What's with all the Ubuntu hate?
Installing is a breeze, it takes 5 minutes to make it look nice and it just works out of the box.

>it just works out of the box
Literally linux for normies. Not that there's anything wrong with that.
This. Absolutely.
This.
Many people here still use Linux as a way of overcompensating, therefore it becomes their "secrit klub XD"

I wanted to leave Windows after Windows 10 big brother released, OSX is for fags, and every post on here about new Linux users always says install Mint/SUSE/Ubuntu. I picked Ubuntu and moved to Xubuntu and I love everything about it. I don't understand the hate.
I don't "hate" ubuntu. I think ubuntu is a good choice for some people. I do dislike many parts of it and dislike the philosophy behind the OS though. My reasons are as follows
>Amazon botnet, the fact that they even considered adding this made me lose trust in the project
>Unity looks detestable and feels even worse
>Canonical is a shady organization that seems unconcerned with many of the core foss philosophies
>Ubuntu attempts to solve everything with GUIs, which will only be fruitful if linux becomes a major desktop operating system. If it doesn't (as it is today), getting the users into the cli quickly will make them better, more efficient linux users.
To some users, this is probably fine. And some of these "flaws" are shared with other popular beginner linux distros such as mint and elementary.
I don't hate ubuntu or unity. However arch linux is more my style because I love having the newest packages.
Dumb name
Ultra shitty adware (I'm not some rabid freetard but an Amazon taskbar is a bit fucking much)
Systemdicks
Unity is a bit of a hog
Other than that I don't hate it
GNU/Linux (not "Linux") is like a car, some like it to work straight away, some like to tinker with it and some don't give a crap. I hate those who don't give a crap because they clearly know jack sh*t. So it is fine to use whatever you want however you want, just as long as you know it works for you.
How do you get the OS X Global Menu Bar on loonix?
And what about *buntu in general?
It seems that Cred Forums just damns unity.
Ubuntu banned me from their IRC or merely pointing out that it's an African word
because muh bloat
I can understand the first two. However:
>>Canonical is a shady organization that seems unconcerned with many of the core boss philosophies
Canonical has done more for desktop GNU/Linux that almost any other distro maker on the planet, except for Debian. Without them, even the little third-party software support Linux has would be even lower, and the marketshare much lower.
>>Ubuntu attempts to solve everything with GUIs, which will only be fruitful if linux becomes a major desktop operating system. If it doesn't (as it is today), getting the users into the cli quickly will make them better, more efficient linux users.
GUIs are superior to CLIs in every imaginable way. CLIs should only be used in sys admin, scripting and automation scenarios. CLIs are error-prone, adds unnecessary cognitive load you could be using in something more productive, and a overall waste of time. Just try to convert a video using ffmpeg and then try the same with some front-end like Handbrake. If you need to look the manual, you lose.
Ubuntu isn't bloated, though.
>Dumb name
kek agreed
Lol.
>your a bunch of niggers, your name is even African.

Fucking idiot.
So, Windows 10 is a Volkswagen
Becouse if pic.
IdK why... i still miss BT,
Ubuntu is an ancient African word meaning "I don't know how to configure Debian"
It's just secret club mentality, they probably use arch linux. It's babbies first linux, but it's honestly good in its own right.

