Read the OP

Let me shed some light on this shit. A lot of it has to do with the stagnation of the CPU market. That is the best sandy bridge business laptop. If you're willing to sacrifice some portability you can get the equivalent of a $500 Dell for $140ish.

I just bought a Dell Inspirion 13 5000 series 2 in 1. It's thin, light, and has a 1080p display. I love the fucking thing. Here is the issue. It feels flimsy, and has a i3 6100u. The chip is totally sufficient, and literally sips power. However the i5 2520m that you find in most t420s performs almost identically.

The t420 sits in a sweet spot for value. They're build out of gameboy/nokia plastic, they are EXTREMELY serviceable and expandable, they are abundant and thus cheap, and perform almost identically to the modern entry level chip the i3 6100u.

It's the pinnacle of value for your money.
This thread is better suited being nested inside tpg

>I just bought a Dell Inspirion 13 5000 series
>Inspirion meaning Inspiron
>buying consumer class plastic shiny shit
>not buying a Latitude
>stupid fucking people will be the death of us all

I don't. Not the T420, anyway. W520 is more my style.

I got a T520 around 3 months ago, I like it alot.
Bought it for under $300 and it does what I want it to do just fine. The only games I play on it are CRPGS like Fallout or Baldur's gate.

Glad I bought it, and I actually thought about buying a mac book.

*Reverting back to Win7, Win10 runs very sluggish on this laptop*

makes me feel like a big boy businessman and 90's h4xor

t. T430
It's very fast, it ha sgreat battery life (9cell - 10 hours), it's VERY durable and it's gonna last another 15 years of actual use.
>W520
too big to carry around, unless you don't leave your parent's house. Kek.

>2016
>they still have dual core CPUs in their mobile devices
Holy shit.

Because the mouse clit is the closest I'll ever get to touching a woman

Your games run fine on GNU/Linux, stop using the wIndian malware already.

I like how durable it is, and the hardware support is fantastic for FOSS software. The thing they did recently with Linux was a total dick move from Lenovo though, but still, their thinkpads are GOAT laptops.

I can take the RAM off and replace it with 16GB like on a desktop computer.

It's durable.

If I'm done with it or if I wish to get another ThinkPad after the upgrades I wish to do (IPS screen, more RAM, 1TB SSD) I can sell it for 200$ + the bare price of its upgrades to someone who'd be grateful of me for doing all of the purchase + replacement work instead of the mum of a whiny 14-years-old teen who'll try to buy my previous-gen ROG for 1500$ instead of the stock 2500$ price for her son to play to League of Legend.

>too big to carry around
kek manlet

enjoy your absolute trash-tier screen and shit thermals

>manlet
No, I just carry other stuff. The lighter it is the better.
>shit thermals
Said a faggot who's using a bigass heatsink with bigass fan to cool a mobile dual core sandy bridge cpu, top kek.

MFW someone stole mine

x230 here
I love my laptop
It's amazing, it doesn't weigh a ton at all, extremely portable, upgradable... the fact that I got one brand new a week ago still makes me want to shed a tear of joy a bit

The fact that I can slap a mSata SSD in there and if I really wanted to I could get an HDD for storage (which I don't really need since I just connect back home to my media servers), the fact that I can flash coreboot and upgrade the wireless card I have in it, the fact that it can take 16GB of RAM like a damn champ, and it's already faster than most of the laptops my colleagues have that have been made in the past 2 years for a third of the price

I don't know OP, I'm glad I fell for the meme

Affordable.
Durable.
Easy to self service.
Nice keyboard.
Nipple.
Liquid resistant.

That's about it.

>dual core
sorry i'm not a fucking pleb

I like my T420 mostly because of the durability and the ease of service, yeah the screen is crap but the pros outweigh the cons.

It's a shame that thinkpads have shit battery though.

That keyboard is absolutely based

>Does everything I need
>Reliable
>Added some upgrades (quad core i7, SSD, 8gb ram) that cost basically nothing and now it's absurdly slick (luckily not a gamerfag)
>Accessories are almost free
>battlestation triggers Cred Forums

What's not to love

Enjoy your horrible screen

The keyboard and clitmouse are really comfortable.

