I pre-ordered mine. There's a controversy now about them switching back to the Z8700 chip from the Z8750 before it's shipped out due to either supply issues/bad drivers/not waking from sleep depending on who you talk to. It's not that big a deal except for a bug with alpha blending in the 8700 which can affect games. It's funny because most US users don't really care, but the Chinese users who ordered at JD.com are going apeshit and calling the developers dirty dogs.
Eli Murphy
Honestly I would get a 9 or 10 inch netbook instead. It's marginally bigger, but somewhere around 8-10 inches (depending on the size of your hands/fingers) is the absolute limit of whether you can touch-type efficiently on a keyboard. To me 7 inches is hopeless, with 10 inches I can hit 100WPM. Some people may be able to touch-type on an 8 inch laptop keyboard, but 5.5 inches? Not a chance.
Aaron Thomas
The main point of that device is to play windows games and emulators though with the built in controller. The keyboard is really just secondary. It's for autists like me that have dreamed about having morrowind on the go. I'd use my phone for shitpposting before I'd use a GPD WIN.
Jeremiah Martin
And? The title of the thread is >Comfy shitposting devices I don't give a shit about your gaming. Shitposting requires touch-typing

I repaired a free broken 256gb 2012 mac air for 40 dollars by replacing the magsafe board and charger,

Tyler Butler
It's only cool if it's some special snowflake borderline useless Sony Vaio that was only ever released in Japan.
Blake Green
Meh, its interesting only if its possible to boot GNU/Linux distros
Nathaniel Peterson
5.5" might be small enough for thumb-typing, which would make it better than a phone because physical buttons. But I don't really know because I'm not getting one.
Brayden Watson
Ikr. If it's new, it sucks. Story of Cred Forums.
Adam Taylor
this desy
Alexander Morris
Would consider one, but saw preorders already avaliable for a x86 handheld with 8GB onboard. I'd wait a year/two, if they keep making them better/give them a docking port+dock, I will certainly consider. Also, those should be going for 100$, not the price it is now.
Lincoln Watson
Chinkpad X200s
Cheap, reliable, fast and upgradable. It's comfy as fuck. I'm posting on a T400 because I'm a bit too big for a X200 (but it's cute so I bought a few)
Jackson Sanchez
It's cheap creaky fucking chink shit. At least pretend like you have a paycheck and get the superior pyra.
Caleb Hall
Comfy masterrace coming through

Oh man has anyone actually watched that youtube video in OP it's like a cheap acer walmart laptop from 2007 god fucking damn
Asher Powell
>GTA 5 in my pocket Damn, I might buy this thing after all.

I'm waiting to see if it will have any problems running linux, it is sure to boot it no problem since it uses a standard laptop bios but I want to see if the mouse/xinput/dinput switch will work or if there are problems with the wi-fi implementation. If those problems are absent/solvable I'll buy it, otherwise i'll probably go for the pyra.
Austin Bailey
Anyone here have a Pyra? They look pretty cool.

I've got the Verizon version. As far as I can tell there's no custom ROM support, can't even get it rooted.

Can the pandora still be bought ?Or is there any other good umpc running GNU+Linux ?
Oliver Evans
>Can the pandora still be bought Yes, it's around 100€ on ebay. The Pyra will be out by the end of this year for around 600€.
Luis Brown
Don't try to get a pandora, it's turbo old. Wait for pyra, it'll be fantastic.

