I lived in South Brasil for a year and visited north. Way more favelas in North. Favelas are way worse. In southern brasil like POA sure you have favelas but they are small part of city. In Recife or Salvador it seems like most of city is favela.

It has favelas, or vilas as you call them, but nothing like NE. They pop up every now and then, but in NE they can be the norm.
