DEAD/DEPRECATED/OBSOLETE TECH THREAD

Let's get it going Cred Forumsents... show me tech, ports etc that are dead.

I'll start.

If your computer has this port, you should just chuck it and get a new one. 10+ year old computers are no fun.

> 5 rupees have been deposited to your Apple Wallet Rajesh

...

Remember this one?

I have a 1 year old laptop with a VGA port.

The most awesome port for video ever made. Period.

this one was great but was obsoleted too quickly

2016 mobos still have it though. GPUs not but mobos do. Not a dead port.

Also shit OP thread, one phone refuses to use it and now it's "dead"

My Dell from 2013 has one.

...

This port was popular for like 6 months before all manufacturers moved to the smaller one. I'm still stuck with a camera that uses this shit. Cables are impossible to find in stores and online they're like $10. Ridiculous.

...

that shit port is still popular with printers because they're hard to find so all those jews at Best Buy can sell you a 50cent cable for $20.

at least i hope it is

Anyone seen this one from few years ago? It's when ThnikPad chinks tried to jew their suckers (I mean, their customers) out of even more shekels by using a shit port on a tablet.

Rot in hell

...

nahh, that one still has legs. It's digital so it's not as shit as VGA.

Does your mobo still come with a PS/2 port for keyboard? If it does, just fucking trash it.

That looks like a regular Micro USB 3.0 to me.
It's fully backwards compatible to Micro USB 2.0.

what kinda connector u want senpai

...

PS/2 is better than USB.

Nigger $200 motherboards still come with a ps2 for keyboards

What happened to this one?

>PS/2 port for keyboard
Mine does, it's a Intel, it's from 2016, it probably cost more than you'reare entire build.
Also, polling vs interrupting.

These are still relevant

This old thing is almost deprecated

>>>/csg/

relevant when you have the usb adapter for it

Just move on already.

If your computer has any of these, it's time to upgrade that 10 year old chunk of shit.

Parallel port

Modern motherboards still ship with a least a keyboard port.

>Parallel port
Lenovo still sells laptops with that port. LMAO

Shill

>Modern
>PS/2
pick one and only one

no they don't

t. cisco shill

anyone remember these?

>one phone refuses to use it and now it's "dead"
Of the most innovative company known for setting the standards :^)

Face it, by 2019 at most it will literally be phased out.

These are the only items in this thread that are officially considered legacy, though parallel ports are still used for some specialist applications.

I dont think Ive ever actually seen a person use eSATA for eSATA.
It's just a silly looking USB port to most people.

Replaced by USB 3.0.

Who will win between hdmi and displayport?

I'm so glad they're gone.

everyone follows apple. apple killed floppy, they killed dvd and now they killed 3.5mm. thye also killed flash but that wasn't a port...

it's dead jim.

hdmi won long ago

Pic related. Remember when sound cards were responsible for joysticks?

Oh u.

Remember with burning hatred. For a while in the 90s I used them for LAN because I was too much of a noob to buy and install ethernet cards.

It was fine for two people playing Doom and Age of Empires, but trash for file transfer.

Kek, I have a microphone using it. Such trash, and hard to spot the difference from a distance when digging through the cable box.

Trash.

Trash.

At least you never had to mess with these day to day.

We're running out of these shitty 32bit addresses. NATs are terrible.
IPv4 IS legacy.

If things are going very badly PS/2 is often the only way you're able to get an input device working.

PS/2 still polls before the interrupt.

Nice bait.

why is this shit still around? it's the shittiest connector ever conceived and it's fucking HUGE compared to what it does and what alternatives look like

>USB-B
>hard to find

Looks more like a joke to me.

cheap ones are impossible to find at brick&mortar stores. they're called "printer cables" by idiots at stores and they cost $5/foot.

I still need these for various scientific devices - some modern laser controllers still use them. Who knows why though.

I cut myself so many times on that shit since they're impossible to separate. And one time I managed to pull out one of the prongs.

Total GARBAGE.

What do you mean?

ebay.de/itm/Nach-Oben-90D-Usb-2-0-Typ-A-Stecker-Auf-Standard-Usb-B-Typ-Stecker-Kabel-ER-/112075422305?hash=item1a18373a61:g:GIEAAOSwPRlXmq3A

1,99€

>brick&mortar stores

Pants-on-head retarded. Buy it online.

>My Dell from 2013 has one.
Jesus... that's fucking sad.

>10+ year old computers are no fun.
Pentium III still browses the web perfectly faggot.

$25 actually.
It's funny because employee price is 10% above cost of manufacture, and it's like 35 cents.

not online you retard. and not on auction sites. I forgive you for misunderstanding since you're a kraut or a muhammed.

It's a parallel port. Why would you put extra circuitry in a scientific device when you already have a computer with multiple IO.

