If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", ultraportable

Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

Life is truly suffering

Where does a poor UK fag like me buy used Thinkpads, eBay is a bit sparse for T420s at the moment...

Anybody had similar issue to mine?
Tried to use the optic drive on my T420, pressed the button the optic drive's light blinked a few times then stopped.
I tried pressing it again but nothing happened.
So I've run eject -t cdrom
And I got this error
eject: CD-ROM tray close command failed: Input/output error
After that I pressed the button again and the tray opened.
I've tried burning a file the first try failed but that could be the CD-R fault.
And I could read data from different CDs.
What's causing it?

>no refurbed thinkpads on amazon with four stars or better
I bought my T400 on amazon from a refurb dealer a couple years ago, looks like all the good ones are gone now. Might as well ebay?

Depends how poor.

I just bought a refubished T430 for about 100 bongs on ebay. Similiar models on non-auctions start at about twice as much. I can see a bunch of x220 auctions which also look like they're going to sell for about 100-120.

So anons, where's the best place I could pick up a spare battery for my x200? It's a great little college work horse, but I want to keep a spare battery around just incase it dies and I can't get to an outlet.

>buying refurbed

> best guess for this image: porn athletes

Jeez 100, that's not bad at all.

Do you have any tips for getting a good deal? I guess always go for the auctions.

Bought a used x220i for 100 bongs including delivery

hope I don't get fucked over should be here tomorrow.

I have 8GB of ram and a 256GB SSD ready for it.

Anyone have experience doing a warranty claim with Shitovo? Care to share?

Here's my experience so far:

I filed a general fucking claim and they issued me a ticket with no info about the procedure.
Few days later they're saying they're going to send someone to my house to fix the laptop. What in the flying fuck? I don't care about someone coming to fix the laptop but they didn't even inform or give me a choice about this. Not only that, they expect me to commit a large time range of availability on a weekday to accommodate the technician. First time I heard of this style of warranty service.

That sounds like some weird chink behaviour

maybe they will spot your place while repairing to rob it later on in the week.

>i
immediately sell it for $150 + shipping and get a non i3 piece of shit

Yeah. Never expected anyone coming out. I suppose that is the fastest way to service for them. I thought they would just ship me a box or tell me to dump it somewhere and make it hassle free. How the fuck am I supposed to accommodate a time range of 9-5 on a fucking weekday? I have to take my dragon dildos off the ceiling as well.

will he get bettery battery with an i3?

Yes it has an original battery and charger so

what should I do?

I didn't really have money for anything else.

Not really other than general ebay advice.

It's a matter of patience, look around, do your research on whether you're going to get fucked over and Watch a few 7 day deals starting with 0.99, from what I've seen those long auctions usually sell for less than 3 or 1 day actions.

Also drop a higher bid in the last 5 seconds, something like current bid +20%, when you have a bunch of retards bidding like 1 pound every few seconds trying to outbid each other in the last minute. You're only going to pay what the last guy bid. Obviously bid within your limits in case someone else also does that.

no
i3's are the i5s that are too shitty to even turbo boost.
if you get a proper i5 machine, and enable power saving modes you will get a decent amount more battery life than an i3 with the same power savings.
but if you just put the computer on high performance mode and not care about battery saving then an i3 will probably last longer
sell it on /r/hardwareswap
they will buy anything with 8 gigs of ram or better for 20% + over ebay.
hell the other day I got a used x201 for $75, upgraded it from 6 to 8 gigs of ram, and sold it for $125 + $15 shipping

Ok hopefully there is some bongs then to buy it.

>if you get a proper i5 machine, and enable power saving modes you will get
Makes sense. Thank you.
>sell it on /r/hardwareswap
how do you trust them to not fuck you over without an official service and vice versa?
you're the only one that knows your needs. If you can sell at a profit and get something better I wouldn't waste the opportunity

Hey /tgp/ and /fglt/ bros, can anyone tell me how well a W520 or W530 plays out of the box with Ubuntu?

I've never been fucked over
just make sure they send you the money first, and take a LOT of pictures and you should be good
at worst offer it for $150 + shipping using the payment, then $100 + shipping gifted. They will usually lean towards the gifted since it's cheaper.
Then as soon as you get your money and confirm you didn't get a fake email then send it.

Well the main problem every ebay seller in the uk seems to be pajeets/ahmeds that can barely answer questions in English

one example

"does it come with uk mains charger and battery"

reply

"haha how can you see pictures if no battery"

This x220i I bought is the first seller who can reply back in at least understandable English.

perfect timing that you said this, i'm currently thinking about install ubuntu on my w520.
Any chance that you have experience with VMware workstation pro in ubuntu?
Also do you care about the dgpu? because I'd probably just turn it off to save power

Just get a T-series and save yourself a headache. Ubuntu works fine out of the box, but the discrete graphics are going to run like shit and you'll need to mess with bumblebee and all manner of hackneyed solutions to get Windows-like performance.

I recently swapped from a W510 to a T430 and it made a world of difference. Absolutely nothing to fuss with post-install on any distro aside from power management.

