiers in trenches were rotated out every couple weeks.

There was a lot more maneuver involved everywhere else in the war except a line of fortifications running between Germany and France.

The Russians had way more and often better tanks than the Reich combined with way more artillery, trucks and airplanes. Yet they still managed to lose literal boatloads of tanks in every single engagement. How do you even do this?

Honestly that opening had great potential to be a very powerful moment. Especially with how you're supposed to die, and every time you do it displays a name with birth year and year of death, and then the ending part of that section with the final charge and ramping up of the music. But it just comes off as so superficial because I'm not engaged enough due to multiple reasons. I think it should have done more than just names and roles. First off, give me the battlefield location, let me know if this is France, Austria etc. I guess these are supposed to be the Harlem Hellfighters but I don't know, the setting is now further removed. Add more to the names, where are they from? Why did they enlist? What Unit are they from? Also, why open with the black dude, jump to someone else who has a totally different weapon, and then end with the black guy again who apparently lived through the whole ordeal but doesn't have a scratch on him? Also the facial animations were pretty fucking laughable. That "emotional" ending doesn't do much if the black dude and the German dude just go "yeah man war is bad dude lets be bffs" and lower their weapons with fresh faces. What is this? A fucking sitcom? It just doesn't feel as grounded as it's wanting you to think it is if you know anything more than "WW1 happened".

Totally dependent on the time. Russia had the best tanks early war because the Germans were utilizing similar doctrine that the Americans and British used when they hit mainland Europe in 1944. However once it became clear that having hulking giant mobile anti-infantry guns with no anti-tank or anti anything else capabilities was usless, and since T34s made out of recycled bicycles were steamrolling German lines, Germany had to change shit up. Which led to the Tiger and upgraded PaK guns.

Yeah the T34 could still go toe to toe with the upgraded Panzer 4. But the Tiger tank was the king of tanks until later war. But that was due to Germany having lost almost all material supplies and were making armor and weapons out of pure shit. The Panther tank looks like it should've been a nightmare machine that feeds on the blood of it's enemies, abut because of the piss poor materials and the "oh shit we need something new just throw what the fuck ever on there" internal designs, it was worse off than the Sherman.

I'd say that everyone in that war simultaneously represented the best and worst of humanity.

I didn't have too many problems with it. In fact I pretty much liked like. Sure it wasn't too grim dark but they had to take some liberties with it to appeal to more people. The lack of bolt action weapons is a major concern though and should be fixed soon as possible.

The date of each soldiers life every time you die was real nice to see. The feeling of soldiers clashing against each other in shades of gray under mortar fire and flamethrowers was decently handled. Could've used more artillery fire but ehh. The showing of shell-shock and the ending scene was dramatically handled well too.

I personally think people are blowing this out of proportion. I get black soldiers had below average numbers but I thought this battle showed one of which they fought. The guns definitely need to be changed but everything else was fine.

Pic related, Germans didn't even inflict a 2:1 kill ratio against the Soviets in WW2 despite the myths. The differences in deaths was largely because the Germans just killed a lot of civilians and prisoners.

With regards to WW1, the Germans inflicted slightly more than they sustained on the Western Front but not anything notable. I think it's about 1.2% more.

This is also a lie. The number was about 120,000 and it was formed briefly in 1945 after years of the Germans trying to prevent it. Desperation forced their hand.

As soon as they were deployed in Czechoslovakia in 1945 half the forces deserted. They saw a single moment of action against the Soviets where they were defeated. The rest of the force later aided Czechs in throwing the Germans out of Prague because the Germans indeed were treating them worse than the Soviets had.

but it leaves out how OKW laid out a nice, sensible plan in Case Blue to take raid the war industry in Stalingrad (it was never meant to occupied) and annex the oil fields, until Hitler comes along and shits on the plan by further fragmenting the armee gruppe south and extending the objectives to occupying stalingrad and preparing to assault across the volga. this completely overstretched the germans, who had no choice but to rely on romanian and italian divisions to shore up the flanks... and we all know how that turned out.

also, soviet numbers and statistics are notoriously unreliable. prisoners taken by the ussr were largely carried off to camps in siberia, which isn't exactly a hospitable environment.

i was mostly wondering about the early stages of the war
i'm not an expert on the subject, but i heard that the OKW planned to concentrate all their forces on reaching and capturing moscow as quickly as possible, but were forced to delay that push due to interference from hitler, and when they finally did arrive the red army has had enough time to reinforce and entrench its positions in and around moscow, rendering a capture of the city impossible

then again, asking "what if hitler hadnt interfered with OKW strategy" is like asking "what if stalin hadn't murdered nearly all competent officers and generals of the red army"

The reason the drive to Moscow was halted was (another) massive Soviet army was grouping to the south and about to go on the offensive. The German central army had many units redirected south and successfully encircled and destroyed the army. Ignoring the army to continue the drive to Moscow would have been an awful decision.

Not to mention even if southern forces had been able to contain the army and the central army drove on to Moscow in full strength, the city still would have been quite heavily defended, and German logistics still would have been awful and overstretched in getting close to Moscow, and AND even if they somehow managed to contain/defeat the Russian army without redirecting panzer units, reached Moscow while keeping supply lines intact, and managed to capture Moscow/at the very least contest Moscow and make it untenable for the Soviets to use it as the rail hub/communications lines, it still would have been very unlikely the Soviets would have capitulated. Even if the Germans somehow captured Moscow the Siberian Reserves still show up come winter and still catch the Germans completely off guard, and if you want to say the Germans hold Moscow instead of it just turning into Stalingrad before Stalingrad, well no we're getting into the realm of "WW2 was actually a simulation and the Germans were using savestates."

Also Stalin didn't murder the competent commanders, he sent them to gulags (along with some less than competent commanders) which funnily enough I also talked about in the thread.

because drone tanks can't maintain themselves.

modern tanks are at best partially automatized with auto-loaders, but even then US Abrmas UK Challenger and Germany Leopard prefer having human loaders. research suggests the quicker loading is a marginally faster, and against the benefit of having an extra crewman, not worth it for the most part.

UAVs are a totally different game from AFVs, since they aren't as exposed, have a safe place to fly back to, and aren't expected to operate 24/7 for on end.
