That one reason you don't entirely use Linux

Why do you still have a windows partition/virtual machine? For me I have a windows 7 virtual machine to sync my ipod nano, once it dies i'll switch to a less shit mp3 player I will have no reasons to still use windows.

Linux is not an option

Muh gaymes.
It's the only thing I've been using windows for in the past 8 years or so.

Sometimes I wanna play video games on windows that aren't on linux and I'd rather not fuck around with wine. Not even alot of the time, but sometimes.
I guess its also if I wanna use photoshop at some point, since it really is nicer for image editing than GIMP.

Haven't felt the need to use windows in years, however i do have a gpu passed through to a vm for the occasional game

-been using windows for 20 years
-adobe/3d tools/industry standard art tools
>visual studio
>countless software that are win-only(100+)
>100% compatibility with everything
>no driver hassle

the only thing i'd be able to do on linux is use the internet and terminal.

i use osx which has better industry standard tools imo
you could use free software for stuff on linux like i used to, there is some nice free software.
i prefer to keep linux server side nowadays, however i could manage using linux for work and stuff

I don't even use linux outside of work because it can't do the only thing a OS is supposed to do. Run the software i want.

>linux
So glad I never fell for that meme

is the software shitty games?
go outside you fat nerd

- Muh gaymes, for starters (I'm probably gonna go with GPU Passthrough later this winter)
- Mediamonkey AutoSync for android. How come filling a goddamn device with random songs from your media library is not a feature on every player worth their salt? I still haven't tested it under Wine, but as far as I recall it doesn't work properly.
Adobe, kind of. GIMP could actually be better suited for me once I learn how to use it properly, but for now I still depend on PS.

>Lincucks telling other people to go outside

That's rich.

school

I only boot windows to "play" CM3D2

ableton live isn't on linux and i'm not gay enough to get a macbook.

All the software I want to use is already on Linux. I like the Linux terminal, The GNU look and feel makes me comfy. In fact, there's Linux software that I wish I had on windows.

A few months ago, for my birthday, my brother bought us matching laptops with good hardware and windows 10 already installed, as I know nothing about hardware and my old computer literally exploded.
I've been too lazy to put Linux on it. I have an arch Linux craptop from 2003 on my desk, and I use Windows 10 anniversary bash shell to ssh into my arch.

I love being a sysadmin, I like solving the problems that come up on my other computer, making workarounds makes me feel smart; but as my self esteem has risen and my depression got better, I've found that windows is "good enough"

Also muh games.
(The only game I play is CSGO though, which has native Linux support)

I use linux 95% of the time, have win7 dualboot just for a few games and when I really get bored of them I'll just delete windows. I have a VM on linux I use if I need windows for anything else.

Doesn't have the software I use.

I still use win7, that has been optimized with the Cred Forums guide and some registry stuff, for muh gaymes that can't run in wine. Otherwise I run shit like Touhou in wine and it looks beautiful.

I dont, I have two different machines, one runs windows the other one linux. Not having two pcs/laptop in [current year] is retarded.

I keep win7 on virtual machine. Last time I needed it to unlock my xiomeme phone

Visual Studio and that one new game that's actually worth playing each year

Yet to find another IDE that has autocomplete and hinting that works as well as VS' does for C++, never mind the other features. Tried CLion and it couldn't even go to definition correctly, and doesn't have peek definition at all.

I used to use Vim but I had to install a boat load of plugins to get it near where I wanted it and it was still subpar compared to just using a Vim emulation plugin for VS instead.

I've got a Windows partition in case there are any games I want to play that don't work under Linux. However I barely play games these days, and haven't booted into Windows for over a year.

Also work gave me a MacBook Pro to use. I don't like OSX much, but it does run Office (I don't like that much either, but some of my collaborators don't use LaTeX, and are above me in the hierarchy, so I'm stuck with it).

because linux cant run half the shit i play, also directx12. I have a separate laptop with ubuntu that I use for anything not gaymen related, and a dedicated steam box with windows 10 for everything gaymen relating

>MS Office
>80% of my steam library
>Good drivers
>Proper audio
>etc, etc

Linux is a big meme OS

I've got windows 10 on my desktop for games and photoshop.
On my school laptop I have windows 7 for office and onenote. I could probably live without ms office after I'm done with school, but until I stop playing vidya I'm gonna need a windows partition on my desktop.

Because my External GPU setup doesn't work.

muh gaymes, basically. I don't really play video games that much anymore, so I don't why I still have Windows on my desktop.

