try duckduckgo for the first time
seems fine at first glance
realize it's a completely unreliable and objectively inferior search engine

seriously? do you retards actually use this garbage?

No because it's not trustworthy anyway.

I've been using it for months now and I still can't find any significant disadvantage, other than that Google has reverse image searching.

DDG started with the yahoo sponsored ads a while back, but you can block those easy enough. The bangs are.... something, I dunno. They offer a lot of coolservices that are libre-esque, but I use startpage to search.

A superior search experience with smarter answers, less clutter and real privacy.

finding porn shouldn't be made more difficult on a search engine that preaches these things.

Unlike Google, DDG works over Tor.

Yeah god its so annoying when you try and use their HTML only version like they automatically redirect to the wrong thing then make you manually continue on to /lite/ or whatever it is these days. Just do it fuckin right then piece of shit.

If you do ditch the sponsored stuff (simple) it's still probly the single best search engine to scrape. If I knew any of the !bangs that would probly help.

Thomas Fisher

Of course. It's disguised as protection against bots, but Google just don't have any interest in providing their services to people they can't collect data on. No doubt data on people using VPNs and Tor is even more valuable, so the hope is that they'll disconnect and try the search again in a trackable form.

Hunter Johnson

no, because startpage is better and more trustworthy

There's far too much of this on DDG. Search for the bame of a website or business, and the actual site is 7th or 8th in the list, behind a bunch of obvious spam or unrelated sites.

Completely unusable. "Muh privacy" isn't a good enough reason to use a search engine that is fundamentally broken

Did you turn safe search off?

They have this thing where you generate a hash of your settings and can use that instead of cookies to save settings.

You can have an obfuscated hash or regular settings with ?setting=true&thing=etc

Very handy.

Angel Peterson
Angel Peterson

this is something you shouldn't have to do on an anonymous search engine because every time you open a new incognito/private window, the cookie that saves this is lost. at least google detects naughty keywords and assumes you want it off automatically.

I believe that's mine... I use the nondefault themes cause sometimes something times out and gives you generic searches and this visibly shows you when. (Still not harmful)

So the real problem is SOMETIMES they try and sneak 'Did you mean?' and search suggesty stuff in there EVEN THOUGH THERE ARE MULTIPLE SETTINGS TO DISABLE THAT IN VARIOUS CONTEXTS.

But they do run off google's results. Just annoying.

Lincoln Foster

Remember when the internet was new and fresh and every search led you to a ton of different websites with a whole lot of variety? Do you feel a bit bothered that you get the same dozen or so websites for your queries? Quora, tom's hardware, whatever.

Google has made the internet bland.

I use duckduckgo for that reason, unless it's related to academia.

I just remember when you could type a thing and not have it change your search results under your nose. Or when they would tell you when there were 0 results instead of pretending like they found stuff and lying to you.

IIRC DDG even had something that let you search in literal symbols for codestuff that was nice.

I'm currently using DDG, partly because it's also the only privacy-friendly default option in the settings of my mobile devices. StartPage looks pretty interesting, especially since I currently switch to Google whenever I have anything beyond a basic query. I might switch to it on my desktop.

DDG has literally the worst default results out of any search engine, except maybe searx. I would say that DDG never learned how to write a decent spider but the sponsored yahoo results are usually equally bad.

Ixquick has better results and it's pretty terrible itself.

Luke Jenkins

Switched my default search to StartPage on my desktop, but the shitty ads are hard to block on mobile, so I'll still be using DDG as my primary there. Overall meh experience, but still probably the "best" choice.

It's the bangs.
If you direct you're search terms to google
i.e. !g !gi !gri you can use google advanced search operators.
They don't work using startpage, which is directing you're search terms to google.
Duckduckgo's own search algorithm sucks.
Bangs. It's all ddg is good for.
Startpage sucks, period.

searx ixquick and startpage are just a google funnel
ddg is supported by amazon servers trying to out-spy google

you cant fucking win, just choose one and shut the fuck up

maybe you should stop using search engine to browse for websites and actually utilize the url bar for once in your underage lives.

Elijah Rodriguez
Elijah Rodriguez

My point was the google advanced search operators don't work on startpage.
I haven't tried them on searx because searx just sucks too hard to bother with.
Google's inurl: search operator works almost as well by itself as duckduckgo's bangs. You can however use "!g elsa jean inurl:pornhub" at ddg but try inurl: with startpage and you get fuck all. Pretty lame for a seach engine that just sends you're search terms to google.

ixquick is the opposite of a google funnel, startpage is ixquick WITH a google funnel.

Either way its anonymized just like good ol' scroogle used to be.

Ryder Allen

Startpage would be really good if it wasn't so fuking slow.

Searx.me it's only problem is that it doesn't generate a URL an instead you have to use a cookie but that's alright I guess.

Levi Powell
Levi Powell

In its defense I don't think you can get much faster with 3rd party results anywhere, startpage's slowness is inevitable.