I feel sorry for anyone buying anything in the UK market. You have my sympathy.
interesting. Not like shitbay is any better for sellers anyway.

Is there a cheap Thinkpad that can outperform this $500, 4 year old HP? I want a thinkpad but I'm not sure how they spec out.

Easy, just get a t430 or t450. Skipp the 40 series because of shit track pads. In fact t450s should be reasonabley priced now

T420 with 1600x900 screen, add a quad core for maximum outperforming.

T420 would beat it at

Please spoonfeed me. I have no idea how to go about getting one of these yet they seem so perfect. Ebay?

>t450
They seem to still be more than twice as expensive as a T420 or T430. Can't see why anyone would pay that premium for what you get.

ebay
avoid refurbished, and if you don't know what you are doing avoid the ones missing parts

because you want something more modern?
the t420s dgpu is god awful nowadays, and the t430's isn't that much better.
you know you can easily swap the trackpad with one from a t450 right?

Yes.

Keep in mind that everything is easily upgradeable and replaceable so if you see one with an i3 or something or no/low amount of ram or no drives but it's cheap buy it anyway.

>t420 dgpu
The intel hd3000 is enough imo, you can even use it for madvr to watch 1080p 10bit cartoons on it without issues.

>but muh gaymen
why would you buy a thinkpad for gaymen in first place, even then you can plug an eGPU easily

This thing seems like it's better in every way.

ebay.com/itm/LENOVO-THINKPAD-T420s-14-LAPTOP-CORE-i7-2-80GHz-8GB-240gb-SSD-CLEAN-/222247430520?hash=item33befaa978:g:rHgAAOSwFV9X1bXc

soldered cpu and worse battery than the t420

I wouldn't pay any more than $300 for it
hell even $250 is kinda pushing what I'd pay
you can get a fully working t420 for $150 nowadays.
it's not just about gaymen, it's also about power consumption
On my t420 I loose 2 hours of battery just having the dgpu enabled, but not on.

Hey /tpg/, I bought my x220 around 8 months ago and have been using fedora on it.
but I am interesting in *BSD support for the x220.
the only hardware issue I can think of is the Intel 7260 wifi card I swaped into this.
thanks for any replies.

>the t420s dgpu is god awful nowadays, and the t430's isn't that much better
The T450 gpu is only marginally better than the T430 as well. T430 intel does everything short of gaming without a hitch. The supposed appeal of the later thinkpads was power savings but their battery life doesn't reflect that and the thermals are more or less identical as well.

I defintely agree there's something to be said for having hardware that hasn't been sitting or running for a few years. Wear and tear is a thing to consider. That said, I have a T430 and a T460 and for most purposes they are effectively the same for daily driving. The only reason I have the 460 is because I'm legally obligated by my employer to have a current professional service warranty on the machine I do my work on.

>I am interesting in *BSD support for the x220
Works out of the box with FreeBSD, can't comment on any other BSDs though.

>On my t420 I loose 2 hours of battery just having the dgpu enabled, but not on.
That's my point, you don't need the dGPU on a t420 at all, the intel iGPU is enough.

What about this one? Honestly doesn't look that bad outside of some cosmetic issues.

ebay.com/itm/LENOVO-THINKPAD-14-T420-I7-2640M-2-8GHZ-8GB-RAM-LAPTOP-MINI-DOCK-KEYS-ADAPTER-/361722494571?hash=item5438573e6b:g:JAwAAOSwgmJX0wgT

how much is a t42 worth on average?
is $50-65 too much?

sounds about right as long as it's at least working and in somewhat decent condition
just know that they aren't really useful anymore

If it has everything working, $50-65 is the correct price.

I'm thinking of getting an x200s. Has anyone ever removed the wwan whitelist and managed to get a AWS compatible wwan card working?

I don't know dick about wwan cards; if I remove the whitelist, will any old wwan card work, or is there oter compatibility issues?

ebay is the shit

i was sold a fake T420 battery (with legit Lenovo box and everything, albeit not sealed)

after 2 weeks of phoning the New Zealand helpdesk with no results, I got their US number and called

within 10 minutes I had all my money refunded, they didnt ask for evidence or anything

go ebay! go usa!

t420's are so expensive now
it's a sad world

this is what i paid for mine

what is "expensive" for a t420 in your opinion, lad
I've seen good deals for t420's around $120-150, which is a good price in my opinion

The going rate for a T420 in good condition is about $250, closer to $280 if you want 1600x900.

What's a good cheap tablet touchscreen computer with a decent stylus that I can use to draw memes in GIMP? doesn't need to be professional quality, just decent

I got a i7 T420 with nvidia and 1600x900 for $290, although it had a broken bezel (was $10 fix). was a great deal

where in the world are you getting a $120 t420

Win7 or mint I'm too retarded to use anything else.

Elementary os maybe?

gentoo

Sure thing kid.
Nowhere, he's talking absolute bollocks.
Still a bit low, but closer to the fact. I refurb and sell thinkpads. T420 in B+ to A+ condition is easily going to fetch nearly $300 if you have a few weeks to get it snapped up. $250 and you will sell it in 24 hours or less. The market has picked up big-time over the last six months at least. I have no idea why, maybe more newfags on Cred Forums getting in here.

