Mobile VR

What is the general consensus on mobile VR? I got a Merge headset today and so far I am really enjoying it. Do you guys have any recommended apps?

Do you see picking up in the future? I can definatelly see everyone having a mobile vr headset at one point in the next 5 years or so, while I would imagine its going to take a bit longer for something like the occulous or vive to take off.

I am generally a really nice guy, but the very first person that I see wearing this shit in public will end up in a hospital.

why?

Because people go to hospitals when they get hurt, dummy. Sheesh. What a stupid question.

My mom's husband who is a teacher told me that Google came to their school to demonstrate the technology for educational use.

I don't see the benefit now, but if Google already has schools in mind, I can see this kind of stuff being in every home by 2018

What kind of data is Google hoping to collect (and sell) from this?

Garbage. Mobile VR is garbage. This is not an exaggeration.

Only hope for VR is the real VR from the dedicated ones Occulus/Vive/etc

LOTS of untapped potential.

What it needs is a dedicated operating system. A version of Android made specifically for VR. Right now its a pain in the ass to need to remove the phone to switch apps, and the lack of official dedicated apps is astonishingly disappointing. The fact that I can't check my facebook, or even watch Netflix on it is fucking terrible.

>My mom's husband

damn thicc

THanks senpai

Its a shame that the best experience for it is the quick demo that comes with the base app

YOU'RE NOT MY DAD!

t-those legs

I'm about to cheat on my waifu

With a good headset they're fun.
Games are all universally shit, I'm working on a couple that work with basically any bluetooth controller so I think that's gonna be fun.
If you've got a good headset, and that can be a hard thing to get, then it'll be pleasant.
Other than that it's dead as of now.
I own a vive that I dev for but I'm still thoroughly interested in mobile VR, I see such a future there.

It works excellently except for headtracking, and headtracking is a stupid meme and the worst part of VR by far.

Just get TriDef, use mouselook, and enjoy a huge 3D screen without nausea. All "VR" eventually gives you nausea, and it ruins your fucking day.

I think it'll really take off once people start making programs to apply vr to real life spaces

Like QR stickers for walls that let you make the wall your calender. A list of whats in your fridge on your fridge, etc
Once it's marketability grows to reach non-techies we will move away from screens entirely

(Other than the ones an inch from our faces of course)

I've used vr pretty extensively and never had an issue.

Roller coasters fuck me up. Dont know why vr dosent

Day dream VR might kick off, even if its intrinsic tracking system is prone to drift.

Compared to ground up VR solutions on PC and console, mobile VR seems easier to put on and lay down or move around in as there is no cable. And the screen is easier to upgrade.

Tempting for people to use on long trips to watch shit in private during their daily commute but then you have assholes like so you have to be constantly on your guard. AR is far more suited for such an application since you get to maintain awareness of your surroundings.

However the freedom and mobility you gain with mobile VR is offset by low battery life, low computational capability, and poor tracking.

People would want to use their phones as well so constantly mounting/dismounting the damned thing on and off the HMD will be a hassle.

A dedicated all in one VR solution similar to what intel and AMD are developing would be far more practical and limited to home use. AR is far more suitable for public use.

It's a Commie Core scheme, friendo.

Well, cardboard is most successful VR headset, isn't it?

I love it, i even tried to make couple of little games (one of them is so conceptually decent that i'm considering finishing it and releasing on google play). But still, it's not even remotely as good as Rift. I had this thing on my head, rented it for couple days, that was entire different quality.

Cardboard is best thing that could happen to VR, it's $5 and it really shows basic concept of technology. If there would be standarized bluetooth controller and some kind of 6dof (even inaccurate, just to let someone peek out of the corner), it would probably be good enough to be proper "VR platform", with serious games and programs for it.

That's Hololens which is AR

They already make dedicated android VR headsets with everything built into the headset.

I never thought about this.

Do people actually stay 'faithful' to their waifu and consider masturbating over anything else as cheating?

In two years, every major android phone will have double cameras for 3d images
Augmented reality will reach

Didn't know that

At what price point do these Mobile VR headsets become worthwhile?

