And I'd completely disagree, body sliders are a poor attempt to mask the developers inability to come up with an interesting fantasy setting with interesting races. Look at a game like BDO that goes for a very standard fantasy race setup, they don't even let you play as non humans and instead use body sliders so everyone can make their personal fapbait characters.

People used to and still do play "ugly" races, just because casuals prefer to be pretty humans doesn't mean the entire MMO genre has to become modded skyrim online. While every country has great artists, there's clearly a lot of shitty ones coming from specific places and it won't stop. Japan has their shitters, but are not as common or noticable. Meanwhile western shitters (in particular from US and UK) are very vocal, praised as gods by other people with terrible taste and push their shit including Patreon hard. Unironically yes. Having the game be relatable to the player is one of the major aspects that constantly looked into during game development and conception. Remeber the resistance series? Did you know that the game story and setting was originally suppose to be something like halo or mass effect? The original idea was to have the player go to different alien worlds, fight off reptilian aliens and engage in time travel shenanigans. The entire concept was scrapped however when the lead developers and higher ups thought that it wasnt "relatable" and went with the alternate ww2 idea.

The problem with using Moogles, Nu Mo, Bangaa, and Seeq instead of what they're already using is that the majority of FF14 players wouldn't play those races to begin with. Some people play the game just to dress up their characters in pretty dresses and role play. You would end up with probably 70-75% of the player base as humans, maybe 10-15% as moogles, and the remaining 15% as the other races.

Just look at the racial distribution in WoW. Half the population is either Human or Elf, and that's before they added two new elf races.

Yeah, but WoW isn't as big on dress up as FF14 is. In WoW you're limited to battle armor. In FF14 you're able to tank in pretty pink dresses, skirts, or bikinis and you have access to 5x as may hairstyles. People would be more likely to prettier races if the game has more customization.

In general FF14 customization is lacking compared to proper sculpting some MMOs employ. I'm not even talking to crazy level like BDO or APB, but FF14 certainly lacks in that aspect considering some features are locked to certain faces and such.

In a way, yes. Most people are brainlets with a lack of imagination. This means for the viewing audience, it means they can't relate to things that look foreign to them. You know all this sjw inclusiveness stuff? That's part of it. People can't even relate to characters if they aren't the same skin tone or gender or sexual preference, let alone a completely alien looking creature. You can hate sjw types all you want, but they're basically just obeying their brainlet human nature to want to play as characters that they can relate to. On the other end are the brainlet writers who can barely write a convincing human character, let a alone a unique alien entity. Think about how many poorly written characters you've seen in popular culture that are flawless mary sues or generic walking trope. If you can't write an interesting human character that has an interesting motivation for their actions, you most likely do not have the skills to write an interesting alien character.

Laziness is not an excuse. There are ways to get around modeling separate versions of the same armor. For example instead of having a different armor model for a level 10, 20, 30, 40, 50 etc armor, They can have a new armor model for 25, 50, 75 and 100. You get new armor with better stats in between, but you only get a new armor model every milestone level. Endgame comes out and you only release a new armor model every few major updates or whatever. I want a game where you can play as fucking centaurs and dryders and harpies. I wouldn't give a shit if they took shotcuts and made less armor models if it means I could play as a unique race that other MMOs are too lazy to touch.

I've played a healer and while the job is important, I did feel a lot more engaged trying to minmax my own DPS through gear, positioning and rotations than I felt staring at health bars. Healing is reactive whack-a-mole that doesn't feel particularly rewarding. The one time I actually enjoyed healing was in PvP back when Arena PvP first came out in World of Warcrap.

Interestingly, many newer MMOs have changed the healer role a lot. Healers are no longer pure healers that just sit back and heal, but rather, take a much more active role in combat. Games like Blade & Soul don't even have healers, for better or for worse.

Disc Priest heals by doing damage. All you have to do is place a buff on whoever is taking damage, then go about your rotation. Your damage abilities will automatically heal a percentage of damage done for whoever has the buff. There are only a couple of healing spells for when shit gets too dicey.

Yep. The Guild Wars 2 devs ran into this problem with the Charr. They designed special animations and shit for them but only outfits that are specially designed for them look good. Taking an outfit for a human and slapping on a beast like that causes all kinds of ugly stretching and clipping and player complaints about it.

Easier to just avoid that problem all together.

Xenoverse 2 did races pretty okay

They are pretty odd when you consider that standing upright Charr already existed in Guild Wars 1 but went with the hunchback, more beast like version to make them more unique, but at the cost of no capes and clipping.