I don't know man, it's A E S T H E T I C as fuck tbqh senpai.
>to stupid to compile x
>I only use cli, I'm that hardcore!
Amazon, even if it's no longer enabled by default, the fact it was is quite a breach of trust.
Unity, another DE which isn't really necessary, and was quite bad and bloated in its early days.
Less control during install compared to others, but it's been some time since I installed it, maybe they put back some advanced options (like partitioning for exemple).
Overall I don't really hate it, they even went back on their most retarded decisions (amazon enabled by default) or improved them into usability (unity), but I'm used to set up things my way in Debian, so there's no appeal for me.
Still the best distribution for beginners/people looking for a just werks experience.
any problem?
you know it xD
I install it on my parents and grandparents PCs, easy for them to understand and no chance of them fucking it up.
> Icon Theme: Numix-Circle
> Everything else has sharp corners
For what purpose
This. Mint might be "better" for normies because it looks more like windows and has non-free codecs, and you know how normies hate it when they can't play certain media OOTB.
Also agreed.
C O N T R A S T
Ubuntu hate mostly comes from autists and splergs that hang out at places like Cred Forums and Soylentnews.
Ubuntu is heavily used for servers in the real world by big businesses. No, you don't need to install Unity, or even a DE at all.
Personally, I use Ubuntu at the desktop, using i3. It's great. Rock solid, stable, fairly new packages. If you want something that is not (yet) in the official repos, Ubuntu is often supported with a .deb or even a ppa.
For my headless server and on my underpowered netbook I still use Debian.
Yes, I have also played around with Gentoo and Arch. But they are mostly enjoyable for ricing and tinkering, (not a waste of time as you learn from it), not real work or production use.
A good portion of Cred Forums hates Ubuntu cause they're too dumb for it or any other distro. I see at least a post a day that whines about how they can't into Ubuntu.
disable terminal scrollbars
how do you do that terminal time?
No quality control. The right click options in Unity are all fucked by default for example.
That's why it's bad.
Things should be hard.
>using a babby OS like Ubuntu
lol
get on my level.
>being a pretentious Archfag
what is it about taking 2x longer just to look at anime porn that makes you superior?
Your distro literally does not matter except for package manager and initial software. I prefer pacman so I run Arch. I don't know shit about programming either.
$ whatis fbgrab
fbgrab (1) - takes a screenshot using the framebuffer device
>Arch
How much do you weigh user?
Asking for a friend.
ARCH LINUX COMING THROUGH MOTHERFUKKASS
2 terabytes
its great
How does it look detestable? Its an okay DE.
Its not beginner linux distro. Its normal people distros.
A friend uses ubuntu with unity, never saw this amazon search bar. What are you trying to say?
>GUIs are superior to CLIs in every imaginable way
Nope, GUIs are not bad but are more prone to errors, and more often than not, it's easier to know what the fuck is going on in CLIs than on GUIs.
That looks ugly as hell tbqh
I tend to agree with you. However, there are situations when command line is superior. Especially for semi automated things. I cango to any folder in cli faster, i can manipulate groups of files faster. I like to semi automate things.
Besides, ububtu GUI( and other distros as well) is outright shitty and causing technical problems. It doesnt play well with using cli either.
Linux distros simply dont have manpower nor motivation to create good intuitive guis
That means that the GUI isn't polished enough. A Norman user doesn't want to have to use a CLI to update their system. This is why it's not YEAR OF THE LINUX DESKTOP yet.
For a while Ubuntu's search bar sent everything you typed to amazon without any warning, that's supposed to be off by default now, but it was a shady move from canonical and it lost a lot of people's trust because of that, and honestly I don't trust them as I used to either.
>a Norman user
What about a Jerry user?
Whats the date program?
They tried and they failed. Negative experience is also experience and now there are easons to believe they arent going to do that anymore.
Just like with mint whichs become much more secure after the breach
If we talk about THE YEAR OF THE LINUX DESKTOP, it's not as much because of GUIs but because there wasn't a preinstalled distro on millions of computers when it mattered, now people are used to either mac or windows and if they don't have to change because of work to any OS, they will probably never do it.
A normal user doesn't want to manually do anything with the system, not even update, they want everthyng just working and that, if the system needs to do any kind of maintenance, it do it alone, automatically and when they're not using it.
What makes you think they aren't gonna try again?
On Cred Forums everyone and their dog loved ubuntu in the old days. Then unity dropped around 11.04 and it all went to hell. By the time normies figured out they could turn that off the damage had already been done. As an OS it's great; canocal just made some stupid decisions in regard to its implimentation.
Except its not. When you dont have file icons in front of you you ve got a much more theoretical idea of what you are actually deleting or overwriting. Its very simple to forget you have several webm files and run rm *webm to delete just one. It wouldnt happen in pcmanfm
Because they failed and experienced a reputation lost. It might change but for the time being it should be ok
> rm
A disaster waiting to happen. Use trash-cli or something.
what de is this
Except it's not, why would you just rm anything without checking things first?
It is a case where a GUI makes it easier, I've never denied that.
Seriously, why the fuck would you rm anything without checking things first?
