It's funny because I work with some of the most normal people ever, yet they watch anime more often than they do cartoons.

The biggest problem is that cartoons these days have somehow become more niche than anime. With anime you can find almost anything you want. Cartoons are limited to either stereotypical 13+ non-serialized shlock or raunchy adult comedies / drama.

I pretty much have to stick to anime because there's few real fantasy or sci-fi cartoons these days.