OSX came on my macbook and I don't know how to install linux on it

You can do it, user!

>external gpu setup
Ask your wifes son to have a look at it.

Im feeling that this was an attempt of a joke but I'm not getting it.

It also implies relationship with disgusting 3d females so I'm even more confused, please explain in detail.

Networking student here. The only reason I'm still using Windows on my desktop is because of classes, desu. Many of my assignments are required by my teachers to use specific programs that only work on Windows.

I have a ThinkPad T-410 that I've been experimenting with and getting used to different distros. Big fan of GNU/Linux thus far. Aside from my install bricking my HDD (that's what I get for buying a ThinkPad on eBay), everything has been smooth sailing. I only play DotA 2 and Dark Souls, so games aren't a big issue for me until I want to play Overwatch.

>2d
My apologies, I misunderstood. You could ask your 2d waifus son for advice.

That's better.

I have Linux on my HTPC, on my Laptop, but my main desktop i'm still sticking to windows thanks to game support.

Valve needs incentives to put games on linux, like, maybe they only take 20% instead of the usual 30%

I have it for multi-platform development, i must test my programs to work on windows and mac too. For my personal usage i don't use windows anymore, i'm much more happy on linux, when possible i try to support developers with a multi-platform approach because the windows lock-in doesn't benefits me in any way.

>That one reason you don't entirely use Linux
temple os

But I don't. I have Wine installed for the occasional game, but that's it.

I don't
Yet i use OS X; it has all the proprietary software.

because yumi is the only not shit multiboot USB maker, and if I open it with wine it doesn't see my USB

> tfw I only interested in games that available for Linux (most of win-only gaems is stupid self-copying trash in fact)
> and don't need adobe/similar software although I can run it if I want with wine
> and get used to using free software for every practical purpose
> and haven't any unsolvable problems with that for almost two years of active usage
But i just afraid to lose something important in case if I'll get rid of windows entirely. So I keep it on separate PC. Don't know why.

Sounda about right

t. super tux kart pro

Because I've always used Windows, and I don't have any reason to switch.

some lab software that only runs on winshit

WHY

I have a 7 partition on one machine mainly for usable multimonitor RDP for work and some light gaming.

t. tux racer

deep sound + cain and able.

How stable is doing that?

I still use Windows because I'm too retarded for GNU/+Linux.

I had a course where we had to make 3d models in inventor, so I fired up a wm with the license on the back of my laptop.
Why is nobody ever talking about how much of a hassle windows is?
1. getting the official iso is a hassle, especially windows 7 (what I had license for) since it is not officially sold anymore.
2. stuff like running the windows updates takes a lot of resources and takes a lot of time.
I am not talking about third party software, just the software from microsoft, why have they not solved this yet? From the time it took to the amount of updates it looked like they were making me fetch each commit to their repo, compile and then fetch the next revision until I was up to the current branch.
I know this is not what they are actually doing, but it is really slow and you can't use the machine for anything else while this goes on.
3. The system is more bloated than kde and offers less features than mate.
I know that most people who use windows only have a single application open per physical screen, but it is damn near impossible to use.

>all free games are crap
You must be fun at parties.

I built a new computer to get rid of my old toaster that used to run Arch but this one kind of spergs with the CPU + Mobo combo or something.
Since I've tried almost everything and haven't found any solution, I just went back to Win7 with Cygwin.
I'll probably fuck around with installing Linux again another time. Win7 is tolerable enough for now.

I have a whole computer with windows on it. Then there's my everyday work computr with ubuntu on it

My macbook air is great. I have a windows pc for gayming. I see no personal reason to linux except self-masturbating to my own technology obsession.

Because I'm too lazy to wipe it and/or install something else. It's on a separate HDD and I haven't booted into it in months, I just store files there now.

I haven't used windows in years. I might get a bootleg copy of wangblows 10 at some point in the future though for video games, but I haven't really felt the need to play any new games and all the ones I've played the last few years have worked fine under linux natively/hacked executables/wine/dosbox.

id happily put it on a web server and shove it in a corner and never touch it. linux is great when it doesn't need to interact with a human, but fuck a linux desktop.

I couldn't find how to filter background sounds on my microphone. Skype is really outdated, can't change the audio source on Skype, seems to just use default.

Linux on the laptop windows on the PC works for me.

Video editing.