Then just don't buy in shit stores. My local store also has cables for 10€ and 4g thermal paste for even more

TY! Yeah, it's fucking ridiculous pricing.

Even at Walmart they sell for ~$20. So if you need one urgently and can't wait & buy it online, you're out of $20.... for overpaying for a $0.50 worth of cable.

Fucking nuts.

Ok then, this is a physical store. Same price.

x-kom.pl/p/248637-kabel-usb-shiru-do-drukarek-a-b-m-m-18m.html

...

>poland
why are you even trying, 3rd world shithole netizen? can't you find some pollack/krautchan board to shitpost to?

AGP

That's a "DVI" port from manufacturers who want to fuck you extra hard.

different user, but tech prices in poland are the same as in every other country, sadly

also, the only relevant polish imageboard is karachan, which is a shithole

>apple killed floppy,
no

Why are you starting calling people names? I'm just pointing out that there's no way that in a working economy you could sell a usb cable for 25 dollars.

You can't press more than like 3 buttons at once with PS/2.

Mah Cisco escape sequence (Ctrl+Shift+6+x) doesn't work with PS/2.

check these out... how many have you handled?

Wasn't this what those really high res IBM monitors used, too?

>when he doesn't buy cables online

>when he expects people to know that 'Best Buy' is not an online store

yes that sucks dick, but old keyboards are sturdier than the chinese gaymer crap

>when he buys at Best Buy instead of online and then gets mad when he misunderstands posts online

lol applefag detected ... kill yourself! do it! you know you want to!

retard

gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=5481#ov

...

...

This. Fucking normies and their tvs. Shame I never got to use a DP.

These connectors were already 20 years old when the first PC was built anyway.

I have tons of cards for these and only GPUs for PCIe

VGA is the best video port ever made simply because it was everywhere. Still used everywhere in the business world.

>only GPUs for PCIe
a consumer's perspective

I had a couple of external USB3/ESATA drives. Cheap controller died so it was ESATA from that point forward. Works fine and is quick enough for most stuff.

I have like five of those. Ordered them for $1 each from china (dx). Why haven't you?

13w3

Dont know how many times my onboard video has saved my ass

I wouldn't buy a TV without scart desu

I saw these shipped with a dual VGA adapter. I'm sure they do support digital, I've just never seen a monitor that uses it. HP used these for some time.

...

Nah, I just like buying older cards

Thank god SCSI is dead
What a pain in the ass

That's just VGA though
Yes, they support digital too. It basically acts like two completely separate DVI screens

Of course, do you remember these though?

welcome to Apple product stream.

>Of course, do you remember these though?
sloppy cable.
That's the A drive

It's called SAS and SATA now.

Poor bait

...

I wouldn't buy a motherboard without PS2

thats just the protocol

the nightmare of daisy chain cables, SCSI ID, and termination is over.

Firewire sire

Is this bait?

Not obsolete simply because Apple is run by retards.
VGA is obsolete but it is a legacy port.
Depends on what you use it for.
No.
No.
No.
Hilarious and original.
Legacy.
>maybe if you are a fucking Cred Forumsirgin
Yes.
Yes.
Are you daft?
Network Address Translation is for IPv6 as well
Legacy
Yes.
Yes.
You are literally retarded, sir.
Bait

>You are literally retarded, sir.
You know nothing about coding, sir.

>NAT for IPv6

How about no

If you buy a $2 arduino nano clone you're bound to get one of those cables with it.

>we'll just flip a few wires to fuck with you
what a shit cable

Do you even know PATA?

Because projectors are not commonly renovated, and thus a laptop might need it.

Most MIDI instruments with a USB port use this cable.

>Do you even know PATA?
nigga thats a floppy cable

I still use it since my PS3 controllers repurposed as PC gamepads need it.

Most external HDDs I have use this one.

What browser do you use? Asking for a pentium 4 shitbox I'm trying to repurpose.

>tfw s5
I like it, having both usb 3 speeds and micro compatibility is nice.

>headphones are obsolete
kek cry harder iCuckold

Nobody were using those things when apple removed them from their devices. The 3.5mm jack though has been the single most used audio interface for decades. Nice try, shill.

>i'm an expert because my first programming language was BASIC and BASIC is not OOP so it must be good.

...

>1,689 reviews
Why do people like wasting money?

god damn, what is happening to that kid?

His parents won't buy him the latest iProduct?

Are you fucking retarded? PS/2 is the port WITH N-key rollover. It's usb that has to poll fast and implement software to simulate NKRO.

Are you fucking regarded?

This

Its less circuitry in the device. Most CNCs are parallel too. They dedicate input pins to steppers and such. Same with laser magnometer. The software directly drives 4 pins positive or negative 1 each for direction and movement in 2 dimensions.

Picking on the analog port, poor form.