I can see very cheap Chinese models for 20-30 dollars, but they don't seem to be particularly long lasting or immersive

I have an El Cheapo plastic headset for Google cardboard apps, I use with my note 4.

Kinda fun every now and then, definitely worth the €20 I paid. Came with ain Bluetooth controller, which is a necessity for anything more than a virtual tour style app.

My top 3 games are:-
Quake VR
Hardcode
Sinister Edge

I haven't checked the app store for new things for a while, might get it out for a play this afternoon.

I occasionally take it to the pub to let people have a play. Even more fun knowing someone like you might attack them!

Nice dubs, btw

How do Rift/Vive compare to Gear VR?

Are they currently worth the investment?

Unsure if I should wait for gen 2 or not, though I'm not too sure what they would improve upon with gen 2. Resolution probably won't go up, seeing as that would take more computing power, they already have tracking and stuff, so I guess just better build quality? Better OS?

HAS ANYONE HERE SUCCESFULLY STREAMED VR FROM THEIR BEEFY DESKTOP TO A SMARTPHONE IN A CHEAP VR ADAPTER HEADSET ?

i did, racing sims. I combined tridef3d and trackir (with diodes on carboard) with nvidia streaming thingie, had relatively precise 6dof in result. It was laggy, even on cable, and latency was too high for racing vidya which requires precise and fast reactions.

Nevertheless, it looked amazing. I wouldn't use it as substitution for VR, but it sure works as demonstration of what proper Rift is capable of.

Let me say one more thing: from time to time, i'm wondering about buying 5" fullhd HDMI display from aliexpress. That would resolve latency problem, and then (after shitload of calibration) my cardboard trackir piece of shit could pretend to be proper VR headset, only with terrible lenses. Hell, i could even find some apo lenses, or try to adjust aberration in postprocessing.

Is good for porn. We need more teen vr porn.

The one I have is 60 and I can see it lasting a very long time. I also tried a 5 dollar one that honestly wasn't bad despite no strap. I think the price-quality curve is pretty even, so more or less just pay what you want. Just do some research on the specific one you are buying

Honestly I was going to get a vive, but my cardboard is high enough quality to hold me over until the second gen.

>Not sure what they would improve upon
There is plenty. Lack of wires, less complex head tracking etc

Someone please recomend me a theater app that doesn't have a drifting issue.

I can't find one that I'm totally comfortable with yet

Thanks VRBro. I knew latency would be be a bitch. But if it just works and look good i am going to give it a go. Cheers.

Get a GearVR if anything. Daydream will probably be equally as good whenever it comes out.

fpbp

I'll wait until the pioneers have made it acceptable to be used in a public environment. Then I'll watch muh anime and other embarrassing shit on my 5 hour train trips to work.

mobile VR is neat

but there is a massive lack of software, full stop
haven't touched my headsets (some $20 plastic enclosure for using cardboard apps with and a gear VR) in a while entirely because there's next to fucking nothing to do

Reach for the stats! Pioneer your own future!

Use it on public transport *today*, whilst dry-humping your waifu body pillow

crap

VR porn pretty much replaced 2D porn for me, desu

Is there any cool AR stuff?

I got one just for the obvious reasons. Impressive when it works but vr software for movies definitely needs work in the controller and playback department.

Having more than one waifu is looked down on at least, and I read something where someone wrote that he hadn't fapped to anyone else for X time.
So for some people it probably does.

Is it worth to get it for that? Been thinking about get one pretty much for that.

Honestly no. If you can find a cheap one for 5 bucks, maybe, but vr porn is super fucking barebones right now. Everything is POV with no variation. I'm personally waiting until we get some variety

It is if you like vanilla stuff and GFE, otherwise
is right

>Everything is POV
Well, to be fair what else?

Anybody try this? It seems kinda essential

Are there any more apps/demos similar to the one that came with the Cardboard app? The artstyle and tone was perfect imo. I loved the low-polly art style

Needs better drivers. Right now, the only mobile VR platform that can power a headset reliably is Gear VR. But that requires kernel level access that just isn't there anywhere else.
