It's so easy and bland, after having a run with every major nation and then some smaller states it just becomes boring.
The focus trees are just prime time jewery.

Is it actually easy, or just easier to play (read: streamlined)?

I haven't really done any GS at all. If it's so easy could HoI4 be recommended to someone new to this genre?

Easier to play and easy because of less depth.

It's a good introduction to GS, but I would recommend EU4 because of the combat.

Unlike the piano or chess where you need to invest 1000s of hours into it just to be competent, you understand every single game after 1-5 hours of playing and master it after 10-20.

Fun game

I just started it 5 days ago. After watching like 3-4 guide videos you will understand even the more complex mechanics (mainly relocation of troops, complex battleorders, creation of new wings/fleets etc.). The rest is fairly self explanatory.
Its definetly fun after you understand it all.
