OP plans to host high res fap material on his website. Instead of serving 2MB JPG scans, he can host 1MB Webp scans instead. This shit will add up over time and benefit his website in bandwidth saving and the user in loading time. Everybody wins.

Honestly? I'd rather people turn on arithmetic decoding already (the patents have expired years ago, no need to keep holding the web back) and then start using that + mozjpeg for their JPGs.

That will give you the same quality increase as WebP and is much easier to support since everything already uses libjpeg (which supports arithmetic coding just fine).

Also, I'd rather see people switch to FLIF instead of WebP. It's a much more web-friendly format and doesn't have some of WebP's notable problems. (Mostly inherited from fucking years-old VP8, on which it's based)

Also the mozjpeg encoder turned out to be a huge fiasco. Most browsers can't decode the JPGs it outputs and takes ages to encode. This is why mozilla is planning to add support for webp.

As for FLIF it's still in development and nowhere near usable. We'd have to wait another ~4 years before taking it seriously. Nobody wants to wait that long though especially when webp is already here.

Can you cite that? It seems to be almost entirely false. First of all, every single browser I have on my system can decode the output of mozjpeg just fine. The exception is when I turn on arithmetic coding, in which case only those that use my system-wide libjpeg (which has arithmetic coding enabled) can decode it. So unless you're confusing mozjpeg with arithmetic coding (a JPEG feature that even standard libjpeg-turbo supports), I don't know what you're going on about.

Also, encode times don't seem to be an issue here - mozjpeg -optimize takes about twice the time compared to cjpeg, and about the same time it takes for to encode webp.

I'm accusing you of deliberately picking 29kb as your target size because you know that webp handles ultra-low bitrates better than jpeg, despite jpeg performing better at medium-low bitrates which are more relevant in practice (because even your 29kb webp is full of artifacts)

If OP ever intends to monetize their site they can't because companies don't want to associate themselves with virtual "sea pee". The other problem is as said if you try and make a "real" site i.e. one with lasting catalog of drawn JP works you will be subject to the JP companies that enforce their rights in the USA.

I am going to give you some REAL advice. If your intent is on hosting manga it is a huge waste of time because there are several other major sites already doing this either commercially or with shady or shit practices or malware ads. It will be a total waste of time to host anything other than 480p DVD rips which require a TON of bandwidth because LOL leeches and if you hosted it themselves without appropriate rights (Hentai USA owns a lot of rights in the USA for streaming hentai) you will QUICKLY get DMCA'd. For the more curious, here's FLIF in comparison. I could not meet the target size of 29 kB even with -Q0. This image is 47 kB in its FLIF form.

I did not try to aggressively optimize the FLIF image, though.

Lossless FLIF meets a size of 297 kB, compared to the 619 kB original (PNG).

-controls UI should fade/slide into a tab or something so you have more room for the image
-zoom state should have an option to stay toggled on an entire gallery
-all "next page" controls should be changed when the zoom setting is changed, when zoomed it, "next page" should scroll to the end of the zoomed image (down usually, but changing depending on the image), and THEN actually load the next image. even a lot of image viewers get this wrong, but it allows you to browse a gallery with one hand so you can fap with the other, without having to fit content to the screen/windows size.
-boomarking, favoriting, etc. that might require an account, but couldn't you also do it on a per-visit basis? hell you could export those settings to a text file for users to save without them needing an account.

then you would actually be better than something like ex, for browsing anyways. I doubt you will ever be able to put together a better cataloging and tagging system more robust than ex, if you could do that you would be set for life just by selling that system.
