How do you organize your personal files?

How do you organize your personal files?

I type the name I want my file to be

I put OS and most programs/vydia in my 240GB SSD and media, downloads, and other things in my 1TB HDD

My main directory in my HDD looks like this:
>[1] Video
>[2] Music
>[3] Books
>[4] Downloads
>[5] Torrents
>[6] Other

The reason why I put numbers is to denote the priority of things, I find things like tv shows/movies and music more important than anything else but this can vary from person to person.

After this main directory I put things in more folders to organize them by artist or name of the show/ year made and whatnot.

[OS FILES]
[PORN]
[EVERYTHING ELSE]

Very carefully. Almost everything is organized by file type. Everything expect music and whatnot.
And then i organize it by subfolders, like this: Adobe Acrobat Documents > IT > Books

explorer or thunar or whatever file manager the distro comes packed with

alphabetically

images\png
images\jpg
images\gif
images\webm
images\ the rest sorted by Cred Forums boards\category\subject

videos\movies
videos\youtube
videos\anime\sub
videos\anime\dub
videos\anime\dual-audio
videos\anime\raw
videos\anime\youtube

music is all sorted alphabetically by artist/band name

oh, right and

videos\porn

This guy in pic has a massive ballsack or what?

>120Gb SSD for boot
>480Gb SSD for games and media
>2Tb HDD mass storage, copies of essentials in other drives, and image of boot drive*

*I keep this unplugged day to day

I keep media/doc organise by quarter, rather than file type

Documents/2016Q1
Media/2016Q1
Documents/2016Q2
Media/2016Q2
etc

A folder each for images/video/documents and a download/temp storage folder.

If i need to find something i just sort by date and use my autism superpower memory of when it was used.

No that would be cancer. He's just a fat fuck. All those belly rolls protrude around your groin area when you sit down. It's a sign that someone has really given up.

Multiple drives totalling 23TB

C: OS and applications
D: Pictures and Documents
E: Movies A-G
F: Movies H-R
G: Movies S-Z
H: TV Shows A-M
I: TV Shows N-Z
J: Music
K: Documentaries
S: Standup Comedy
U: UFC

Probably need to split out TV shows to a 3rd drive before end of year. Hoping to grab another 2 4TB drives on black friday.

>pictures
>videos
>music
>games
>comics

Thats about it. Everything is sorted by subfolders alphabetically. I dont really see a need to get super autistic about it

racking up points on private trackers, I see.

>Film
>Anime
>Hentai
>Porn
>Utilities
>Games
>Documents
>things

Mostly by general file type (documents, images, videos, games, etc.) Within those I try to keep folders down to generally ~10 sub folders max except for a few cases.

I tend to name most main folders with just a single letter (e.g., \i\ for images, \d\ for documents, etc.). My main directory looks like so:

>#
>d
>g
>i
>m
>s
>v
>w

I'll leave it up to you guys to guess which folder contains what.

Dear jesus why the fuck do wincucks put up with this. Just make them all LVM, allocate space to each category through a logical volume, (goes across drives if you'd like), raid if you want, btrfs filesystem and mount to wherever you want in the filesystem.

Computer 4 Pine64 (for running a projector or using at friends' house as HTPC if I had friends)

smartphone and tablet don't store anything.

Also have a shared server running debian from Dreamhost that is apparently 4TB, and a seedbox from some seedbox company in france that is 100GB but I only have ruTorrent and FTP access to that one, no shell.

Obviously media is stored on the RAID enclosure and every other computer just has small storage for whatever its intended for.

samefag,

movies is broken down to actual movies and I just use kodi for organization from there.

TV Shows has folder for each TV show, then folders for each season

music is a clusterfuck that triggers my autism sometimes, but it is organized into very general genres(which I'm constantly changing my mind on if some music is 'pop' or 'rock' or whatever, and moving shit around) but I mostly just use my stored music for screwing around in ableton or pcdj and use botnet play unlimited music for streaming when I'm being casual.

I have 4 2tb hdds for music, movies, TV shows and programs (vidya included). Each one is almost full.
I run my OS and "primary" (start up and work related) programs on an 256gb ssd.

I haven't a backup, I'm living in fear until I can scrape together something.

Put everything in the Download folder and memorize where all the memes end up for when I want them.

just RAID5 them 2tb hdds, you'll end up with only 6tb but it'll be at least somewhat backed up.

So aren't you downloading/torrenting videos/music/books?

The correct way. Everything besides porn is secondary content.

i don't have any personal files.
problem solved

"Backups" is divided into "synced" and "non-synced". off-site backups include Home and Backups/synced only

... which would be worse than a simple letter-based system in every way. No wonder nix has been going to shit for the past 10 years.

I just got a new PC with absolutely nothing on the drives and I don't know how to organize my files... I think i'm just gonna stack everything on the desktop as always.