And also college-specific software that only runs on Windows and that I would rather not spend hours of my homework time trying to find a Linux alternative.

As soon as I am done with those two, goodbye Windows.

Windows 10 was free and works, literally

I've pretty much given up on vidya now, which is the only reason I still use Windows, I just haven't gotten around to switching over yet. I also feel a little uneasy about blowing away an HD with almost a TB of games.

GPU Passthrough isn't working for me and can't figure it out so the only way to use Illustrator or play Overwatch is to Dual Boot.

I haven't used Windows in five years but I don't use Linux exclusively because pf is nicer than iptables.

>nothing works out of the box
It's not 2003 anymore, user.

StarCraft 2 and Dirt 3. Literally those two are the only reasons I still have a Windows laptop. All the games I buy these days have a Linux version, all the software I use is available on Linux, all the software I write runs on Linux (duh).

I don't use Linux on my desktop computer because of video games, video editing, and Photoshop.
I don't use Linux on my laptop because after about a year of fiddling around with various WMs and DEs, I've found that Windows just suits my use case better here. I don't require any Windows specific software on my laptop, but on Linux there's always (for me) going to be something that isn't quite right or working how I want it, be it thumbnails, multi monitor support, various bugs in some DE, and what have you. There's always a compromise on usability in one way or another, and it especially becomes apparent if your monitor configuration changes frequently.
That's not to say that Windows isn't without compromises either, of course, but at least it works how I expect it to every time. I don't want to spend my time tinkering when I need my laptop to get shit done.

I do use Linux on my servers because it makes sense.

OP, can you not just put Rockbox firmware on it?

Games only. And the printer works better, too.
Other than that I don't use windows at all. If only I could play Overwatch natively on Linux, I wouldn't bother with Linux.

Linux fragmentation and multiple competing standards basically kill it for me.

If it all just worked together easily then I'd have all the software I ever needed but alas that is not to be

I have a dual-boot setup on my personal laptop.

> uni PCs only run Windows, forced to use MATLAB instead of GNU Octave for assignments
Usually end up writing them at home in Octave, then changing the few things that need to be changed for compatibility with MATLAB.

I could do without the games, and other than that I'd be perfectly happy just using Linux for personal use.
If my lab partner for some stupid reason insists on using M$ office instead of LibreOffice or LaTeX I'll offer that one of us is in charge of writing pure text and the other does the formatting etc.

Adobe products aren't available on Linux and they're my tools of the trade

>all your linux software is spread across 6 different gui toolkits that will look like inconsistent ass no matter how much time you spend ricing it
Windows is just as inconsistent, if you care about this sort of thing in the first place.
>dependency hell whenever you want a program that isn't in your package manager. It isn't hard to resolve, its just a massive waste of time.
"Massive waste of time" -- literally 10 minutes tops.
>shit battery life
Not true anymore and irrelevant on desktops / in the developed world where you can charge your craptop.
>shit video drivers
Have not had a single problem with my shitty obscure AMD card or any of the NVIDIA cards I ever used, unless I used the FOSS drivers. Proprietary alternatives work flawlessly.
>shit wifi drivers
Wrong.

RTFM and you won't have a problem with that.

"Everything"? "Have to"? And some people find them funny.
>cant plug my phone into it to copy over music and pictures
Werks for me :^)
>every program is a generic shitty knockoff version of the real thing
"Real thing". You mean the proprietary locked-down spyware whose entire budget was spent on market research, advertising and maybe some UI design, that is cobbled together by snippets of 30-year-old legacy code?
Plus it's a fucking program, I think it's a good thing if it's generic because it means it can do its fucking job without bullshitting around and has a generic UI (meaning that it has the features you'd expect, in places you'd expect) which makes it MORE usable than e.g. the ribbon bullshit in M$ programs from recent years.
>the dependency architecture is fucking stupid, god help you if you need a package that only has a 32 bit version
Recompile, done.

>no u
>werks for me
>never seen that

Not an argument.

If you don't play video games anymore, that TB of games isn't of much use to you, right?
You can always* re-download them, or back them up on optical media**.

* if the company doesn't go bankrupt and shuts down its servers, or arbitrarily decides to close your account
** but that's piracy and it's wrong, unless we're talking about games you bought on optical media in which case the HDD copy is redundant

Rebooting into the Win partition slightly annoys me too, because then I can't keep seeding my torrents or downloading things I want while playing. If neither is the case, what's so bad about rebooting? Takes no more than 30 seconds even on my shitty old laptop.