Hello fellow quad core bros.

Too bad you're using what appears to be Elementary OS

guys I feel awesome right now, I just have to share it

A few minutes ago I connected a printer I have never used before to my T430 with Ubuntu 16.04, and it was already available to be used

so fucking amazing, and then the built-in scan documents program automatically made my files into a PDF, rather than image files

It just feels so weird, because I remember how frustrating things were when I was still a winfag so long ago
Thinkpad + Linux is literally fucking perfect, I don't even use my desktop I spent over $600 dollars on that has an SSD that much anymore, as the thinkpad with SSD route is just as good and you can't beat the portability of it

The thinkpad is, no joke, one of the best decisions I made. I don't care how autistic it sounds. I'm sure you've heard normies complain of slow internet browsing, their tech "not working", etc.
I have such a reliable machine, that I don't even have to put up with inconveniences any longer, and I can also service it myself

10/10 would again

>The thing they did recently with Linux was a total dick move

what are you talking about?

I want to use Linux on mine but my eGPU setup doesn't work ;-;

I understand its hard to give up gaming, but don't be a little faggot

Besides, you can still run the games that aren't total timesinks and are still fun from the early 2000s, and 90s via wine

So far on my thinkpad I have Bejeweled 3 and Jagged Alliance 2 v1.13. what do i like about them? - they don't suck me in, I can just save and quit whenever I so wish.

I never want to go back to being addicted to the online trap

is the thinkpad 13 decent enough? It's the cheapest model and its pretty light

I hope you're just trolling, but if you're not its okay to be ignorant, nobody learns things instantly

Lenovo has bastardized the Thinkpad brand, by making offshoots that have less features and durability. Some examples are the Thinkpad Edge series, Thinkpad L, thinkpad helix, etc

If I had to recommend a thinkpad, go for the most common ones, they won't fail you.
>T430, T420 / T530, T520, X220 or X230, X201, W530/W520, or anything before these models

Do not buy a T440, X240, or anything after these generations. This was the final blow to the thinkpad, where they started soldering parts down, removing buttons and keys, and they even removed the trackpad buttons

>considering a new Thinkpad because it's cheap
That's how you get memed, user. If you don't have the money for the big boy T/X/P series, go with used like the rest of us.

It's not a matter of compatibility but a matter of the hd3000 isn't enough for me thus the eGPU.

>used
why have a laptop filled with old hardware, even if cheap? You're gonna have to change stuff and its not cheap anymore

>dismissing a laptop because it had the keys you never used anyway removed

good sturdy, reliable laptop for Indian weather.

if you arent getting an old business model you are being ripped off full stop

ktgee.net/post/49423737148/thinkpad-guide

T420/X220 was the bestest.

because the old hardware works just as well as the current hardware?

WHAT THIS GUY SAID WTF YOU TALKING BOUT M8

get a t430, the hd4000 was quite an improvement

I tell it to everyone
the only bad thing is the battery has the DRM bullshit

>I am going to force myself to use an inferior product because I don't want to face the reality that it is worse

besides, notice in your post you don't have a single reason why REMOVING a feature is good.
Look, maybe you like them, but don't make some stupid shit up about how less = superior

how is two cores and 1ghz "just as good" as 4 cores and 3ghz?

how is 125gb hd "just as good" as 256gb ssd?

wew maybe if you're using it to browse Cred Forums and little else

are the tablet variants any good?

The comfort is unparalleled.

what is that, a radio?

x61=comfiestststss

>the hd4000 was quite an improvement
Can't justify getting another laptop to play a single game, also:

>the only bad thing is the battery has the DRM bullshit
Then i won't be able to get a replacement battery ever because no genuine batteries with free worldwide shipping.

Ye, tecsun 310. Love me some shortwaves.

what

We're talking about thinkpads here, didn't want to get an used T-series like a T420 because of the "old hardware"

A cheap T420 with the usual 2520m works just as well as the modern equivalent for current tasks.