Literally first result mongoloid.
pcpartpicker.com/forums/topic/5351-nkro-and-ps2-vs-usb

Also wikipedia:
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PS/2_port#Legacy_port_status_and_USB

3rd fucking bullet.

Sometimes it nabs you still. I put new SAS drives in a server and it refused to boot. ID problem, new drive was fucking with OS drives ID. Still get that fugly "SCANNING BUS 0 ID 0 LUN 0" shit too.

>all these triggered poornigs

Anything apple stops using becomes obsolete immediately.

S video anyone?

goat tier

it's true they killed the warranty and customer service

Most, and have 4 of .5M 8088 cables on my desk.

Lets see... CX2/CX3/AX4/FAS940/FC/SAS3/6/12. Haven't worked with any of the NVMe backplanes yet though.

>butthurt murricans
SCART was god tier back in the day. You can't imagine how freeing it was to have every TV you come across support RGB.

Good riddance.

This port is way better than Micro USB. Sturdy as fuck. Meanwhile microusb ports seem to break constantly.

It's just MicroUSB with extra power pins. Pretty standard actually.

I got one worse for ya.

Molex -> SATA adapters.

I'm in IT and one of these in a server had somehow managed to fucking short itself and melted into a fucking hard drive.

The hard drive still worked somefuckinghow but it sure looked like ass and I had to basically cut the connector back out since it melted together with the hard drive's plastic

I looked it up and it seems to be a common occurence

NEVER GO MOLEX -> SATA

Don't forget about small as shit headers for motherboards.

>tfw my 990FX board has a PS2 port on it

Inb4 amd is obsolete anyway

Those ports are still around on almost all motherboards. They ain't on the back-plate but most have a motherboard header. And they are still useful for messing with routers (many have j-tag headers inside) and other things you may or may not want to mess with.

WORST
They should at least bundle them up

PS/2 is a hardware interrupt. It's more responsive than universal meme bus

>having to reboot your computer if you accidentally disconnect it

>Cables are impossible to find in stores

What the fuck are you doing?
I have dozens of cables for the superior mini-USB.
I can't seem to get a hold of micro-USB cables.
I've been meaning to order some out of China.

It's the best video connector.

You have it easy.

Business workstations and servers all use their own proprietary bundled front panel connections and they're all different. So you could be locked out of using a decent ATX power supply because only Dell's own special snowflake one for that specific old Precision will plug in and work properly. Damn bastards.

What's wrong with Molex?

TROLL OP

DO >>>>>>>>NOT

>digital

>gold plated

Superior command set. SAS and SATA are based on it.

You can convert HDMI to VGA easily.

>Blows capacitors due to CPU placement

BTX form factors are obsolete. Thankfully

BTX was obsolete when BTX was launched

anti rust and stronger, apparently.

although if your usb cables are rusting there is a problem afoot

For whatever reason, S-Video was the most unreliable junk of all time. Every time I ever tried to plug into a PC or a projector with it would just randomly stop working. Happened during a really important meeting once.

>Bait

So... Firewire is a currently used port? Or am I missing something

I have it and the monitor for it

still runs

...

Oh I know how that goes. It's an easy fix as long as you have a support contract with the vendor. I don't have to worry about it as much because government pays for all of that, but it's a pain in the ass to work with in a SOHO environment.

It would still be nice to have a single standard instead of that shit.Something like pre-pinned GPIO headers for the case.

Yeah, keep talking shit until Zen comes. Just wait, you'll see!

>this is said every series release
>nothing but disappointment and false advertising

I was just meming, but I think Zen will be pretty good, even my 8350 with 4.5GHz on stock voltage doesn't put out a shit ton of heat, and it's still decent.

where is this header user? I'm genuinely interested. would love to find a way to plug an old serial into my PC.

Dayyum. Didn't expect to see any ports I didn't know.

huh? you know these: ?

>those fucking things
I think that was my least favorite part of building my rig.

probably somewhere on your motherboard, probably nearby the usb and audio headers

This. I had to buy a back plate adapter with one on it and hooked it up to my motherboard. It was for programming a micro-controller. You can do it with USB too but it's not the same.

>tfw cracking open an old PS1 to see this shit for the first time
Just WHY my shit up fampai

no
no
no
yes
yes
no
yes
not yet
too young to know what that is
no
the fuck
hilarious post
yes

Walmart price matches you retard

...

These wouldn't be so bad if the (-) plugs were marked more clearly and/or were color-coded to the mobo universally.

HDMI is garbage
SD is garbage

VGA > HDMI
CF > SD

Floppy disk drives. Good old days of tech. :)

>headers are obsolete

lol youre the most retarded person on Cred Forums for today
congratulations you fucking idiot

>Walmart price matches you retard
not online offers you dumbfuck.