If that's the case, thanks for helping me do business /tpg/.

mint has some serious issues lately, just go with ubuntu, elementaryos, etc.

>Has anyone ever removed the wwan whitelist and managed
afaik, this needs a custom BIOS like Libreboot/Coreboot

I dunno about that

it seems a bit difficult.

Alright like what? sorry ive not used mint since 2009 .

antergos

Just bought a t440s w/ an i5, 8gbs of ram, and a 180g ssd from a guy on craigslist for $300. Installed debian and I'm living the meme.

Antergos.

imo the t440 trackpad isn't nearly as bad as people make it out to be.

ahh right thanks i guess ill avoid for now

Ive just never used them or tried them

i may give it a shot if it is easy to use.

is that a t420? hows the temps?

I decided to switch from an Asus K55A 15.6" notebook to an X220 for the smaller form factor. What should I expect Cred Forums? I plan on taking the X220 literally everywhere.

>What should I expect Cred Forums?
Keyboard bliss unless you have gorilla hands, then expect misery until you sell it and buy a T420.

My first computer was a Dell Inspiron 8200, hopefully the keyboard feels similar. It would give a nostalgic feel.

or
Edge E520(i3 2310m,128ssd,4gb ram) $160

which one would you recommend?

Get an x131e if you want an 11.6 inch model because they have i3 processors in them and are around $130 on eBay

ebay.com/itm/Lenovo-ThinkPad-X131e-Core-i3-3227U-1-9ghz-4GB-320GB-Win-7-11-6-Laptop-/371736816025?hash=item568d3da999:g:hMcAAOSwHoFXv1Ze

t420 or x220

probably can haggle the price of x130 down to like $80, and e520 down to about $125. Does that change anything?

tfw you don't even have the money to buy your first thinkpad, but I'm trying to save up.

Guys I have an IBM Thinkpad T20 with a Pentium 3 running Microsoft Windows 2000 professional. What should I do to repurpose the machine? I'm looking for a fun project to do (make an arcade machine, have it perform tasks offline that could be useful, maybe install a touch screen and make it a security system) let me know what you guys have to propose and share any links. Thanks.
> Pic related, the actual PC

It's sad seeing the T420 and X220 still being recommended. I was looking into buying a thinkpad years ago and they announced chiclet keys for all of their laptops and it destroyed me. Most of the appeal of the thinkpad was it's rugged and weirdly aesthetic lack of flashy features. I want the scissor keys back so badly. I don't get why they don't have a classic line. There are like, so many different thinkpad models, it doesn't seem so hard to have one with scissor keys.

Does anyone have any experience with the X220 tablet on Linux?

Making an arcade sounds cool. Maybe you can install a good emulator capable of working on a Pentium 3 even though a raspberry pi probably has more power than that Intel processor

>using bloated corporate garbage

Oops, it has Windows XP Pro. I just checked. I really want to make something out of it. Throwing it away seems like a crime

my x201 is hot as fuck.

i replaced the battery recently and re applied thermal paste tonight. its still running at 70-78 C with firefox.

does anyone have advice for a good fan replacement or other things i could do to improve cooling?

also, speedfan does not pick up the cpu fan. is that normal? this is my first laptop and i remember speedfan picking up any fan plugged into the mobo on my desktop, even if it wasnt PWM

>that price discrepancy between i5 and i7 x220's
All I want is simultaneous USB 3.0 + eGPU capabilities on a classic Thinkpad. Is an i7 X220 not for me on budget?

how do you find the temperature on linux?

undervolt?
if your hs is copper, gallium paste?

T420s has native USB 3.0 and Expresscard while still being cheap.

t420s

soldered cpu though, not an issue if you don't care about that

Honestly, what's everyone's favorite thinkpad model? It could be the older ones or newer ones. I personally love the 11E's aesthetic and size, but I like the X220 a lot more. Larger Thinkpads just seem so big in bulky

"sensors" in terminal

Honest, I think my favourite is the X1 Yoga.
I use a T520 because I'm too poor to afford an X1 Yoga, though. And because I need my dock at work.

I'm thinking of just going ahead and removing the display (won't turn on) and attaching a VGA cable to my tv, reword the keyboard to a homemade gamepad, make it Bluetooth and then just have a funbox to play classic games on aith friends. It has like 12 gb's so it can hold a good amount of games and I could always add a USB stick. It has half a gig of RAM btw

X200 and X200T
before Shitovo decided to shit on the brand little by little

Why does Lenovo use panels with such low sRGB coverage?

With bubble-free 1400x1050 screen.

doesn't the wlan de whitelisted bios also take care of that?
just make sure you swap the trackpad and you've got yourself a solid machine
they are cheap on laptops where that kind of stuff isn't that important
but then if you look at laptops like the W series they have absolutely gorgeous displays (like my 520) despite being TN

Plugged my external monitor into my T420 with a displayport cable. No video. Wat do

is it on the right input?
is the port disabled or something?

