The PR sold a lot of copies, but it also caused a lot of refunds, meaning it didn't really work so great. On top of that, the PR also caused a bad reputation for Sean Murray and Hello Games, which will cause them a whole lot of problems in the future. It really wasn't a good PR strategy.

But in his interviews I did not get that impression of him, I suspect he is actually just really ashamed and mortified of having made a game that might have sold well on hype alone, but that will forever be one of the most reviled ones.
