Caduceus - Viduramžiai

This man from Lithuania named Lord Caduceus Xul, who released one of the best (if not the best) dungeon synth albums in history called "Middle Ages", supposedly has this other album called "Viduramžiai" but there isn't any information anywhere except on discogs. Anyone got any information on this?

All that I've ever been able to find online are some Lithuanian forums where people post offers of them selling their cassettes of the album. If Viduramžiai is even 50% of what Middle Ages is it will still be one of the best dungeon synth albums out there so I have to find this shit.

Middle Ages is one of the most underrated Dungeon Synth tapes, but to say it's the best would be an exaggeration. Especially when Depressive Silence II exists, which is one of the most beautiful pieces of music across all genres.

However, if more music from Caduceus exists then I'd be very excited to see it. There isn't enough Dungeon Synth tapes from that era. Daoine Sidhe - self titled is another similar one.

Sorry, OP.
"viduramžiai" simply means "middle ages" in lithuanian

This is to funny, i never ever expected to see a thread based on this tape.. Good music album, or demo whatever.

I was in the middle of Middle Ages Part 3 as the strings were coming in so I was kind of in the moment when I said it was the best of all time.

Depressive Silence II is definitely up there in the arguments for #1 but I personally can't even compare it to Middle Ages. They both have such a distinct sound and I feel like they each individually have mastered that sound. Caduceus has such a playful whimsical feeling to it and Depressive Silence has a very serious feeling of grandeur.

Depressive Silence II is seriously a master piece man. That mix of the grainy hollow production with those beautiful fucking synths man, sucks its impossible to find an original tape.

Yes I realize that but there are pictures of the cover that show it is a completely different tape released at a different time.

It is possible it is a reissue or remaster of Middle Ages but I would still want to find it if that is the case.

Since this is pretty much a Dungeon Synth general, what's the best Mortiis album? I'd say it's Ånden som gjorde oppror. I get some pretty medieval feelings from it.

Wow that cover is even cooler than the one for Middle Ages. Dungeon Synth tapes always have the coolest cassette artwork.

dungeonwave when?

Ah, alright.
I know nothing about the tapes and thought you were just running in circles. I wish I could help you, because I'm lithuanian, but I'm not home.
It might just be a different cover that's in lithuanian, meant for local distribution

Completely agree, I haven't heard anything come close to what Depressive Silence has done yet.

Similar to the sound of Caduceus, other newer artists like Hedge Wizard have gotten really close to the same level. But even artists like Hedge Wizard have already sold out of all their tapes and are pretty hard to find online.

And weird coincidence, I just purchased a Fodt til å Herske longsleeve with that same picture and also a Keiser longsleeve from heidenshart today. They're releasing a lot of Mortiis merchandise.

Fodt til a herkse has that real dark aroma about it, but Anden sounds much more grand and clean, its a toss up between both for me. Stargate isn't bad but it doesn't have the same charm to it, you can feel that it he was just done with that kind of music.

This is a real thing?
Like there's a whole community of people into this kind of thing?

Good for you guys. Bizarre shit.

Oh shit, that longsleeve is nice, i need to pick that up. Yeah hedge wizard is pretty good, last i heard he was still working on something new.

Probably going to go with Ånden som gjorde oppror but Fodt til a herkse comes in a close second.

One of my favorite things he's done is definitely the vhs for Reisene Til Grotter Og Odemarker on Keiser Av En Dimensjon Ukjent. Having a copy of that vhs is definitely high up on my dungeon synth wishlist.

yeah it's been a thing since the 90s.

Arguably since the late 70s in fact, when early synth projects made soundtracks for medieval movies.

I consider Tangerine Dream's The Keep OST to be the first dungeon synth album.

Thanks for the help regardless, I was a bit worried it would just be something for local distribution. I might poke around on some of the Lithuanian forums I found mentioning it.

Yeah he did an interview a while back saying he was working on some stuff.

I would definitely recommend getting one, the people running the store seemed really nice and they're some of the only people out there selling any dungeon synth related merchandise.

>Lord Lovidicus will never release physcial copies

pls why

>not making your own coat of arms and hooded robe at home
peasant

WHICH IS BEST?
Nosferatu - Eine Symphonie des Grauens
Nosferatu - Phantom der Nacht
Begotten
The Keep
Häxan

look we're not total neckbeards, we just like the music. Has anyone listened to Mortiis' industrial stuff? Is it actually good?

the 1979 nosferatu is a great movie, so i'd go with that one. Begotten is just fucked up. Not sure about the rest.