It's definitely on the correct input. I'm unsure how to enable/disable the port. I don't think it's disabled.

I have work to do, user.

Are any of the IBM Thinkpads still relevant?
I want the IBM street cred.
All I would need of it is to use gcc and use the internet.

do you have gpu drivers install for both the igpu and the dgpu?
also check in the bios

I assumed this unit didn't have a dgpu, but I might be mistaken. I went in the bios and it actually seems like I might. Going to install the nvidia drivers to see what happens. Will report back

you can just check device manager and see
or in the bios under display(?) if you have a dgpu you should be able to change settings for it in there.

Nope, nothing like that in device manager. I do see this unknown device though and have no idea what it is.

How likely is it for RAM to break on a new laptop? Should I avoid laptops with soldered RAM even if I don't want to upgrade it?

install the sd card reader software, or intel ME

There was a setting in BIOS... something like DGPU OS Detection which was disabled. I enabled it and I have a NVIDIA entry in my device manager now. Holy shit. I feel like I just got an upgrade.

extremely rare
soldered ram is actually more reliable than dimms, mainly because idiots won't fucking touch it as often
noice
I'd set it to the 3rd option which should be optimus or something like that for the best battery life, while still having the dgpu enabled.
but if you care about battery life more you can turn off the dgpu and get 30 min - 2 hours better battery life

Thanks for suggesting that. Seriously. I may have used this thing for months without even knowing.

its intel active management technology

protip: look up the device id (in the screenshot u posted) on pcidatabase.com

Yep, I've got display out now. Thank you so much!

Hey guys, do the new thinkpads support Libreboot,

I dont want to be on a botnet, and my T500 is getting slow.

Any major difference between the X200 and X201?

Is it just because the i3/i5/i7 cpus have backdoors or?

I think the non nvidia t420/t430's support libreboot (or it's at least in beta stages)
autism mostly

>tfw can't decide between getting an x220 or a t420
That small form factor is so cute, it fits perfectly in my backpack and I can shitpost comfortably from bed with it on my lap, but the higher res, 3 max hard drives and larger screen of the t420 are tempting too.

Best DE/WM for X220?
Should I give openbox and/or i3 a try or just stick to good ol' trusty GNOME?
Or something else entirely?

Also, screw waiting for a package containing a new battery... the one that came with the machine only lasts 2-3hrs and I bought this sexy beast for portability and battery life...

would I see noticeable improvements from upgrading from 667MHz RAM to 1333MHz on my T420?

Seems people are falling for the meme all over the place, I just checked asking prices for my T520 that I got 3 years ago and it's still literally the fucking same, honestly fuck you guys this was supposed to be a secret and now the prices are actually going up.

Anyone?

no bcos 667 is effectively 1333 because its dual ddr rams, 1333 can go into dual mode to 2666 vut thats too much for t430 so 667 is best

absolutely nothing because you already have 1333mhz ram
if you see a number that seems a bit too low, it's probably because it doesn't include the DOUBLE data rate of ddr ram
don't listen to this troll

u said literaly same shit i said u fucktard

Depends on what your needs are. Cliché as hell but also true as hell.
If I had to pick just one laptop for everything I would go with the BLAZE IT FAGGOT!
Me, got desktop at home for heavy-heavy work, 8560W for heavier work which I usually just leave in my lab at uni seeing as how it is rather heavy to carry around and I use my X220 as daily carry.

but u both r saying the same thing

lmao

thanks anyway guys im assured my t420 is as optimized as possible

what do you think about my stickers btw

I'd go T420 because there's never enough storage, also socketed cpu.

just because you have 1333mhz ram in dual channel mode doesn't mean it's running at 2666mhz you tards
it's effectively 2666, but that's like saying that because you have two gtx 580s in sli you have a gtx 1060
and dual channel 1333mhz (two 1333mhz sticks) is easily handled by the t420, it's only when you have 1866 sticks that you start to have issues.

ok senpai tell me how fast my ram is

also comment on my stickers motherfuckar

That's a cheap trick. I would guess it's due to a loose connection.

Why does this keep on happening on my w520?
The msata SSD is unaffected, and the hdd worked just fine in other laptops.
Before this would happen when I installed my normal 2x8gb sticks + 2x4gb sticks, but after I took them out I didn't have any issues for a while.
But today I just installed an msata ssd into the wwan/msata slot, and mid updating vmware tools on all my VMs. Before it would only happened under heavy loads like this.
I hope it isn't a hardware issue with my w520

>I would guess it's due to a loose connection
Where?
The button, the tray or the mobo?

yep whenever i've seen input/output error on lolnix its because of a hardware fault

try replacing the cd drive

1333mhz
the top is your effective per dimm ram speed, the clock is the actual per dim clock speed.
remember it's ddr, so 667mhz clock is 1333mhz effective

Random high disk usage has happened on every fucking windows 10 system I've seen for some weird reason, doesn't matter if it's an ssd or hdd.

is it normal for my T420 CPU temp to go as high as 85C?

if you look at disk transfer rate you'll see that it's not reading anything at all.
under full load?
yeah that's normal
it's perfectly fine for your cpu to run at 104c for ~30 minutes at a time.
if it's any longer than that then the system should start to throttle itself

cool. i was worried bcos my temps are regularly around 60C which is very hot for desktops (my desktop would usually idle at around 30-40C)

I need a T420, but almost all options have shit screen. Is it worth getting a 1366x one and buying a seperate 1600x900 screen?

