Why did VR and 3D TVs fail but the Nintendo 3DS succeeded?

3ds succeeded because it was a cheap video game system with good games

3DTV failed because nobody wants to wear extra glasses to watch TV. And even if you did, for the average family, you're looking at buying an extra three pairs of propriety, overpriced glasses.
It was too expensive for most people and the 'lol images popping out at me fad' gets old really quickly.

The 3DS on the other hand was a successor to a wildly popular Nintendo DS. The 3D required no extra peripherals and worked as soon as you turned it on. And if you get tired of 3D? You turn it off and you still have a decent handheld with a huge library of awesome games.

It's true that I only got one once X came out but the 3D is also really cool.

The reason the 3DS succeeded was because its primary competition (DS) was discontinued. Nintendo knows they ahve a fucking monopoly.

It's been failing for 20+ years. No VR product has ever succeeded in that time period.

There have never been high enough resolution consumer displays. Thank Apple for the fact that VR can finally deliver.

But nobody has ever found some 'killer app' of VR that required higher definition displays. They've had VR in like... flight simulators, orlando/disney had some that were like small-building sized projector habitats. Those were equally good as a high DPI headset.

It never caught on in a larger setting, why do people consider it a breakaway success now that there's some magic graphics upgrade?

3DS is one piece of hardware, VR costs as much as the computer you need to use it with. TVs also needs glasses for each person.

Consumers didn't want them before though, it doesn't suddenly create a demand. It creates a novelty.

VR is close to being able to be successful but as everyone said content is what matters now. Sadly not enough seem to have been bought to encourage the necessary investment in VR only content. It is pretty good for exercise depending on your autism level. (I have a vive and the main use nowadays is exercise with it). You can laugh at how silly it looks if you want.

Right but computers found a way to sell themselves, the 3DS was still built on top of the massively popular DS. It had a library of compatible games and a known demand behind that.

I'm not saying 'hey, nobody's going to discover ANY uses for VR in the next 10 years' I'm saying there were a lot of flops and nobody seems to believe VR can POSSIBLY fail. It's bizarre, I've lived a lot of years with the existence of (90s era) VR. It was always kind of a novelty outside again... flight simulators.

NOW if you say 'we've built this VR headset to replace flight simulators, it's 1/1000th the cost' that's something, sure. It's still not a lot though.

I'm not saying it won't flop, I'm saying that the predecessors of modern VR are invalid evidence to either point. It was a novelty because it was not widely available. Consumer applications haven't even begun to be explored yet because they weren't a possibility before.
