The story was always good, the music is exceptional, the gameplay is the only one debated between "shit" and "just ok".

The very reason we have so many Nier/DoD thread are precisely to talk about the fantastic story. There's a ton of stuff to talk about it, and even though at first I wasn't all that surprised about it myself, the more you dig into it, the better it gets.

Otherwise I don't get why she didn't just tell Nier that he was killing innocent people.

She could heard them but she also totally ignored them or said Tyrann to block their voices. Her first experiences with shades were so bad that she is even more full into the kill all shades camp than Nier.

Tyrann has blocked out the voices for her because she started going insane the first time around.
So she knows, she just actively represses it herself too.

Kaine is even more short sighted when it comes to shades than Nier. Blame Hook and Tyrann.

I also held off on playing this game, mostly because of Drakengard was the most painful game to play, but dammit if this isn't one of my favorite games ever.

To me DoD is it's own genre of comfy despair. Not counting myself I've only ever met two other people who actually enjoyed the experience of playing it.

It needs a devotion on your part, but it's a superb experience. Probably the best game among the worst games in PS2.

I tried to play DoD only once and it was definitely a curious experience.

I get that a lot of people don't like DoD1 OST (I didn't like it at first either), but it's so fucking deranged that I love it now. Like you said, the music captures the insanity and malice of the game perfectly, some of the best music I've seen in a game, not just for the compositions themselves, but for the theme and tone behind them. I hope Okabe experiments a bit more with that sound in the future if he feels comfortable with it.

I just noticed, read the version of fire of prometheus linked in the pastebin, the other is more accurate, but I think it isn't finished.

I don't know if overall I'd call it the best of last gen (probably) but at least story-wise, it's the best by a ridiculously large margin.

The story is great, however not everyone likes the genre of the story, or have the attention span to enjoy it.

The gameplay was kind of nice when it came out, but it has not aged well.

The music is objectively fantastic.

That thing about the foreshadowing was a nice read.

It's good, but it's not THE BEST FUCKING GAME. Let's face it, the gameplay was really sub-par, the overworld was pretty boring and limited, not to mention the amount of backtracking you have to do (and don't get me started on the shitty sidequests either).

Even from last gen there were a ton of great games:

Saying NIER is better than all of these is very pretentious. Don't get me wrong I'm not shitting on it, I love NIER but it has plenty of flaws, and it's certainly not the best game of last gen.

I was talking specifically about story though. Even then, I like most of the games you listed, but I wouldn't consider any of them as good as Nier except for DaS and Bayo.

But to call it pretentious is pointless (the word doesn't even have real meaning), this is entirely up to each person and doesn't mean it has to be a flawless game.

I just tend to value story over gameplay if only for how rare good stories are, so I probably prefer Nier over any other game from last gen, the same way I prefer Xenogears from the PS1 era despite being pretty much unfinished.

Basically, I care more about emotion than reason. I'm more interested in the themes and intentions of a game, than its actual technical execution because it makes it unique.

Nier is better than Assceed 2, Vanquish, SSBB, Red Dead Redemption, Dishonored and Mass Effect (2 and 3)

I find the story about Nier and his daughter to be really underwhelming, that moment after Emil turned into his current body gave me a slap in the face, i kinda feel pity for him, some moments in the game are legitimately good. is also something that i look forward to in Automata.

I think you are supposed to feel more bad abot Shadowlord than our Nier. Also about what a misguided and blind quest without even stopping to think about if the other side is more than what you tunneled vision make you believe can lead up to.

I started this game about 4 days ago and was wondering if there's any information I should know going in or if it's just linear and I just play without worrying about anything. I just got to the 5 year timeskip and can use other weapon types now, if that helps. I assumed the choice with Kaine would have led me to an ending of some sort?

Hey, so I was able to do some research and apparently there are multiple translations.

The one you quoted was a fan translation from a tumblr page that has 404'd. However, the other translation omits the "yet it was hers" lines and seems to imply that the penis is actually from the shade that possesses her. Is there any way to actually confirm whether it is hers or the shades?