Personally I would say the X220 just because of the sandybridge,
It would've been the X220T (I own it and really love it) but for some reason they had to fuck up the tablet variant by making it extra bulky and no latch to hold on to the tablet.

Yes it's okay, i get up to ~93c with my quad core i7 T420.

Yeah you need to change the cable from the HD one to an HD+ cable and then you can resell the 1366x768 screen, everything uses 1366x768.

Bought a x220 week

just came today and every fucking key is worth on it the actual laptop is in very good con just the keyboard is worth every key is nearly shiney

you can replace these easily right? or have i been chinked?

I'm in bong land

hey, i want to buy one of the new 14" thinkpads.
looked at the t460 with the full hd display in a store and the display was actually pretty shitty.
can anyone tell me something about the qhd displays on the t460s and t460p? and are there any differences concerning the keyboard between these models, layout, key travel etc.?
thanks so much!

Sorry not used to the keyboard yet

anyways is a replacement keyboard key and easy to fit?

yeah it's like 2 or 3 screws, and unplugging the keyboard. Then plugging in the new one, and screwing it in.
you can do it in like less than 5 minutes if you know what you are doing

Can someone help a relatively new guy on Cred Forums out?
I have a Dell business laptop with an expresscard slot. I've never used that slot before and I read that somehow you could connect an external GPU to it.

Apparently this is what I would need: gearbest.com/laptop-accessories/pp_229102.html

Is this the only adapter available? Also, what would be a good eGPU to buy? I've read that, via a connection like this, the bottleneck is the expresscard slot?

Please help.

I have that adapter and it's great, you also need a cheapo power supply for the video card. The bottleneck is the expresscard slot around 5-10% on my x220 with my rx480 but it's worth compromising due to having a portable machine with a dock at home just for gaming. None of the bulk of a gaming laptop, and it's upgradable.

Google for available options. Sure there is some forum somewhere specialising in eGPUs.

And yes, the express card slot will most likely be the bottleneck.

>amd egpu
enjoy your terrible dx11 cpu overhead making your mobile cpu struggle even more than it does already

>Is this the only adapter available?
There's the P34L or something like that too, i chose that EXP GDC because of the worldwide free shipping, it works awesome.

You'll also need an ATX power supply for the adapter and the GPU 6-pin connectors.

>Also, what would be a good eGPU to buy?
Depends on your requirements.

>I've read that, via a connection like this, the bottleneck is the expresscard slot?
Indeed, however is barely noticeable in practice.

t. user running t420 exp gdc eGPU

I will user, thanks. Just a bit of advice. Stop being a shill

do you need a 12V DC power supply as well? I see there's a jack on the EXP

>do you need a 12V DC power supply as well? I see there's a jack on the EXP
no

what about thinkpad 13? is it good?

if you use a 12V DC power supply... can you negate the need for a computer PSU?

The reason I ask is because the ATX ports are labelled as "outputs" on the ebay auction

For the EXP GDC no, either you need an ATX PSU or one of those power bricks.

swaggin

can anybody confirm the 'thin' expresscard will work on my T420 which has the "fat" slot?

this picture confused me

>confirm the 'thin' expresscard will work on my T420
You replied to the guy using the exp gdc on a T420

i guess it'll work

t420 has the "thin" one ya ding dong
and yeah even if you had the fan one it would fit just fine

red = goes to your expresscard slot

Respect for clitdrawing

looks like a store selling graphics cards

Found a guy selling fully upgraded X220T but he ignored my message where I've asked him to send me photos
I'm going to call him beforehand and check the device in person but I already feel uneasy

So I opened and cleaned/replaced thermal paste on my W520 but now the touchpad and buttons under it don't work. Should I bother to open it again or is it fucked?

Oh nice i will try source one

and nice digits.

welp I did it and it's still not working
RIP touchpad I didn't like you anyway

thx anons have this picture

did u remember to attach the cable underneath the palmrest

yeah my buttons above the touchpad are still working

I had similar problem with my Elitebook.
Fixed that by taking it apart again and making 110% sure the zif connector was seated properly.
They should fit first try but sometimes they don't.

Well I reconnected it twice again with trackpoint not working the first time.

I think i'm gonna stop playing with it for now, I'm not lugging this thing around most of the time anyway so I mostly use a mouse.

Is the Thinkpad X220 light?

lmgtfy.com/?q=x220 weight

Is it possible to clean up? Or I'll need a new keyboard?

Apparently there are de-whitelisted BIOS's available, so flashing a new one isn't an issue.