Why should it he okay? They knew what they were risking by doing it, it's like they were testing the waters to do something bigger, and with people like you, thry could easily get away with it.
>run rm * to remove just one file
where the fuck did you learn that? that is never okay
Yeah as i was writing it i thought maybe i should use a custom script invoking rm with that -verbose option that makes a user confirm deletion of files.
Without GUI trash-cli wouldnt be of much help. When you dont see previews for the pictures you are deleting they are but files with unix universal time in their names...
Any more advice on other error-prone commands? Actually occasionally i think i could have typed rm instead of mv. This is possible when distracted...
rm -rf ~ /old_folder
Shiver me timbers
Haha. I wonder what would you think of me if I told you I'm also preferring Clang.
I dont use unity though, and never did. Recommended Ubuntu Server to a friend but suggested a different DE. He was somewhat familiar with Ubuntu and i didnt want him to go through unneeded chore if installing debian.
>occasionally i think i could have typed rm instead of mv
If you're that afraid of doung that, why don't you use alias for that?
I just don't use rm.
I have it aliased to tell me to use trash-cli or if I really need rm I can use the full path
I adore asterisk substitution and use it all the time. Three consequent letters of a file wouldnt be safer. Are you suggesting to abandon the practice altogether?
I mostly do this in /tmp but occasionally in small folders as well. Eg deleting a single opus file among ogg ones
Sure laugh it off, people never complain until it's too late to do anything. But then again, you probably kust din't giva a fuck.
Um no Ubuntu was always for Niggers
stop memeing.
Apparently because I haven't fucked up like that so far. But i think about an alias, yes. Or even better - a bash script invoking rm with safe parameters
How do I make Ubuntu look like this? Is this mate?
Itt: faggots who cant read
Here's another illiterate faggot
It's Unity.
Yep, and in my experience vanilla Ubuntu installs without issues on more types of hardware than other distros do. The Ubuntu installer is great.
we better have THE YEAR OF THE LINUX DESKTOP soon before the desktop dies out to below twenty percent or so of the market
Do people with wallpapers like this actually use their laptops at work?
Mint isn't better in any way.. Ubuntu with cinnamon though...
I like it, it's a good operating system and I can focus on doing things with it instead of having to fuck with it to get it to work right. I just installed ubuntu 16.04. Had some problems with packages but nothing that couldn't be sorted out fairly easily.
I highly doubt it. I might have a furry wall, but at work it rotates through scenery.
I dunno. I use ubuntu, its what came on both of my laptops and it works well.
this desu. if it works. it sucks and too bloated or done wrong.
anything you enjoy. is going to be hated
Why did Linus say he didn't like Ubuntu? I thought he said he likes a distro that works out of the box so he can get on with his life.
Is Xubuntu good my dudes?
cliclocker
You're just jealous, m8.
>work
>linux user
kek
There's nothing wrong with it
Any distro is "good" if it works the way you want/need it to. If you want an easy, lightweight system, xubuntu is great.
You mean "Arch user".
If you don't think Linux is beeing used for work in the real world you're a fucking retard.
It used to be fine before they installed all the telemetry botnet shit.
The correct way is to buy an MSI gaming laptop from Micro Center and install Kali Linux on it.
ma nigga
>Canonical has done more for desktop GNU/Linux that almost any other distro maker on the planet, except for Debian. Without them, even the little third-party software support Linux has would be even lower, and the marketshare much lower.
I completely reject that statement. Redhat is an order of magnitude more important than canonical, and canonical profits off of the success and labor of the Debian project.
>GUIs are superior to CLIs in every imaginable way.
>CLIs should only be used in sys admin, scripting and automation scenarios.
This is contradictory, even to you scripting and automation scenarios are imaginable obviously. Much of what I do on a computer is scripting and automation. Perhaps that's not the case for you, but it is for some of us.
>CLIs are error-prone, adds unnecessary cognitive load you could be using in something more productive, and a overall waste of time.
Be that as it may, even for a user friendly OS such as ubuntu, they are often the best or even the only solution to specific problems. GUIs are much more expensive to develop than CLIs, so until Linux reaches a higher market share, CLIs are going to be a necessary part of using linux for all users.
>Just try to convert a video using ffmpeg and then try the same with some front-end like Handbrake. If you need to look the manual, you lose.
I use ffmpeg (or avconv) on a daily basis. Most of the time, I know what I want to do. Sometimes I don't, and have to consult the man pages. If I need a GUI, I'll use one, but if I don't, I won't. GUIs and CLIs complement each other.
>Mint might be "better" for normies because it looks more like windows and has non-free codecs
Non free stuff is bad though. I only like free stuff, like software and beer.
grow-tesk
y tho
You speak sense fimfam-famalamadingdong.
Well, is there really a reason to install any shitnux distro on a personal computer?
>don't play games, but that would be an instant killer for other people
>no decent DAWs
>shit text editors
>no photoshop, no illustrator
It just sucks.
I only use mint because every other linux distro is absolutely broken on launch otherwise. As much as it's classified as normie linux, it's more of linux that actually functions on a desktop without an hour or two of troubleshooting to get it to even work.
Still no driver for my wlan.
Can't escape the micro.

What a gay.
I forgot but what was that program to easily install .deb or whatever the fuck it is.
Someone recommended it to me to install Chrome because it was having issues and it worked just fine with that.
