Only 1/3 DLC packs is any good, and they're modular, not required to enjoy the game.
The mods totally make up for it.

Alien Hunters has the biggest bullshit mechanic to make the bosses challenging, in return it rewards you with ridiculously OP armor. I'd say both those things fuck up game balance.

Shen's gift, the MECs are great. Hunters has annoying aliens that will run away and harass you until you kill them. Prepare to have a couple dead soldiers if you fuck up, though I think the Archon and Berserker are the worst. Plus the armor and guns they have is good but you can only have one of each.

You can make the most badass ODST who ever lived.