My concern is that an AWS WWAN might still incompatible because of power consumption, some something.

I haven't seen anyone try to put a AWS WWAN in one of these old machines; everyone just looks to have been putting in similar models to what was around at the time that cost less.

Oh shit boys apparently I also fucked something in my GPU, if I launch something slightly intensive on it I get black bars running up and down.

Where do you get your stickers?

It's all cool reading about happy people with their devices but anyone had negative experiences buying a used thinkpad?

What should I check apart from the stated in the guide before buying to make sure that it won't turn into a pumpkin after a month? Should I dismantle potential purchase and check the internal condition?

>not using the most supported distros
>being a special snowflake
Enjoy your time sink faggot

T430 with the 420 kb swap is my favorite by a nose. X220 is has a much nicer screen, but I've been using thinkpads too long to care about screen quality that much. Keyboard bliss or gtfo.

Quad core in a T420 was a mistake. Will be switching back.

Was just thinking about doing almost ordering the cpu. Wich cpu did you use and what were the problems

T440p inferior race checking in.

They overheat and throttle.

Still a qt3,14. Mine's not even a Thinkpad.

T420. Switched from i5-2520m that came with the laptop to an i7-2630qm. Temperatures are too hot for my liking for most things.

Idle: 50c - 60c
Light load: 65c - 80c
Heavy load: 96c+

This is with new Arctic Silver 5, and a laptop cooler fan as well.

I had the i7 from an older laptop but might look to order an i7-2640m which has higher frequencies and probably won't toast my T420 up since it's still dual core.

Almost copped that laptop because of you.
No joke still on the look for cheap 1080p versions

Someone remembered me, I'm flattered!

Good luck on finding a 1080p one. They don't show up a lot on the Dutch ebay and if they do they're gone fast.

Ja, zo irritant. ik moet 1080p hebben. Wat heb jij er voor betaald
Dutch ebay users suck balls because of this

>Sarah biedt 312

Companies sometimes offload their "old" laptop stock to employees who sell them on ebay. That's how I got mine.

Prettt good.
And yeah thats what I am trying to get too, some employee who wanted to sell his old work laptop.

OK, but is that good for a laptop or not?

Hey /tpg/, I have the opportunity to buy a T60 off my local Kijiji for 60 syrupbux. It's got 1.5 gigs of RAM and a T5600 processor. Not sure about the graphics card, but the resolution is 1400x1050 and it seems capable of running Windows 7 Aero.

Me and my family have always owned dogshit laptops, this will be my first Thinkpad and I'm just sort of looking to test the waters before diving in head first and buying a much newer one (like a T460). Gonna use it to run childhood games like Rise of Nations and UT2004. Is this a good deal overall?

Or students thanks uni van eindhoven

Is the L series good for anything ? I have three options
1) t430s i7 3520, 8gb, HD4000(+ nvidia )
2) L450 i5 5200u, 8gb, HD5500
3)T440s i5 5300u, 12gb, HD4400
What should I go for, the prices are pretty much the same

>T440s
No contest unless you care about the trackpad a lot.

2)

Trackpad replacement isnt that expensive and worth

Could you elaborate ? Can I switch the keyboard to the old design anyhow ?

Any explanation why ?

You can switch the trackpad with one that has actual buttons.

>the Master Race

>qt3.14
>no nvidia gpu
>no quad core cpu
>no think light
>no SSD+HDD+WWAN master race config
>no usable trackpoint that can be used for gayming
Dell pls.

Master race would be that or X230 with a 16:10 or 3:2 panel.

>dual core cpus
>2016

also if you really like the 16:10 cock in your ass you can replace the screen and upper body with T410's one.

>T430
>dual core
What?

You just said
>x230
Which is dual core only.

Yes, do that.

OK.

Is 140 good for a T420?

>1600x900
>i3
>8GB Ram
>includes power cord

I'm really tempted to pull the trigger.

>i3
Stay away.

>i3

Meant to say i5

You're not too bright are you? Try on Google/startpage/search engine of your choice and look up " weight" and you will find general weights of laptops... really amazing isn't it?

That pic makes the backlit keyboard look terrible... is it that bad with bleeding through when using it as well or is it just that angle?

>not i7
pooRFAG

angle

That's okay, then.

thanks user

It's actually a pretty sweet deal.

Okay, I guess I'll post it and prepare for ridicule.

ebay.com/itm/Lenovo-Thinkpad-T420-14-Core-i5-2-50GHz-8GB-250GB-Laptop-Adapter-WiFi-Web-Cam-/131938215088?hash=item1eb82164b0:g:-UwAAOSwdIFX2DRP

Seems too good to be true anyway

What happened to that poor trackpad?

>his thrift stores have monitors
try living in the middle of Ohio
Where can I find a decent old VGA monitor

Eh, mine runs okay.

It goes up to ~91c in stress test and throttles to 2.9 GHz on 4 cores, which still better than the dual cores imo.

Holy shit nigger, buy that thing ASAP and don't post links here or other user will fetch it from you.

