never saw one in person, only saw a demo unit at EB Games way back in the day playing Sonic Adventure that was borked
Ahead of its time, underrated console. Probably the best one for fighting games.
I love it. There's a goo-ish dreamcast thread in /vr/ right now.
Bonus: Volgar the Viking was ported to Dreamcast and you can play for free. volgarr.rkd.zone
A grossly romanticized console.
Without Capcom, the library aged like milk. Jet Set is the sole 1st party game from it that isn't ass.
>fantastic library of games, especially for only being on the market for only 3 years
>good controller
>innovative ideas, but a bit early for some of them
>NO DVD PLAYER
based
virtua tennis is still fun
It showed up at the wrong time.
loved how even when sega was bleeding money they were still willing to take risks and make weird/experimental games
How's pc emulation of Shenmue 1 & 2?
Jet Set hasn't aged that well either. Played it on Steam recently and it's slow as fuck, awkward to control. Cool style but a little boring.
Most posters here are too young to have even been born when this came out.
Meh system but Sega was doing crazy shit back then. Set the stage for the best controller to come, the xbox pad. Not much else to say about it.
Cool features for the time and nice homebrew.
Really overhyped library unless you're into home ports of fighting games. The only worthwhile game that didn't get ported that gen anyways was JSR and Grandia 2 (since the PS2 and original PC versions are busted). I guess JSRF is almost a remake but it's worse in a lot of ways so it doesn't really count.
I don't see skies of arcadia what a weak ass pic
I liked it but it was released in America when the PlayStation 2 was gonna be a thing, not to mention the PS2 had a DVD player and people discovered you can easily pirate Dreamcast disks. I remember always switching between using the PS2 console and my Dreamcast.
>Most
>tfw you're too old to still be on here
And I'll be hitting 27 tuesday...
cannon spike didnt get ported
no gaems
Dreamcast was amazing at bringing the arcade experience to a home console. It's like a Dave and Busters or Boomers or whatever the arcade is named on your coast, only you don't have to deal with screaming kids. It was also a martyr for experimental gaming, so I give it respect.
Wrong, I was born in 1998. I was 2 when it came out. My little brother was not even born when September 11 happened.
Last great console. All that came after was just a pc imitation
>born in 98
I was memorizing Tupac songs back then.
Jsrf is objectively better in almost every single way except the rock it on remix is worse
did the dreamcast deserve to die?
Just bought one last week, I'm having a blast. Currently going through Evolution and Skies.
It was destined to die the moment it came out without a DVD player.
Fun fact: Millennial is actually a term for people who were born between 1980-2000. If you were born in that era, you are a millennial, no exceptions. Back to the discussion of Dreamcast now.
The gamecube didn't have a DVD player and survived.
thats because nintendo was doing financially well and their handhelds were selling like hot shit
There were 4 consoles that gen, and three of them didn't have a DVD player.
Dreamcast was also underpowered and Sega was already somewhat struggling.
xbox had dvd support, you just had to buy that stupid dongle to unlock it
Hell no. I would have loved to see the Dreamcast live as long as the GameCube and Xbox at least, maybe even towards how long the PS2 lasted.
If the Dreamcast had a DVD player and Saturn backwards compatibility, it would have been more expensive at launch. Not having two analog sticks or bumpers/2 extra buttons also was a bad thing for multiplatform titles, which sucks because the Dreamcast was easy to port to being that the OS is Windows CE.
The PS2 SLAUGHTERED the Dreamcast in Japan as soon as it released because it had a DVD Player. Before the PS2, DVDs weren't even a big market in Japan. The PS2 was the cheapest DVD player on the market AND played games.
It had the power of Nintendo backing it up. God, gen 6 had the best era for video games. We will never get such a huge library of good games like that era.
Why not just release an external DVD drive?
>no Vyse or any Skies of Arcadia reps
You had one job.
It was the last good console. Everything that came after it was meh at best.
>fantastic library of games
like what
because what's the point? It's not gonna convince people to switch over, it's a convenience factor.
>The Dreamcast can play DVD's and Games, but you need to buy the dongle that costs $80!
>The PS2 can play games and movies! It's all in the price!
It's one of the things that made Blu-Ray a success too.
Of all the video game platforms of it's time, it had the strongest association with late 90's/early 2000s pop culture with games like Sonic Adventure 2, Space Channel 5 and Jet Set Radio. Most of us born between 1979 and 1992 probably had one of our more fonder memories around this generation.
Back then games were a lot cheaper to make and boomers/beancounters hadn't ruined gaming quite yet.
The Dreamcast was a role-model console that all other consoles should strive to be. It also died for our sins, sad to see we squandered it's sacrifice.
I don't agree with anons ITT saying it's underrated, maybe it was at one point but I don't think that's the case any more
I never owned one but I have fond memories of it from when I'd play it at a cousins. It just seemed so fucking cool to me back then. Growing up I was a Nintendo kid (and eventually Playstation) and my cousin was the Sega kid so Sega consoles were always like this amazing exotic thing to me and when the dreamcast came out and my parents wouldn't get one for me it was like nothing that was out there. It had memory cards with a screen in it and these 3D sonic games and MVC2! It was so amazing to me. Even after I got a PS2 which was in all regards better I always wanted one.
>mp3
>a machine
jesus christ grandma
I have one stored in the basement of my grandparents' house.
I loved it when I was a kid.
>it's one of the things that made Blu-Ray a success too.
By that logic, why didn't HD DVD win out, when the Xbox 360 was both much cheaper and had it built in?
360 didn't have it built in. You had to buy a separate disk drive to play them.
oh, whoops
shit
>inb4 some faggot responds about how they played it perfectly in 9k or some shit
just buy a dreamcast for like 30 bucks and some cdrs
Best system for Fgames.
-SF3 3Strike.
-Kof 2000
ETC.
>good controller
No. Cool controller maybe.
Amazes me how it managed to get such consistent library in only 3 years.
neither did
>Virtual-On Oratorio Tangram
>Segagaga
>Gundam Side Story 0079
>Daytona 2001
also Sturmwind, DUX, and Gunlord
Literally Sega's GameCube
I bought a Sega Saturn, so the Dreamcast felt like Sega made it up to me for sticking with them. And now they're "dead". I miss you Sega.
At least nu-sega gave us Bayonetta
Agreed
That's like saying Sega's responsible for Persona 5
they are literally responsible for it though
Neat machine.
mine is gathering dust under my desk right now
should probably hook it up
Honestly? It really didn't. The only thing that killed it was Sega's bad decisions prior to the thing's release. It had actual developer support with actual big-name games, it was considered easy to develop for, Sega themselves put out some pretty fucking quality stuff, had good online support, etc.
Visually, the DC was a gigantic step up from the PS1 and a moderate step up from the N64 (most N64 games look embarrassing in comparison to DC games, but as good example of N64 power, Rush 2049 on N64 doesn't look massively worse than on DC, keeping actual track geometry and draw distance the same, just worse textures because lol N64 and a lower (but stable) framerate because it's an older machine). You had games routinely running at 60fps (with dips), at full TV 480i/576i or true 640x480 VGA resolution instead of 240p, clear textures and models that didn't look like ultra-blocky approximations of what you were supposed to be seeing.
DC deserved better than it got.
I that was retarded, but it turns out it was entirely because of licensing reasons.
>I that
should be
>I thought that
But people always say that Nintendo was responsible for Bayonetta 2
I still have mine from 9 9 99 I think its pretty overrated desu
