This might be just me but I think it would've been better if Nepgear actually went insane / crazy with the power of the sword and went around killing the party members like that, maybe the more she killed the more horrible the player actually felt as he would see the whole thing unfold because as it stands in the game as is all characters just end up accepting their deaths after a quick "boss fight" and the writing is just terrible I can't really feel anything at all, it could've been a great alternate route but they just kinda botched it in my opinion

Though it is important to note that RB1 is it's own thing. The real story starts in RB2.

There's also the spinoffs which are hit or miss depending on how much you like the characters.

Producing Perfection is an idol sim. Action U is a Senran Kagura spinoff down to the clothes getting ripped off. Hyperdevotion Noire is an SRPG that is very devisive among the fandom as either being decent or shit. Finally, there's Blanc Vs Zombies which releases today IIRC. It's a more polished Action U from what I understand but without the clothes destruction and more content.

How can Noire even compete?

Mk2/RB2, Victory/RB3 and V-II all take place in the same setting. V-II even references and brings back plotlines and events from those two games.

HDN1 and RB1 have nothing to do with the other mainline games, or even each other (since RB1 is radically different in various parts) though, and none of the numerous spinoffs have any connection to anything either.

I'm not so sure about that. RB3 technically takes place after RB2 just in a different dimension. Can't say anything about V-II as I have not played that one as of yet.

HDN1 ends with the CPUs giving up their powers for good and living the rest of their lives as mortal humans.

CH clearly wasn't thinking ahead about sequels when making the game, since it didn't exactly leave any room for that. So with Mk2, they completely ignored the events of the first game and went with a different setting.

V-II references things that happened in both Mk2 and Victory, some of which even ends up being relevant to V-II's plot.

It's extremely disconnected from the rest of the games. RB1 did away with a lot of the more serious elements HDN1 had too in favor of making it a lighter-hearted game, such as changing the beginning so that the other CPUs all teamed up against Purple Heart due to Arfoire influencing them, when in HDN1 the three did it on their own volition without any outside manipulation.

It's the only game in the series that actually did something with the "console war taken literally" concept.

Well, it is important to note that the original HDN plays VERY differently than the RB1 does.

From what I've seen, the combat is far slower. Plus there's the whole RNG healing bit.

However, that scenario does play out in RB1, as well. The requirements for that ending are just different.

It's also important to note that the true final boss is a one-on-one fight, however, this can be circumvented in RB1 with the DLC characters and the un-lockable CPU candidates, from what I understand. I say this because that's the ending I'm going for this time. I got the normal ending last time.

RB2 has several endings: Normal, True, Makers ending, one for each nation, the infamous Conquest Ending, and the Holy Sword Ending (which wasn't in the original from what I understand but has the Conquest Ending's requirements along with getting all the CPUs lily ranks up to a certain level).

RB3 has only, well, 3 endings: Normal, Good (though not good at all if you're a Nepgear fans), and True.

Rebirth 1: Main 4 CPUs introduction and character development. The plot doesn't follows the current canon.

Rebirth 2: 4 CPU candidates introduction and character development. Current canon. Imho, it's not the best game to begin, it gets repetitive real fast, unlike Rebirth 1 that remade the first game in the series, Rebirth 2 is almost the same as MK2 which was pretty meh. It's worth playing tho, because Chika... yeah alright also the candidates who are mostly omitted in Rebirth 3/Victory except for Nepgear.

Rebirth 3/Victory: Plutia, Peashy and Ultradimension CPUs introduction and character development. Current canon. It's a lot more polished than the previous games, yet it has plenty of references to the previous games.

Victory 2: Current canon. Wouldn't play this until you tried any of the previous games.

The anime follows a different canon, but it has references from all the first three games. Worth watching if you like the game so far. Mind that it contains heavy spoilers for Rebirth 3/Victory.

All the spinoff games follow different universes, so they are non canon.

Canon doesn't matter too much with Neps. This is not a series that is dependent on the plot of the past. You only lose out on in-jokes for the most part.
