Why did this need to be remade from the ground up, is it because there's only so much you can do with PS2 era assets?

so we could play it again
But I can still play the other two versions.
Its actually running on the same code of the original game. They only remade the graphics and lighting from the ground up. They also modifed the controls to be less awkward and added a few extras here and there. But aside from a better framerate it plays pretty much exactly like the original. You can even change the controls back to how they were in the original if you want too.
the game is breathtaking and was way ahead of its time. Leaving it with ps2-era graphics/mechanics doesn't give the game justice.
Then they should have waited for the PS4 to come out before they made it.
The whole frame rate thing needed work.
Then why don't all remasters look this good, time and money?

Doubtful, for one the camera is totally different
Its easy to make an empty world look good

Then why did Digital Foundry say it was remade from the ground up?
remaking the game with a bland and generic art style doesn't do the game justice.
Game looks pretty, photo mode is good for taking backround pictures
Very tempted to play it again on the Night Filter
Because they're not PS2 assets, like REmake
Looks great
Because Sony knew their 2018 line-up was going to be really weak so they quickly put together a half-assed remake of a beloved game in hopes that it would make them look slightly better
It looks fucking terrible. The stonework on the colossus looks like it was glued on rather than something that is a part of their body and the animations are janky as hell
Shadow of the Colossus's aesthetics were built around the visual quirks of the PS2.