Nicholas Jenkins
That is a Sony VAIO PCG-GT3/K and that piece is a camera system which you can take pics or video from it.
Parker Butler
sorry for the double post, my internet is laggy as hell...
Andrew Price
whats the point of this little shit? to use a desktop os on a portable device? wangblows is only good for gayms and photoshop.

neat
Oliver Garcia
I was going to get one but decided against it since I only really wanted it to play rpgmaker games and emulators. Might still get one if it or a clone goes below 250.
Christian Walker
the zipit is shit in literally every way - shit keyboard, shit durability, shit processor, shit display sure, it's cheap, but you'll still regret whatever you spent on it
Jackson Williams
Oh okay thanks for telling me, then do you know any portable device running GNU+Linux without major flaws ? Preferably not too expensive and easy to acquire. It seems to be a pain in the ass to find a correct handheld device, smartphones are jails, game consoles are too and netbooks are shit and still too big compared to stuff like the nanonote or the zipit and pyra/pandora...
Lucas Morgan
I wish I knew - I have the same criteria for such a device and the best I've found is smartphone+Termux, sadly.
Grayson Reyes
you want the fucking pyra man read the thread jfc nice things are expensive.
Hunter Perry
Anyone remember these? I guess they were pretty shit, but I always liked the aesthetic.
Nathaniel Wright
What was shit about them?
Noah Bailey
Vaio P's next on my list, probably going to replace with it. I like the UX more but the P's more pocketable.
Jose Roberts
I guess I just expect to much. I never had one, but a 2ghz atom processor and 2gig of RAM(soldered to the mobo) seems kind of underwhelming. I know I'm a huge faggot, but I just always fantasized about about making a vaio p into a nice little kali-book that fits in your left back pocket.
Dylan Torres
Lack of a touchpad/good pointer support irrelevant since you'll be doing mostly terminal work anyway, l33t h4x0r aesthetic. please guys somebody shoot me down before my unhealthy obsession with these things returns from beyond the hardware obsolescence grave!
Ian Perez
Someone please post that vaio p pantsu advertisement, I can't find it

Im thinking of building one of these.
Owen Wright
I want one of these but they cost 200 USD and up
Lincoln Morris
Useless. Seriously, even for ARM, a Pandora or N900 would be better.
Camden Collins
I would have built one, but all the keyboards available at that size are complete shit. Also that sort of thing really needs a trackpoint or something instead of a touchscreen
Gabriel Torres
That is the Toshiba Libretto W105. Basically, a UMPC with touch screen on both side for either typing or suffering the web. Own it and will say it might not be the great item to get as it have some minor issue with it mostly how it was design. The battery is rubbish in that you can use it under 2 hours in light use or 1hr and 20 min in realistic use. The fan is on no matter what and you can hear it trying to cool this UMPC down. This get loud when you try to push it to it`s limited.
An interesting tool which isn`t useful to be use. Kinda funny as this is the last laptop under Libretto brand which is kinda a nice fitting on trying to show how much they can cramp into a small size laptop. Just suck it didn`t really work well in real life.
Joshua Hill
one fh these would be cool so i can have a linux box to carry around with me were i go. maybe even do some script kiddy cracking

Hunter Sanders
Don't buy it if you're not interested or can't afford it.
Justin Anderson
Sadly that atom isn't much more powerful, but hey, it's something. I could live with ARM but not the underpowered piece of shit that the pyra is going to have.
Blake Moore
I'm interested as fuck and $300 is not that much to pay but it's definitely more than any atom-chip device is actually worth.
Aiden Parker
Is that a game cube wavebird receiver on your monitor?
Parker Reed
>but it's definitely more than any atom-chip device is actually worth Mass produce your own then.
Jason Wright
>Sadly that atom isn't much more powerful Actually it is. That's a fucking Z8750 with active cooling, 4 x86 airmont cores @ up to 2.56 GHz. It should be at least 4X as powerful as the dual core angry birds processor on the pandora.
Jordan Cooper
>on your monitor? That's a GC controller hub, what's so weird about the fact that a GC controller is connected to it?
Jonathan Turner
It was for right? Cause I totally agree.
Andrew Hernandez
Well it sure is faster than the pyra SoC (it's a piece of shit to be honest), but it only score around 1.1k on geek bench and 3.7k on the multiscore. That's about as powerful as a Snapdragon 810 is and even that would trash it in the multiscore.
I don't expect them to pu snapdragon 820 in their systems but I wonder why they at least don't go for mediatek. They have some decent chips these days.
Noah Adams
just didn't expect to see one of those randomly.

