and I don't know. I also ran into problems with mint when changing to XFCE. their default install fucked up keybindings among other things, started using debian/XFCE and Xubuntu ever since and never had a problem

Doesn't mean that their default configuration is the same. Mint locks you into a lot of things. For example I had problems changing keybindings from XFCE config. Every time I restarted, they would disappear.