I'd bet next expac. People expected them in Stormblood after it came out that Heavensward was between Au Ra and Viera and they even showed off their final concept art with racial gear and everything and when no new race ever came in the SB announcements then people really poked them about it. Yoship told people hoping for them to not give up and with the Ivalice raid right now it's a perfect time to tease their addition. If they don't come next expansion they will probably never happen, especially with the way that SE has been cutting back on additions.

They would have been more tolerable at least if there was some diversity in their appearances. They could have been divided like midlanders and highlanders where one has males and females that look more like the current females and vice versa with the males. Or have ones that alternated with the current design of au ra and then switched for the other clan with the taller, more intimidating females and smaller, less imposing males. It would at least fit with the lizard theme.

Much easier to just make 2 and recolor them though, as every other clan but humans is like this. They only divided those up because the 1.0 devs included the highlander male and forced the devs to make a highlander female for 2.0. When roes got females and cats got males they just recolored them for clans rather than making them significantly different.

I know for sure you could try the Paragon Chat, Starbound or Champions Online if you want to make a bird character in an mmo. Sadly, the latter require you to cough up a lot of money to do so. Champions Online also allows you to make insect and a whole zoo of animals as your main character. Alien Soldier and Modded Morrowind let you play as a bird character if you want to play offline. I know there lots of simulator and all that good stuff for bugs.

EQ is really the only MMO I've played (where you actually pick a race, not make something from scratch like Champions online) that beats out WoW for being able to play wildly different races. Sure there's humans, big humans, short humans, and different flavors of elves but then there's frog people, rat people, cat people, actual tiny fairies, at least two different kinds of lizard people that are very different from one another, and the horribly disgusting but amazing trolls.

Minotaurs are currently one of the least played races but that could be attributed to the fact that no one seems to understand how to play their unique class and think it sucks. I plan on rolling guineacean knight when it comes out but i could see minotaurs being scares unless they give WoW levels of customization to them and make them more like taurens.

That's one of my biggest problems with WoW. They add new stuff and there is very obvious improvement over the years but everything else stays just as old looking because they never update it. There's a huge clash between old and new and it can be pretty jarring like in that pic where the body, hair and face are relatively new but the armor and the environment that they're in is like 14 years old.

If you don't mind age of this mmo, Champions Online had many options for you choose from. It really helps that the dev that added these is a furfag herself.

The dragons were one of the races that actually made it into the game, and in the end the way it worked was they had an entirely separate class and equip system from other races, and had to do long, and involved quests to advance to adult and ancient, and started off as weak hatchlings.

When I was like ten, my aunt mmo-addict introduced me to Everquest. I made an Iskar and played it the whole weekend I was there. She couldn't answer any of my questions about the game besides the basics because she had never played evil stuff and kept making fun of me for playing an evil character, but I absolutely loved it.

Too bad I basically lived with dial-up until I was eighteen, and by then Everquest was old news. I wish we could go back to MMOs like that.

EQ2 was fucked hard not just from design, but from releasing just a few months before WoW and having a horribly designed engine.

I had a similar fate but SWG and Trandoshan. Same story, got a taste of the game from a relative, couldn't afford it, finish college, view the state of the game, the game got kill for ToR, etc. There are emulators but it just not the same.

I thought it was so strange that people defended the microtransactions in GW2 because they were just cosmetic when the entirety of Guild Wars 2's endgame IS cosmetics. Ironically enough, the original 1.0 release of XIV also had cut corners. It makes more sense as to why ARR was rushed, but you'd think they'd try and give themselves some more time to make the client.

My dumb conspiracy theory for SB is that they're actually remaking the client and game from the literal spaghetti code that is ARR, and 5.0 will be the release of it. That's why SB is going to be a longer expansion (to give them more time to develop the client), why that despite the budget supposedly being the highest for XIV, everything feels a lot more cheaper compared to both ARR and HW, and why we're now getting less content compared to both ARR and HW.

The official explanation is that they would have to implement the personal story for a new race... But combat tonics that transform you into a bear warrior or an undead exist, so ANet just can't be bothered with the tengu.

Minmaxing will always be a part of MMO even if the difference is minimal.
Imagine if X race made the best warriors.
Imagine if warriors were top tier and must pick in every dungeon.
Imagine if they had to balance taking into account racial stats as well as class stats.
Now imagine if racial stats didn't matter much to the point of not mattering for balance's sake, like FFXIV does it.

Champions Online did this and did it beautifully. You could pretty much create anything from your typical superhero or an anthro or a robot or anything. It a shame no one else does this.