Also, when it arrives, peel the trackpad sticker because it's completely fucked up, buy another sticker (on ebay for example) and apply it.
Otherwise, it seems very nice.

I'm asking again, I need more opinions :/
1)T430s i7 3520, 8gb, HD4000(and Nvdia)
2)L450 i5 5200u, 8gb, HD 5500
3)T440s i5 5300u, 12gb, HD 4400
The price is the same(around 450$), which one is better and why ?

T440s for sure if you don't mind the lack of trackpoint buttons

Depends on what you want and what you use it for
I personally want a 1080p screen and 8 ram atleast
I would go either t430s or t440s and replace the trackpad
Although that t440 seems like the best deal

T440s and a new trackpad.

Are there WLAN cards for T430 that support 5Hz WiFi?

I'm about to pull the trigger and this might be the deciding factor.

my t460 has come lads, gotta say i love it. smooth, responsive, feels modern. great deal on it too.

sup Cred Forums, just got a new x220, trying to decide what I should put on it... openbsd or gentoo?

I love it so far, feels great and it's actually in better condition than what I thought, with the great deal I got on it, but windows 7 is definitely not what I want to run on it

Antergos.

Honest opinion on t430 over x220 ?

I am thinking of t430 mostly of the screen size, and backlit keyboard... anything I should be aware of ?

>based on arch
>gnome 3 by default
nah, thanks for the suggestion though
maybe debian?

t420 vs t430 vs x220?

bump

I've got ÂŁ300, Cred Forums, would a T420 be a good investment and then I could just blow the excess 175-100 on chinkshit? Any recommendations?

430

hi Cred Forums, I am going to buy a x61. Should I buy the tablet version or is it just extra weight and shorter battery life?

So no one has 802.11ac cards that work for the T430?

You do know you can chose DE during installation, right?

uh, no I did not, maybe I should learn to read before shitposting, thanks

I'll look into it then, but I'd still prefer not to use an arch based distro

Does anyone know why my T420 freezes while booting W10 the first time after installing the anniversary update? It just doesn't fucking work, it freezes every time and I need to rollback.

Freebsd

>Does anyone know why my T420 freezes while booting W10
Your ThinkPad is trying to tell you something.

Yes.

or buy chinkshit for your thinkpad like kingdians

Anyone got an EXP GDC V7.0?
How reliable is it?

I have the V8, very.

Fug. The V8 is sold out in the US warehouse on banggood, and gearbest has the V7 for twenty bucks cheaper.

Looks like gearbest has the V8 mislabeled.

Look for the V7 and V8 on banggood, they don't look the same and the gearbest V8 looks like banggoods V8.

AFAIK this is the only EXP GDC adapter that shows up when you search for it. In the answered questions, the seller explicitly states that it is V7

gearbest.com/laptop-accessories/pp_229102.html?wid=21

I'm looking to get a T400 off Craigslist for $80, seems like a good deal but the guy selling it is being a total prick. He won't bother giving me any of the specs and just says "if this was a $500 deal then maybe I would look at it for you, but for the price you should just come and see for yourself" .

I'm really tempted to just ignore his shitty attitude but at the same time I don't exactly want to trek across town to find a 1280x800 former office piece of shit with an 80 gig hard drive and a P8400.

I wouldn't buy it. Seriously, tell him that it takes less than 5 minutes to check it.
Worst case scenario, remember eBay fucks sellers. You can make a claim that when it came in it was not as described, images showed it perfect, but it had damage, whatever

A T400 that's in mediocre condition isn't worth $80. Call him a nigger and tell him to return it to it's rightful owner.

Found a T430 with Gen3 i5, 1600x900, 240gb SSD and 8gb of RAM in 'like new' condition from a very reputable seller for $280. It's in every way better than the HP I spent $550 on 3 years ago.

Should I pull the trigger?

That's a hefty discount, i'd double check the seller's rep.

Seems legit.

ebay.com/usr/redstonepccom

have his lazy ass take a pic of the sticker on the bottom with the TYPE number

Funtoo.

Expect serious cosmetic damage since they aren't even mentioning quality grade, but if that doesn't bother you it's a good deal.

Whats up /tpg/. I have centos on my x220 and I have to install a partition of windows for a certain course in university. The problem is on my windows partition it is not recognizing my network card. If I go the device panel it doesn't even detect that I have one. anyone have an idea on how to fix it?

>almost ideal laptop for me
>shitty panel with ~60% sRGB coverage

Why lenovo why?

well, I'm halfway through emerging @world, so...

what's the deal with funtoo, anyway? why would it be better than gentoo?

I just can't pull the trigger. For some reason I want an X220. Plus there seems to be problems with the fan on the T420s. But really, there isn't a downside to it compared to the X220, right?

I've already asked the guy about it and he's telling me it's 'like new' and according to his reviews, he's a pretty stand-up guy. I don't particularly mind a little wear though.

I think I'll try it.

Search for "differences between funtoo and gentoo", there's plenty of discussion.