>having such a fucked up and messy setup you routinely disconnect your peripherals
not everyone is perfect but seriously if that's a problem for you clean your fucking desk holy shit

>VGA > HDMI
analog is shit.

because it's about as standard as they come, easy to produce, and you only have to deal with it once when assembling or upgrading and you never have to touch it again, so nobody gives a fuck but bikeshedding autists on imageboards

I never understood what the advantages of S video actually was. I could see how it beat component, but it never really felt all that better than basic Coaxial.

well if they just worked forever you'd never have to buy new ones would you?

Yes they do

Go to thrift stores. Shit varies from $0.25 to $0.50 on average.

I always see people bashing this connector on /vr/. What are its problems?

I've never seen a SCART connector in my life so I don't know what's wrong with it.

>type "poop" on the PS/2 keyboard to turn on computer so I don't have to crouch to reach the power button on the rig.

yeah no.

annoying cunt

You can wake on usb too.

girls

this fucking meme

...

is it dead?

Enterprise equipment that is not just a meme machine usually comes with legacy ports because people actually work on them instead of shitposting on Cred Forums all day.

...

I agree, verbose garbage.
Can't tell if bait or not for HDMI.

Pins get bent very easily

You can actually disconnect and xonnect it again when the computer is on and it will work. That was my experience, at least. It won't work if you plug something after post though.

Not true for me.

Still useful to some degree. Mostly installing Operating Systems for me in the past few years.

DVD-RW all day every day, get that weak R shit out of my house.

What modern computer can't boot from a USB drive?

Not when you nuke and boot bby. There aint no USB driver left in the mother fucker.

there was one thing they were good for.

the graphics card fan on my younger brother's computer went out once. without the money to buy a new card, i just cradled a case fan in the dvd drive cable and pointed it towards the card. as long as he didnt kick the computer or some shit, it was fine.

well, never go molex to sata, that is. sata requires 3.3 volts, which molex doesnt carry.

molex to, say, pcie, however, will work fine.

Still use one. Need it for a 15-channel logic analyzer built in to an old HP/Agilent Oscilloscope I own.

On a somewhat related note I think it has either a serial or parallel port on the back, I don't remember which off hand. I could probably try to hook it up to USB via a converter but I'd probably need some kind of software to actually do anything and lord only knows if it'd be compatible with modern 64-bit Windows.

Scope is an HP 54645D, pic related

Wait, what? How can DBAN affect the BIOS' ability to boot something?

Usually need randall or whatever the fuck that USB tool is called, and when I tried loading the OS after DBAN it didn't work.

Only DVDs worked.

As long as you unplugged the USB before using DBAN I don't see how that would happen.

What do you do, user?
Oscilloscope are fancy shit

I'm doing EE so it just made sense to get it. Both my scopes are decent general purpose scopes for signals under 50/100MHz. I've used them when breadboarding various projects and for troubleshooting as well. It's not too often I have to use the logic analyzer, usually just to double check timings and count sequences, mostly only used it for labs for my digital courses.

Scopes aren't very expensive if you're looking to get into it, well new ones are, but you can usually find vintage stuff for under $100. I got my Tek 2225 for $50 and the HP scope for $150 I think.

youtube.com/watch?v=TataDaUNEFc

...

fuck you, apple shill

I built my first home network with these.

Thank you for sharing your opinion on every fucking post

holy shit, these cables are fuckign dangerous!

Yes
Most professional audio interfaces still use them. If you want to build a studio you'll need a computer with firewire ports, and protools

>too young to know what that is
You should go there, without coming back.

How will I be able to config my routers and switches without it?

Came here for this, apple is finished.

I still have one ethernet-10base2 network card.
BNC is best blug.

BNC still popular for security cameras and high end stuff I think (like HDSDI or whatever they use in TV station cams I think, idk)

...

componet supported high def
so no

i dont get it. from your own pic the thumb drive is cheaper

Composite (RCA) had all video over one wire, S-Video separated luminance and chrominance (color and bright) so you got a better picture (technically, this was considered component since they were separated) True component just separated the color channels. Sadly, most TV's or devices were crap or did a half ass job so you couldn't tell a difference.

The S5 has this

I got one for free when I last ordered pc parts.

Search for a header with 9 pins and there's probably the word COM written next to it.

example

...

Holy fuck, I am mega retarded. I spent like 45 seconds looking at that thinking "Why the fuck is he pointing to literally nothing, and 2 pci-e slots?" before realizing it was an arrow.

Same here

True, professional cameras hooked to a live editing station still use that and quality is incredible, actually you can use 2 of them for things like 60fps 4k 4.4.4.
You can tell if a company is aiming to the prosumer market only and not even light pros if they just use an HDMI out for their cameras.

...

dubs-trips-dubs confirm apple is outdated garbage

same. confused the shit out of me.