these things are so stupid. Why not just use a smartphone that can do everything these things can but with an interface designed for the form-factor? They have much higher resolutions, better touchscreens, customisable keyboards, millions of apps including terminal emulators, game emulators, Cred Forums browsers etc. Much more powerful and faster. Smaller, lighter, don't look like a 90s weaboo.
If you need a bigger screen and/or keyboard get an x-series thinkpad to supplement your smartphone.
Honestly give me ONE single advantage these things have over smartphones. Just ONE. And don't say physical keyboard - they always feel like shit, on-screen keyboards are better.
Bentley Kelly
>trying to play my 1000+ game steam library on a phone
Leo Edwards
1000 games? really? you play over 1000 games on one of these things? What are its specs and screen resolution?
Also there are apps that can do game streaming to android.
Daniel Cooper
You have over 1000 games on your Steam library? Why? Have you really finished them all?
Logan Bailey
>Honestly give me ONE single advantage these things have over smartphones.
Actual buttons, large screen size, and x86. Whether anybody likes it or not (I don't), a lot of software is bound to x86 still.
>>they always feel like shit, on-screen keyboards are better.
RIght, that's why we have all moved over to touch screen keyboards on desktops.
Benjamin Stewart
>large screen size most of these have smaller screens than modern smart phones, and lower res. Anything bigger than around 7 inches is crossing into netbook territory.
>x86 What x86 programs does anyone need to have available in their pocket at all times? Word processing, CAD software, photo/video editing, IDE use would all be horrible on a device of this size. Most of the pictures in this thread are just people shitposting on Cred Forums anyway.
and by "they always feel like shit" I'm referring to the crappy low-travel "bubble" keys found on most of these handhelds. I don't know the proper name for them, sorry. Obviously mechanical switches and even rubber domes feel much better but these devices don't have them.
Gabriel Walker
oh yeah forgot to mention, word processing, CAD, photo/video editing, IDE - smartphones can do all these things too. Probably no worse than a 5 inch handheld can.
John Bennett
>Word processing, CAD software, photo/video editing, IDE I'd like all of those desu, remember that people used to do all of this on 800x600 with no problem.
Ryder Brooks
Mine arrives next week, it should be fun.
Eli Flores
>and by "they always feel like shit" I'm referring to the crappy low-travel "bubble" keys found on most of these handhelds.

this old sony vaio vgn-t3hp is pretty comfy I usually use it for irc and discord, has a pretty alright battery life of about 6 hours, 11.1" 1366x768 w/ 1.5gb with a 1ghz centrino is enough for crux linux easily, it can handle x okay too, only downside is when it gets hot (which only happens in x using firefox) the fans scream their bollocks off, only weighs about 1kg too

Would it be possible for someone with a very, very basic understanding of electronics to pick up the skills required to make a small, totally custom laptop within 2-3 months?
I know I can handle the fabrication and soldering, but I don't know much when it comes to digital circuitry.
The idea I have in mind is a ~7" sized palmtop with a 1080p tablet screen, 2 or more hours of battery life, and hardware capable of running some older games on low settings, like EVE Online or any Source game.
I wouldn't care if it's 30mm thick, as long as it does the job.
Could I jam some kind of sub-mITX motherboard into a form factor and use a downclocked desktop CPU, or something?
Jace Jenkins
To run source games at non-potato framerates and settings you'd need a Core M3, so that will cost you dearly and won't come with a 7'' screen. You could probably mod a chink tablet otherwise.
Elijah Johnson
Do you poo in loo
David Butler
Let's say I want to stuff a small (maybe MXM size?) yet relatively powerful GPU into it that only switches on when needed; if I'm gaming on it then I wouldn't have it running on battery, so power usage there wouldn't be an issue. Would a less powerful CPU be able to handle games then? One of the quad core Atoms, maybe.
Asher Collins
Try with a external gpu, probably would work
Jaxon Diaz
Blackberry Priv is pretty good, user. Even though I'd prefer a landscape sliding keyboard, the portrait sliding keyboard isn't too bad either for my tiny thumbs

shhhhhhh just research how impossible that is.
best you could do is adapt a newer tiny ass macbook motherboard