Got the hooded robe already, just need the coat of arms.

Mortiis' """industrial""" stuff is less industrial than fucking Blutengel.

Yeah, I've seen it pop up once in the past four years. Guess it was time for a second time.

I guess it's getting re-released on vinyl though.

Any good bm with some dungeon synth interludes? pic related.

...

Obvious one, but all of Burzums ambient tracks on the first four albums, as well as Hliðskjálf, are phenomenal. Han Som Reiste is one of my favorite Dungeon Synth tracks of all time.

Heard it already

An intro more than an interlude but still good

I guess interlude was a poor choice of words, but yeah,

probably the most lively dungeon synth thread i've seen.

What are some obscure Dungeon Synth tapes from the 90's? Stuff similar to Caduceus or Depressive Silence. Especially if the artwork is a black and white cassette fold out with medieval art on it. Honestly stuff like that is incredible to me and I can't get enough of it.

Also I'd like to say that it's amazing that a dungeon synth thread was able to take off like this on Cred Forums. Good job to all who participated.

I highly recommend Old tower

Not updated tho

OP, if you're reading, message the owner a page called "Kasetės" on facebook, he might send/sell you the mp3
And it's a completely different album from "Middle Ages"

Clarification: it's the page with 146 likes.
I wish I could link it but Cred Forums thinks facebook links are spam

Til Det Bergens Skyggene's self-titled is still my favorite in the genre, untouchable stuff

youtube.com/watch?v=AO-69StIDck

Missed the first set, when is the second release he talked about available?

Wow, just checked his page out, it had this picture as the profile if its the correct one. Thanks a ton man. Does the owner of the page speak English?

bump

I've read what the page owner wrote about the casette and apparently there's no digital version.

It's a different album, but "Middle ages" seems like a demo for Viduramžiai, however the owner thinks middle ages is a better album. He describes Viduramžiai as being too thick and layered for the melody to come through.

He had to hunt the casette for himself and barely got hold of it. As far as I can tell, he hasn't ripped it to mp3 and doesn't plan to. The owner also says the casette he owns is a bit fucked.

So yeah, OP. You could try messaging him, he should definitely speak english. I don't count on him ripping it to mp3 or selling the casette to you, however. Seems like it's a collector's item he wants for himself.

around the end of sep.

I can't see how people who never played old rpgs would enjoy this sub-genre, It's pretty cool though, but it's all just nostalgia porn for me

Yeah, I was able to get a rough translation of what he said but yours is much more clear. All of this is still really new, interesting information to me though so I'll keep looking.

It looks like it is a pretty important item to him and i can see why. I might still shoot him a message hoping that at least maybe he knows anyone else with a copy for sale. I've also seen some dead youtube links on websites talking about the album so I think a digital copy did exist sometime in the past.

Thanks for the help, I never thought I would actually learn anything new about this album. Even though there's only like a dozen people out there who probably care about this it would still be amazing to hear so I'll keep looking.

A lot of them are people who have but otherwise it's just personal preference. A lot of people only listen to it while playing tabletop games or playing video games but others listen to it all the time

Nice, he's also doing a giveaway too right?

Getting off topic here, but I really don't get the fascination so many people have with dungeon synth. It's all so cheaply made, both in sound and in structure, I don't really get what's the "meat", if you know what I mean, in a dungeon synth tape.

The way I see it, it's elevator music for black metal nerds

I've just found this thread, Dungeon Synth is great, I can't believe I haven't listened to any before.

Ya ends tonight.
Its cheaply made because it's mostly music made in peoples bedrooms, has for the most part always been that way. Hell, varg made Daudi Baldrs in prison with one keyboard and a tape recorder.

Since it essentially turned into a dungeon synth general this isn't off topic and is a good question.

I personally agree with everything you said except being cheap in structure. I feel that a large majority of dungeon synth albums have a very simple structure, which can be seen as being cheap, but there are a few great ones that are grand and complex.
As for the sound being cheap, it's just part of the lo-fi aesthetic that goes along with the genre which some people love and some people care less about.