Provide specific examples for your claims then. What phone do you use that you can't just plug in and copy files onto? What programs did you try copypasting in where it didn't work?
Where did I say "no u"?

There's one small bug in MYOB under wine where it doesn't process clicks on the tab bar in Reports. Other than that program, I don't use Windows at all.

Well, I also suppose that wine is missing a few DIB functions, which the VIPER games use. But those aren't necessary so who cares.

forgot pic

but I use it, im in a robotics course and as a programmer for it we use Linux and do all the programming on Linux, all the other stuff is done on Windows like CAD software, Photoshop etc.

Games.

I like to play old games and new games.

Linux honestly the only REAL reason why I haven't moved away from Windows 10 is DX12 and compatibility with every single game ever made for the PC.

Nothing as I don't play games.

The fact that Windows 7 already does everything I want it to

Linux gaymez on steam are super expensive.

It's Street Fighter 5 for me, which is infuriating, because they promised a Linux port.

>What is VGA-Passthrough

What Problems do you have with GPU Passthrough?

e-banking.

:(

my loli / trap eroge wont work as well on Wine

Well, I'm used to it. I have Debian with Mate, it's kinda good, need to fix some widgets, but GUIs for Linux aren't as good as Windows GUI. Linux on a desktop is like a shit 30 years old car: you should be ready to fix it at any moment, but you can be sure it doesn't have any tracking devices.

Linux isn't allowed to reinstall anytime.

Rust and Diablo III, performance reasons. I literally have nothing else on it, and i boot it few times a month, frequently enough for updates to piss me off every time.

or you can reinstall just the Linux root partition in 15~20 minutes and save alot of time. Depends whats broken though, usually just cleaning .conf files or knowing how the package manager works is enough.

>not having native support

why do i have to use a workaround to make my games run? shouldn't the superior OS be capable of running muh gaymes?

VGA passthrough only works on an OS designed for it from the ground up, the only one that comes to mind is ESXi, windows and linux will not do this but rather run vGPUs as a process on the card itself.

I have a small partition that I keep for "just in case" moment when I need it but luckily after being a NEET for few months I got a Linux related job and there is no need for Windows anymore.

Why the fuck would I ever consider using Linux

Games. Also, tried installing Ubuntu on my laptop, and it kept freezing each 10 minutes. Fuck that.

>That one reason you don't entirely worship the God-Emperor of Mankind

It's called HERESY.

Video games, and "it just werks." I have arch running on my desktop with a dual boot for a few things. (For example, solidworks) and also it gets really pissy with my USB ports.

I was going to try GPU passthrough but 8 GB of ram isn't really enough I realized, so I decided to kill the project dead in the water :( AMD-Vi is broken as fuck anyways

don't have a pc good enough to run a vm with passthrough

still have a vm for office just in case

linux doesn't break

or if it does it's something minor like a brightness key on certain laptops which eventually gets resolved

Didn't see your message until now. This is the problem: superuser.com/questions/1124721/iommu-not-initializing-properly-for-gpu-passthrough

Even my fucking Celeron supports passthrough, what kinda CPU do you have?

>Printer drivers only available on Windows and Mac

To be honest, when I first had to undust my printer and use it when I had already been running Linux for a while it struck me that there's no drivers, and I was like, the fuck do I do now? Then I installed cups and it magically worked.

> MS Paint

Have you tried Pinta, it's really almost as simple as MS Paint with just a couple of extra features. I found it to be a nice alternative.

Can't really say anything about resuming because I never hibernate my desktop and obviously I've no answer to Photoshop if you don't consider GIMP viable.

Forgot to attach Pinta screenshot.

It just feels like theres always something not quite right

Like with Chrome iirc you couldnt use M3 to bring up the scroll via mouse function.

Plus I like games and the few I play arent available unless I use wine which is a headache to do. Theres just always something about GNU/Linux that ends up bugging me whereas Windows 7 really does just sort of work.

Plus I am yet to see a GUI that doesn't look like a knock-off of 5 year old OS X or some bullshit super leet haxor tiny text futuristic techno font shit.

Games and work. All software I use for work (including Origin and Solidworks) works under Windows, only few works under Wine and not perfectly fine.

I had Mint installed on my PC at work for some time, as experiment. In the end, I was starting Windows instead to actually do my work.

Linux is fun to rice, but in the end, the only thing I could use it for, was browsing the net.