Just got my x220 today.
Could somebody tell me about some essential Thinkpad software? Is there anything I need to know before/after I install an OS?

aite, thanks

Have same.
I got one refurbished with the 720p screen, 200$ and then just upgraded the screen.
As much as I hate the keyboard. breddy good buy.

Hello could you recommend me a good introductive book on Java? I'm taking up courses. I know some OOP and some C++.

>For some reason I want an X220
Follow your heart and buy the x220 then.

Between those two I'd pick neither because 12" is too small for me and the t420s has a soldered CPU but that's my opinion.

Just pulled the trigger on that 140$ T420

Anybody know where to get some touchpad stickers that aren't shit?

What's the best ThinkPad for grills? T420, right?

are the hdd's that come default in the t420 (or i guess any thinkpad really) loud? the hdd in the laptop i have right now rattles and it's super annoying, so i need to know if i should drop the extra dimes and get an ssd

Sup famiglia. Bought a T420s today, $280. Already has an SSD and to my surprise even in built 3G.

Absolutely love this thing.

Last week I bought a T61. Shit's pretty cash.

Of course you should get an SSD. It makes the computer so much faster. Forget shitty HDDs, they are ancient and make the computer just really slow.

Even if it's 7200rpm it's nowhere near as snappy as an SSD. And yeah, it's loud.

Magnetic storage is still superior to flash storage for archival purposes.

get an msata ssd

sorry for my ignorance but i'm genuinely curious so i'm hoping for serious answers. why do you guys use thinkpad over any other brand? what does it provide over the others?

What's the best 250 GB SSD?

the 850 evo looks nice for 80$.

T/X series thinkpads of the *60 to **20 era are the gold standard of laptop build quality that has never been surpassed. The only thing they really lack consistently is screen quality, mostly shit TN panels, but that is a welcome trade-off for flawless open source hardware support, durability, utilitarian design, and keyboard bliss.

Samsung

I'm shit at being careful
when I heard there was a laptop I could throw across the room and nothing would damage it, I fell in love.

No one is disagreeing there but you don't archive shit on a laptop let alone a 2.5" drive.

Well i'll bite, because:
>build quality
>can have three drives on it
>socketed cpu, no soldered meme shit
>ultrabay
>no "muh thin" homosexual meme shit
>everything is replaceable/upgradeable
>both the laptop and the parts are cheap as fug

I'm not a cunt so I won't try to squeeze anything out of eBay sellers unless the product sent differs drastically from the description.

It looks like it is in good condition, but the problem is there is just one picture of the laptop, and the screen isn't turned on.

850 evo is TLC trash. Literally lowest bin garbage.

Kingston HyperX Fury 250gb is MLC, so are many Sandisk SSD drives, but check the model before you buy.

The 850 is literally an overpriced meme.

Well, that eBay seller is being a cunt
I think that this would be a fair trade

I think it's because they are so great to use. It's not designed to look pleasing like some generic mass market laptop, it's strictly functional. The keyboard on older models (I own a T60, T61 and T420s) is a gem. It has excellent response and it feels good, writing a lot is not a problem. It's great if you have to do work with the computer.

They are rugged and don't break easily. The older ones even more than the newer ones, but again compared to a shitty mass laptop like a macbook or some asus shit it's bulletproof. Almost literally.

Thinkpads last long too, they are designed to last and that shows. You can still have an older thinkpad from over 10 years ago and it will run like a champion even though it has spent most of its life in BIZNEZ environments. I like that they are not so thin, but rather have good cooling that may be a little audible but at least it's not cooking itself.

Thinkpads have excellent support in pretty much every regard. You can fill the ultrabay with a battery instead of an optical drive. Parts are cheap and plentiful. If something breaks, you can take it apart and fix it because you have access to parts and they are made so that they can be opened up and put back together. It's not easy but try doing the same with some random laptop, usually they are glued together.

I like that I can just take the computer with me and I don't have to worry about it breaking. With other laptops I've avoided use because the keyboards are so nasty to use. Not with thinkpad keyboards, they are in my mind as nice to use as my mechanical keyboards.

Oh and then the price, of course. I don't buy these new, I buy them used. You pay very little money for performance that cannot be matched by new computers of the same price range. You are buying a former top tier enterprise grade laptop. Sure, it's used, but most are in very nice shape with really minor marks if any at all. The screen isn't a peach but it's high res.

What do people think about an Europoor buying a US T420 from ebay.com and putting a new keyboard in? Good idea?

I did exactly that.

Shipping was $100 and then $60 in customs.

Shit's still worth it.

>scroll
>press control afterwards
>everything is big
How do I disable momentum scrolling on x201?

I have a Crucial MX200 in my T410, I've been really happy with it. They seem to be decently reliable too.

I remember my hp business laptop broke while I was on holiday in greece, some repair guy just came to the apartment (after making an appointment obv), it was pretty strange.

Depends on the resolution but that's a 2nd gen i5, meaning you'll likely have Intel Graphics 3000. I would skip it.

it does have intel hd graphics 3000
that's not good i take it?

theyre pretty good for watching stuff too

But the recommended Thinkpads in the OP have Intel 3000 also.