The "meat" for me is that listening to dungeon synth brings up a feeling in me that any other type of music has failed to bring up. This quote from an old dungeon synth blog describes this feeling perfectly:

"Bring us back to the glorious dark ages, where God and gods were physically present in the skies, where other lands were alien planets, where dragons might be found nesting deep in the dark forests, and where the struggle for one's life was a daily quest rather than just a fantasy. This is what dungeon synth seeks to restore, even if just for a brief moment. Only in the most terrible decay and darkness of the inner landscape can we find the lost mystery, and art can only bring us there if it is an isolated journey with a mind embracing the degradation as the inherent quality of lost things."

Dive in, all the dungeon synth Cred Forums charts have great stuff and there's an inactive dungeon synth blogspot with a ton of good albums on it.

the fact is that for me, and since Iove only listened to an handful of dungeon synths records, the cheapness actively undermines the possibility of my ìmmagination getting captured.
I'm not hostile to fantasy, if anything I generally like music with great descriptive powers, but when I tried to listen to this stuff, I didn't imagine medieval, lands, dragons, orcs and all that jazz, I just pictured a fat guy tweaking with is midi keyboard.

BUt maybe it's just me, after all I can't even bear to listen to Summoning anymore, and they were one of my favourite bands when I was 16.

>The "meat" for me is that listening to dungeon synth brings up a feeling in me that any other type of music has failed to bring up.

dungeon synth has totally failed for me in that regard. it sounds indistinguishable from other 80s-90s coldwave, goth, synth-based music with a dark atmosphere.

the medieval imagery is absent in the music. the only medieval thing about it seems to be the album covers. when I first got into the genre I was expecting the music to be ACTUALLY based off of / inspired by music from the dark ages. but nope

don't get me wrong, I still like some of these tapes. but dungeon synth always hyped so much as a unique genre, but in reality is just a mediocre off-shoot of dark ambient, electronic, cold wave, gothic, new beat, etc

Yeah I completely understand why it could undermine the fantasy aspect for some people but it just doesn't seem to affect me. I can't say I would enjoy a high quality remaster of Depressive Silence II more than the original but it would be really interesting to hear something like that and I imagine it would appeal to more people.

Who knows, it could turn out that maybe a year or two from now I'll start to dislike the quality of it and have the same opinion as you.

What types of music comes into your mind when you think of music that has great descriptive powers?

Yeah I agree that there isn't any direct medieval imagery involved but the imagery for me comes from the similar sound that it shares with the fantasy and medieval soundtracks of video games and films.

A lot of these video games and films create their own interpretations of these times (although not always accurate) and I guess that's where most of the imagery comes from for a lot of people.

I have to give things like coldwave and gothich music a second listen later to really know if there isn't much of a difference to me. Even if they were to sound exactly like dungeon synth they might bring up the same imagery which would be just as enjoyable for me.

One artist I would reccomend if you already haven't listened to it is Chaucerian Myth. It is one guy's tape inspired by each of Chaucer's tales in Cantebury tales. It is a lot closer to the description of what you were expecting dungeon synth to be.

Oh shit, somebody started a dungeon synth that isn't me.

m.youtube.com/watch?v=X8eXLPR-ei4
Also one of my favorites of the genre right now.

old tower kind of sucks
daoine sidhe kind of sucks

who up for nothing but dungeon synth december?
to cool down from all the bm in november

Some prog rock, a lot of (post)industrial music, kosmische music, black metal, or recent electronic shit like Amnesia Scanner.

eh, black metal is for the most part garbage, tech-death and power metal is much more descriptive

Its bizarre seeing one thats actually staying alive, i've probably ever seen two on Cred Forums.
Classic. Also listening to pic related. youtube.com/watch?v=ccRg8T4xqwE
I pitched the idea before in /metal/ once, since they were talking about NBBMN..

What bands have you listened to that were garbage?

ill probably make a thread for it once december comes around, dont wanna pester the kids in nbbmn too much
hope to see u there

Pretty much every single modern black metal band there is nowadays is complete garbage
The height of bm songwriting was in the classic norwegian 2nd wave bands, everything since that blew total dicks, only very few bands have been good since then, like peste noire, thy darkened shade, volahn
I'm just tired of Cred Forumstards listening to nothing but black metal t b h, when it doesn't even come close to how interesting death metal or thrash metal can get

it sounds to me like you dont know how interesting bm can get

Believe me I know

Dissonant arpeggios are not interesting

I was just looking for one Caduceus tape but it turned into a full blown dungeon synth discussion which is really nice to see. I'd be down for dungeon synth December, I'll keep an eye out for it.

