That question is now irrelevant though. We're being dragged out of the EU by England. In order to be part of the EU, the only real chance would to become independent. We'll never, within this union, be able to convince the whole of the UK to rejoin. Scotland would be happy to join today. Fair that there could be resistance from Spain, however, that's a later problem and would certainly be a different case than before. As a non-EU member, becoming independent from another non-EU member, it wouldn't set any precedent within the EU so there is much less of a reason to oppose Scotland from that point of view.

It won't be easy to become independent and get back into the EU, but it will be impossible to remain part of the UK and get back in the EU.

Also, with the fact that England has forced this on an unwilling Scottish public and will have to violate constitutional convention and/or the increase in powers embodied in the Scotland Act 2016 and promised as a condition of remaining within the UK, I don't think many people care about keeping the union anymore.
