As someone who learned 2 foreign languages to a proficient level I can tell you that there is no fucking way anyone has time to learn an entire language before going to a country for a fucking business trip (where the business will be conducted in English anyway).

It took me like 3 years to get good at the first language and 2 to get good at the second language, and I was studying for 6+ hours every day.

Japanese and Korean share very similar grammar. There are still some major differences, but the two are much closer than say, Japanese and English. I think it is definitely comparable to learning 2 Romance languages. Korean also has a bunch of words that sound very similar to Japanese words and probably have the same etymology.

Learning a third language is much easier than learning a second language because you already know how to do it, and I think the area of your brain that learns languages must be more developed. When I initially started learning Japanese I had great trouble remembering words but by the time I learned Korean it was much easier for me.

As for your other question, I went out of my way to make friends with a LOT of Japanese people when I initially started learning. I talked to every single Japanese person I could find. I then did exchange in Japan and exclusively studied Japanese. Once I finished the top proficiency test I started studying Korean (while I was still in Japan). I had a couple of Korean friends but not many. Other than one month long trip to Korea I haven't spent any time in the country. Although my Korean is okay it is not nearly as good as my Japanese. Immersion is the most important thing in my opinion.

I think most people already know that Korean and Japanese are written differently. Korean was very very easy to learn to read though. You can learn everything you need to know in like an hour.

In my years learning Japanese and living in Japan I have never ever met anyone who learned the language solely for cartoons or VNs and reached a high level of proficiency.