Yeah its definitely something worth trying, the people in /metal/ really didn't give a shit so its a shot in the dark.
Black metal today still has its merits. I just think back then it had more heart to it than it does not to be honest. And honestly death and thrash share the same thing, but i still enjoy it.

>I just think back then it had more heart to it than it does not to be honest.
Yeah, was about to write that but figured anons would spam "Muh subjectivity"

dungeonlorefoundation.bandcamp.com/music
I feel most people who are into the dungeon synths already know about DLF but dropping this off just in case.

Not bad, gritty yet calming. Almost in the same vein of Daggerfall, also cool art.

Good stuff

bump

Paysage d'Hiver has a couple demos that are more dark ambient, but definitely have a Dungeon Synth vibe to them. Die Festung is especially beautiful, with songs that make me feel like I'm in an ice palace.

Nice bump, can't let possibly the greatest Dungeon Synth thread on Cred Forums 404 yet.

>tech-death and power metal

pure wankery

Thats not bad, nothing like what he normally puts out.

listening to middle ages now

youtube.com/watch?v=CL9lgbBgajU

redpill me on dungeon synth

Paysage d'Hiver has one of the most incredible and consistent discographies in black metal. For those who aren't really into black metal it can be tough, but the atmospheres he creates give me similar feelings that I get from some of the best dungeon synth tapes. Die Festung and Einsamkeit are the only two demos he has which are strictly Dungeon Synth/Dark Ambient. However quite a few of his black metal albums have long ambient sections too them.
What do you want to be red pilled on? Dungeon Synth is essentially dark ambient with more medieval feeling to it and a black metal aesthetic. Check out some charts that were posted as well as most of the albums on this thread. Depressive Silence II is widely regarded as the peak of dungeon synth, and can be enjoyed by people who aren't necessarily that into it.

listen to the music and figure it out yourself.

I mean even darkspace is the same way, that shit is so heavy. And i love the few ambient passages he'll throw into darkspace

Middle ages is pretty straightforward, just listen

Is there usually a dungeon synth general or a common thread? I've only seen one in the past couple months.

This is by far the biggest Dungeon Synth thread I've seen on Cred Forums, with some of the best recommendations and posts. I've also only seen one or two general threads, and occasionally Depressive Silence will be brought up in /metal/ or other threads.

I hope Dungeon Synth threads take off though. This one has been very comfy and informative.

Damn, well I'll definitely at least throw together an update thread if I actually do find that Caduceus album.
I wouldn't mind making a general dungeon synth thread like this into a common thing, not sure if it should be monthly or more often though.

And here is what I believe is their final work, the Depressive Silence EP. It's not very good in my opinion, but has some nice moments.

their* fuck
There are plenty of blogspots dedicated to this kind of music, but most of them don't update a lot. Also keep an eye out for certain labels to.
Yeah mightiest is pretty good, its their bm project outside of depressive silence

Got a list of them? I've searched for dungeon synth blogspots but couldn't find any that had dl links.

bandcamp, the old dungeonsynth blogspot, random black metal forums sometimes have some cool off topic threads about dungeon synth

Most of them don't have dl links but the albums they bring up or talk about are easily found with a google search or on bandcamp. This one's really good dungeonsynth.blogspot.com/

I cant think of any off the top of my head, its usually when just looking for music through google and what not. Also labels and mailorder distros. You really just gotta take the time to dig around and look for the shit if you really want it.

Whoops, replied to the wrong post, this was directed towards you

good shit, gonna write this down

Dungeon synth fascinates me the way an early James Ferraro album would fascinate me, the cheapness and the intense vibe despite the cheapness. James actually has a lot of similarities with dungeon synth, now I think about it

Yo OP, thanks for posting about this shit. Didn't even know Dungeon Synth existed. Been enjoying Caduceus all day.

J O O ST

no problem man, wish more people knew about it cause there's a lot of good shit out there

learnt o read

Holy shit SA is a homeboy of mine from Nebraska. He's got a more straight up dungeon synth project called Blood Tower. There's some other stuff on his label Moonworshipper Records.

Yeah i've listened to blood tower, and i really dig Satanic Abortion, shit punishing and so heavy, love it.

Check out Vickers if you haven't yet. Also from Nebraska, but dude plays a fucking axe. More bestial war noise metal or whatever you wanna call it.

Shit, he really does play an axe. They have anywhere to stream their music or have a label? Or are they just a local specialty.

