sword and shield is practical for battles, otherwise I like two-handing which makes it look natural for some weapons.

Dual wield is cooler.

I like spears and shields. Spears offer a lot of range and don't require as much skill as a sword when using with a shield.

I can't think of any action games, but:

It's a game-breaking strategy in FF2, because shields raise evasion, so if you dual-wield shields for long enough (and attack every chance you get), you become untouchable.

I think it's also somewhat viable in Dwarf Fortress adventure mode (but I've only heard that) and Elona (you can more than dual wield shields by splicing extra arms on).

Halberds would be under two hander. Unless somehow you use them with a shield (Not including Dark Souls of course).

if we're talking mount and blade, single hander no shield is the way to go, it's quicker to block than a shield, and quicker to attack than an two hander
