i forgot something when choose a password. look up a text to md5 hash converter, choose a word copy the hash that is generated and use that as your password. then there is no fucking way she getting on your laptop

yes vm = virtual machine, yeah ubuntu is fine as it offers in encryption, if uninstall the software....it want to anything. if she deletes the .vbox file then you may loss your data but she wont be able to see or access it but if i remember correct if you encrypt the vm then it should as for the password before any of that can be done.

Whole drive encryption should be fine. Veracrypt with Whirlpool (512) and a cascading set of encrytions would be the best (though I can't remember if you're supposed to put the strongest - Serpent - first or last). Bitlocker is probably fine for the vast majority of cases, but make sure to turn on 256-bit in group policies.

Thinking she can get past this stuff is bullshit. The only real vulnerability that might be in her reach has to do with exploiting the TPM, but you can turn it off for Bitlocker and Veracrypt doesn't use it.

Also, "CS student" frequently means almost nothing for this kind of shit.

It shouldn't do too much nowadays, but to be safe stick with a single encryption instead of a cascading one (which is a bigger hit for obvious reasons). Bitlocker is piss easy to set up whereas Veracrypt takes a bit of work -- just depends on your comfort and skill.

And, I'll reiterate: I'm positive your girlfriend can't even break Bitlocker. Just have a decent password. Hell, you can write it down and bring it with you if you're afraid of not remembering it.

With Bitlocker 256-bit I see no performance difference. I use Bitlocker for my internal drives and Veracrypt for my externals (including backups).

Just put a password on the damn thing. Or just hide the drive somewhere outside of it. That's too much effort for pretty much anyone to be deterred by.

use truecrypt - move everything you want to hide into a folder and create a truecrypt image. set it with a complex password. then put it on usb and hide it in the central air vents in your house or something

ccleaner can wipe the free space from windows drives so if you move your files make sure you wipe all previous traces of them. recuva can recover pieces or all of them.

The issue with doing full drive encryption is that she will be very suspicious in case she does look at the drive. If you really want to avoid trouble with the gf then just put the shit on a usb and hide it. What could she possibly find that would be such an issue? Just install Ubuntu and enable OOTB full drive encryption, that's the less suspicious. It always depends of your threat level, but some random CS student is not threatening at all.

Just put a 32 key password (a sentence that only you know and isn't written in any book) on that thing with full disk encryption (root and swap too, not only your home partition). When you choose Debian there's an option in the install menu with predefined full disk encryption settings. No way that she'll be able to crack that in even a year.