Ummm there's a SoundCloud but I don't know how up to date it is, I had to snag a seven inch last time I saw them for that very reason.

Does anyone know of any dungeon synth or at least medieval music made using a moog synthesizer?

On a side note one of the earlier dungeon synth artists, Forgotten Pathways released a followup to his demo last year.

forgottenpathways.bandcamp.com/releases

I've been in contact with him and he's getting ready to re-issue his first demo.

mystictowers.bandcamp.com/album/caverns-of-crystal

The synths are kind of ear rapey, but like it hurts good in a way. Like there's this mystic, droning beauty about it. Weird shit, I really like it when I'm not sure if I should.

I never really hear anything about what euipment most ds musicians use. Then again i don't know shit about them, but from the shit i've hear i don't think it may be a popular choice.

Chaucerian Myth is pretty high quality stuff, and great music and story behind it to, though im not sure about what he uses. Im sure you can message him on facebook and ask

chaucerianmyth.bandcamp.com/releases

His recent release is pretty damn good too. I'm looking forward to that re-issue, his first demo is absolutely amazing. Any idea when it'll release?

Soon I believe. He's been posting updates on facebook that the art is done and that its coming out in the immediate future.

Ah yeah, I've had Chaucerian Myth on my backlog for a bit now. Gonna probably listen to it while playing King's Field or something.

YouTube as well.

not sure about underrated, but classic.

wow, i'm so happy this thread happened. never heard any of this shit but damn im into it.

anyone here ever listen to Moëvöt? closest i've come to this. i feel like a lot of you in this thread would dig his stuff. its not metal at all but its extremely black metal. puts me in another world

not very synth-y but very similar vibes

youtube.com/watch?v=fzYTZH8fPmU

Similarly, from Les Légions Noires, Aäkon Këëtrëh has some of the most depressing music I've ever heard. Not necessarily Dungeon Synth, it's more of a mixture between black metal and dark ambient, but it fits a similar mood that Dungeon Synth gives.

youtube.com/watch?v=ELnsd9blhhU

Shit thats good, the French in my opinion have a very good scene in black metal and stuff like this, there was a compilation that came from the 90's french scene and it had a track called Project Vampire that was sort of in the same vein as this, totally fucking evil sounding, can't find it now though but thanks for the share, forgot about this guy.

IF you want some cold cold black metal, try striborg, love his mix of ambient stuff and just harsh metal.. also love his drumming.

Love Striborg, one of the most consistent black metal artists. I've been meaning to watch Journey of a Misanthrope, but have been waiting for a rainy and melancholic day for it.

Have you listened to his ambient album from this year? Not as good as some of the interludes he has on his albums, but overall it was pretty enjoyable but depressing.

I've watched a good chunk of Journey and its pretty fucking brutal. He does a good job at invoking both horror tones while making that shit depressing as hell.. and no i havent listened to his new album, i had no idea this was released. I'll have to listen to it.

I only mentioned it since it's probably the closest thing Striborg has done to Dungeon Synth. Btw, what's the album on your pic related? It looks very interesting.

Ninkharsag by Engraved, just what i've been listening to.

Am i the only person who thinks Dauði Baldrs is really good?
It's the first dungeon synth album I ever heard and it got me totally hooked on the genre, but I've seen a lot of people who hate it for some reason.

I think it's mostly that people are disappointed by it as it's hardly the follow up that Filosofem deserved, even if it was made while in prison. Hliðskjálf is much better though, and is a very underrated Burzum album.

In my experience it's just been try hard metal dudes that shit on prison Burzum albums the most.

Who /mordor/ here?

He literally released those albums from a dungeon cell. How much more kvlt can you get?

youtube.com/watch?v=FVTwIYMNJxU

I'll never forget picking up this EP on a whim expecting a couple outtakes from Dol Guldur and instead getting hit with what's still my favourite dungeon synth song of all time. Silenius wanted to do a whole album of stuff like this under the moniker Mirkwood but it eventually got shelved and then he lost the MIDI files for everything and now it looks like we'll never get anything except this.

Only experience I had with this kind of music was Burzum and I'm loving all the projects posted in this thread. Good job overall everybody!

I just gotta ask, I know of the pic before, but is there somewhere a huge list of authors and what they made? I am a stonerfag so my memory is shit, therefore I'd love to just keep a tab open and go through as much as possible.
