Why did we move from the P2P distribution method to a centralized/P2P combination?

The only thing it has going for it is that the downloads can be curated and viruses etc can be removed, I think a P2P system with some kind of voting could solve that though, but there's always the issue of stuffing votes etc..

It's too bad nobodies working on a truly P2P system with features like this but I guess there's no money to be had, and the free software guys probably wouldn't want to touch something like this...

Not sure, probably the same as other P2P protocols where you query peers and they query their peers etc, slow but can probably be sped up with caching

There's the issue of fake files and crap then though, which idk how to solve, older P2P protocols never really solved this so you get results where 99% of them are fake shit where a peer has taken your search term and made fake results with it.

IMO a voting system could probably solve this, but you need a way for users to be uniquely identified with no way for duplicate accounts to stuff votes with, no idea how to solve that...

rutracker introduced magnet links awhile back. You don't need to register to grab torrents now. The only way I've been able to search rutracker without an account is by using my preferred search engine with the "site:(URL here)" parameter. Works well enough for me.

Also, Pirate Bay is still around. It's just full of shitty malware ads.

Given the number of times private trackers have been seized by authorities, I wouldn't trust them with logs of all my torrenting activity. It's more likely that public trackers delete that shit after a while.

Torrenting isn't unanimously used for pirating. It's easy to have peers distribute things like open-source software or operating systems through torrents, as opposed to paying for a host.

Also, consider just how much media is out of print. Downloading a torrent of an album that hasn't been reprinted in over a decade does not hurt the recording industry in any way. They cannot profit from second-hand sales, which is the only "legitimate" way to obtain an album that's no longer being printed for retail distribution.

I however think you misunderstand, when a company deals in anything made of digital data, they know they risk leaks and piracy. Physical things can't compare because you need to physically take those, whereas millions of people could grab the same copy of a pirated movie, and from each of them any number of more people could get a copy. I can't give all of my friends a car by stealing one.
