Bitcoin mining gets harder for every coin mined.
It was made popular by people using bots to mine massive amounts of coins, but then it leveled out because so many coins were mined.
The reason they did it was to make money from it, but since you cant make any money from it now, nobody cares.

The fact that bitcoin prices didn't drop with the death of mining is rather interesting though. I assumed that the decline in bitcoin popularity would have come sooner.