No that'd be 1440x1050. If it has to be widescreen, 1280x800 or 2560x1600 at 200% scaling.
>you're not allowed to name the main advantage because I don't like it Well I don't like touchscreens, they always feel like shit. Physical keyboard with a real OS.
James Lewis
Yup, it's for testing out the Dolphin emulator on my desktop PC. Did work but need to reinstall it as I got myself those multi-USB port which I need for what I am doing.
Try it out when it came out in North America. It was interesting UMPC but typing will get tired after a while (small keyboard and big hand). Also, not as great as people try to make it to be. With the current OS they use at the time, it's slow. You can try to put in a very light Linux OS to make it more snapper but with what it come with it, it isn't as great and I think the earlier model have issue with the motherboard. Never own in it but read about the issue from those UMPC forum in the time. Still, Sony do make some interesting tech for the time.....just not as useful for normal usage even at the time.
Well...you can try if you can find it cheap. Also, it's a touch screen keyboard which doesn't sound bad on paper as we're using them now on tablet and phone but the one I got don't give you feedback for some reason. I think they should have a button which is turn off and I need to find it to turn on. Still, the other issue I have with it kinda put me off a bit. Might go back to do some more work on it when I have some spare time.
*High Five back* Very good mouse when I use it on my desktop (and have some minor issue with my hand after years of typing and editing work). Just wish they is a good one which is wireless and isn't cheap quality.
Sony VGN-UX Series. They're few version but that info should give you a starting point to found out more about this tech.
Why would I need to jack off using old tech when I can get a cheap Moto G (1st gen) with the micro SD slot to watch porn?

it's also like an inch thick, has a resistive touchscreen, and is 600 USD. the Win can play PC games, which is nice if you want to play some older games or all of the Humble Bundle games you never touched (and for the non-gamer evangelists if you're buying these devices with super prominent gaming controls just to play sysadmin then you're a m o r o n).

Is it worth the carpel tunnel?
Oliver Powell
It's a 5.5" Windows touch laptop with a game controller built in, 4GB of RAM, and right now they're using the best Atom chip available. Compare that to larger 10" tablets that have more room to work with like the Asus t100ha which costs the same and has a keyboard, but a weaker processor and no game controller, or to the Pyra which has worse hardware and costs twice as much even in its base configuration that only has 2GB of RAM. Shrinking tech costs money, Windows costs money, extra hardware costs money.
The fact that it's going to retail for $500 tells you what GPD is really working with, and the fact that the preorder was only $300 is a boon to those interested in this kind of thing. My hope is that this is the first real step for PC to finally conquer the market that has eluded it for over 25 years: handheld gaming.

Sooo.. according to ''EvilDragon'' (the guy who created the Pandora and Pyra) the GDP Win has an open bootloader, so you will be able to install Linux but there is barely any support for Cherrytrail CPUs because 90% of the devices using it have closed bootloaders and are stuck on either Windows 10 or Android. At least it's getting a little bit more interesting.

Remember user to put your working laptop on a flat surface... Using your laptop on bedsheets or other material might block the air flow and result in overheating. This might cause GPU and/or CPU failure.

An AMD c60 can. But the cpu is so slow that trying to install something brings tears to your eyes. Had a cheap shitty acer 522ck. It was surprisingly good for the money but still had all the know "netbook problems".

I think it'd be pretty cool if you were able to, say, pack most of the electronics into the keyboard part of a laptop, with the screen having a decent sized battery in it as well.
When connected they'd use a physical port to transmit data and power, but if you split the screen from the base, you could keep a short range wireless connection to it, allowing you to place it somewhere more convenient (like a stand or a wall mount), or even set it aside while you're connected to a bigger screen.