Replace the stock hdd with one of those dirt cheap $30 ssds and you have a machine that still works fine for cheap.

who you phoning on the radio pussyboy

...

which reader is that?

Get one of these:

amazon.com/dp/B011HVUEME

and listen to shortware through 1.7 GHz (these sticks are the latest modded versions that allow for the HF aka shortwave reception natively).

Shortwave is ok but, being able to monitor *anything* along with that ThinkPad, that's where the real fun is.

shindle paperwhite
Nice! I'll check it out

Know nothing about computers, taught myself within hours, bought one two nights ago. Got it for 250. 8g RAM, i5, 320 GB HDD (upgrade later)

Are you telling me my first purchase was a good one?

Feels good

I'm sorry user

Could've done better on price, but at least you didn't buy an E series or any fuckup like that.

yes

The CPU in the T430 beats the ULV CPU in the T460 in some benchmarks even.

You did well, my son. You did well. Be proud.

>667MHz
You didn't even unlock the BIOS

>EVO SSD
enjoy your worn drive and data corruption :3

What wrong with it?

thanks

that's actually even worse in your case, since you're using msata drive which has much less maximum write cycles to NAND.
And you probably keep page file on it... Kek, enjoy being cucked by samshit.

Well i got it for $55 so I'll wait until the ssd dies and get another.

Them making it hard to install Linux on thinkpads. It's pretty recent.

That's a big ass radio antenna for such a small device.

Are you running XFCE?

Four main reasons: Design, durability, comfort and price.

I have a T60 (in bits, rip in peas) a T61 (pictured) and a T420s (pictured). These are pre-ruined era, maybe these two could be considered the very best there were. They both have a keyboard that cannot be bettered in any laptop. It's a joy to use, I'd even go far enough to say I sometimes prefer it over my mechanical. It just has that feel. And it describes the rest of the machine as well.

I like the design, it's square, there's no soft edges, round anything, shitty hard plastics or poor venting. The finish is matte, it doesn't scratch easily, it's resistant to wear and tear. The machine itself is well secured, it won't break even if I manhandle it. The screen has a high resolution for an old machine, unless you buy the absolute cheapest model. It's very useable even though the colors aren't good. Like I said the keyboard is a joy, the touchbad and ultranav are better than you get in any laptop apart from some apple products. These computers aren't designed for looks, the placement of everything is well thought of and it's intuitive to use.

It's a great machine to upgrade (T420 and older), everything is marked out and hold together with screws. It's easy to access the vital parts. You don't have to be afraid of breaking it, you won't unless you want to. You can fit an extra battery in the ultrabay if you take the optical drive out.

Support is great too, I'd say better than for any other computer. Parts are always available. Cheap. Batteries can be bought from aliexpress for peanuts. No matter what OS you run, you are guaranteed no compatibility issues. Everything is just there, there's information about everything. If it's down to something, it's down to the user to follow instructions that are always available. Nothing is a problem ever with these things.

Then there's the price. It's chump change. It has all the power you might ever need.

plebs

>Not buying a precision

>fall for t420 meme
>start using laptop more to justify expense
>naturally drift away from my desktop
>didnt game much anyway, but now I never even use my desktop
>mfw the t420 made me quit gaming

the saddest part is no one wants to buy my desktop. I spent about $1000 on it 5 years ago. Figured i could get 2-3 hundred but no one is interested.

keyboard is basically porn

I love my T420. I have a couple of them. One has a BIOS lock so I haven't taken apart to short out the password.

Bought a t430s with 16gb ram without a drive or charger for 130 bucks. Got a 128gb shit ssd for 20 bucks. Did i do good?

>They both have a keyboard that cannot be bettered in any laptop
I don't know.

I have to be honest. And I have to say honestly believe the T430 and on keyboard is much much nicer to type on. By a lot. I put a T420 keyboard in my T430 and while I liked having the missing keys back I found I missed keys when typing a hell of a lot more, and it feels mushier.

It's the layout that keeps it down.

But, if it was the new keys in the classic layout, it would kick the T60 and T420 keyboards' collective asses