I'm a fucking mess, I have files spread out in like 3 systems, 2 dropbox and 2 google drives.

I'm taking some days off and I hope I cant finally reduce and organise this shit. I plan on centralising everything on my main PC and make a couple backups every few days.

>average-audiophile.jpg
All that heavy equipment to listen to the latest shitty track on even shittier headphones

I know I will get a lot of rage responses but honestly I just pile everything into one flat directory which is on a raid5 of 4 ssds. I don't bother organizing anything. If I need to find something I just use the search bar or search directory feature.

The best thing is prob it caches the location of most frequently used so searching doesn't really take time.

>1337

I disagree with your methods, but that ID cannot be denied.

You are a moron

VERY flat file system: One folder for each filetype, Except pictures and Music which are managed by an the appropiate applications. It works really well since no matter what I'm looking for generally at least I know the filetypes of what I'm looking for so there's only one place they can be.

I really want to make the leap into this, but I've seen folders have problem when dealing with 10,000+ files in them which is why I'm sticking with a folder for each filetype. If that problem was solved and and tags were better this is definitely what I would do.

Poorly

>and tags were better

ffs yes. I would love to have all my images in a single folder with every one of them tagged appropriately. But png and gifs don't even support tags.

I have one of these.

I'm a macfag so tags are system wide. but I wish the finder was better managing them and using them.

There's so much stuff in that picture that I'm sure everyone would have at least one of something in it.

look how big his nuts are

Ok Gary, gimme a sec and I'll look for account information
Hangs up phone

Fuck dude it's not a *mess but it's definitely not 'organized'.

I don't have a backup system yet. None of my files are incredibly important to me rn, but obviously I'll get around to it. I basically store everything on my external HD, and then there are some local files I keep on any one of my machines, for no good reason, I actually don't have a methodology at all. It will become a problem soon. idfk what to do.

damn newfegs
personal shit goes in my doc, rest goes in C:
make separate folder in C for /downloads and vuala

>not photoshopping a pic of Cred Forums's landing page on this guys computer
Low effort post, OP.

Found it. The nose is a little broke, though.

True, true.

I have one of these too!
Also wtf???

samefag

I feel super fucking bad for this guy. At the same time, I really connect to this image. This is what we are right now, it's kind of interesting,

But, christ... He must feel like shit every day. just knowing he's got all this bullshit and can't organize any of it... because where the fuck do you start...

Legitimately how I feel with my file organization lel

he sure likes planes

I have two drives, a 1TB HDD (C:) and a 2TB HDD (D:).

C: has my OS, Documents, Downloads (for small and temporary downloads) and the majority of my installs.

D: has the following folders:

>Art (for all the art I make and all art-related resources like instructional videos)
>Books
>Comics
>Games (containing all of my emulators, ROMs and pirated games)
>Movies
>Music
>Pictures (50.5 of the 52GB folder is devoted to pornography).
>Podcasts (to keep my podcasts, audio commentaries and ebooks separate from My Music)
>Specials (for all documentaries, TV specials and other videos that aren't a movie, a TV show or porn)
>SteamApps (for all of my Steam games)
>TV

It's fucky for now, but I'm going to buy an SSD soon, transfer the contents of my 1TB drive over to that and then use my 1TB drive exclusively to hold my games.

The problem I have is organization.

In Windows 7 I used the libraries function to make a library for each of these folders, but I didn't really like how that worked within the folders themselves. In Windows 10 I've just got each of these folders pinned to Quick Access but then Windows still has a list of the default Libraries, all of which (except for Documents) are empty.

Ok, so why do you have a mexican airplane?

>because where the fuck do you start...
Get 2 sturdy boxes, pick something up and ask yourself 'do I need this?' if yes put in one box, if not, put in the other one. keep repeting for as long as you feel motivated that day, when you get tired leave it and continue the next day. Every time the NO box is filled throw its contents away and proceed. Everytime the yes box is filled place it a corner and put a new YES box on top of it. Continue doing this until everything is either in a useful box or is thrown away. Stuff that's unlikely to fit in the boxes is stuff like furniture and bigger hardware. It should be easy to decide if those things are useful or not and if they are, set them up in their ideal place. Once the big stuff is done you can start finding a home to the stuff in the boxes.

You don't organize that. You get rid of what you don't need. Legitimately ask yourself, are you really going to need this again one day?

Applies to both file management and real world items.

>tfw you do a spring clean and after a month you realize you still needed that file, but now you don't have any backups of it.

I don't know.
My father got it from work a long time ago (~10+ years), and gave it to me.

I delete everything that I can. I only have 89Mb of files. And then:
>Artworks/
The most beautiful pics/drawing ever
>Science/
mostly CS and physics PDF
>Temp/
Anything else. Deleted when done

>tfw your directory structure begins curling in upon itself
