>Merzbow – Yantra Material Action (1981)
As approved by Fred Firth, this was once destined to be the first Merzbow LP.
The first track experiments with various layers of feedback, junk used as percussions and what I believe is a slowed down voice; this sample is fantastic: is subtle but atmospheric, and it fits the noise perfectly. During the second half the feedbacks start to get more intense, and it ends in a really nice way with percussions and another eerie sample. A pleasant track, even if a bit unmemorable, with an interesting use of samples and a pretty good noise crescendo.
sound) and more “material action” going on in the background. It is pretty varied sonically, incorporating various bleeps, a radio and even a dog, but it isn’t really enjoyable in any particular way.
Track three features electronic tones and martial lo-fi drums. It really is nothing to write home about.
The fourth track offers some delicious textures and analogue static generated by god knows what, radio and a piano improvising. During the second half Masami starts to focus more on electronic tones until the end. I actually really liked this: it’s harsh, abrasive, interesting and has a structure that evolves in just the right time. Bravo Merzbro.
Is there really a point in track 5? A drum beat and static that goes on for literally a minute. I think that it could’ve been interesting if developed more, but thanks to its extremely short length it comes off as a filler more than anything less.

Tangerine Dream - Zeit

[2/2]
The sixth track is constituted by various layers of raw static and electronic sounds. Most of the time it is a monolithic attack on the ears of the listener, but it actually takes its time to evolve, resulting in a slow but varied and really enjoyable harsh noise jam, with multiple spikes and textures.
Track number seven mixes electronics and analog instruments, and as always they blend pretty good. The track is not really that remarkable overall, but I really liked the accordion and the fact that a couple of times it sounded like free jazz, only with more static and synths.
The eighth track is based on droney synths and static, and is definitely the most interesting sonic experiment on this record: the drones are really amazing and enjoyable, and not only this track feels perfectly complete, but I also wanted more after it ended. I was not expecting it from Masami, but I’m glad he delivered this.
Like a lot of other merzdiscs, despite some gems here and there, this record suffers from incoherence, I think because it’s more focused on experimenting with various sources than to create an aesthetic experience. Still, track four, six and eight are really good, so check them out.
It's definitely not as passionate as an album like Visions of the Country but I still think it's got some very beautiful moments. Watermelon for example is a gorgeous track that is very technical but also evokes some feelings I can't quite describe at the moment. But yeah I get what you're saying.

Lost Salt Blood Purges / Volcanic Queen - Movements Viewed Through a Variety of Lenses Two aspects of ambient are presented here. LSBP tracks are noisy and glitchy. Vorscha is a great highlight. Volcanic Queen tracks are more like noisy walls of sounds with occasional ray of light shining in the background. LSBP tracks are overall more varied and pleasant but it's all good. 7/10
>落差草原 WWWW - 霧海 Wu-Hai An EP coming from this taiwanese band mixing groovy psychedelic rock, experimental folk, tribal percussions and spooky atmosphere. A great surprise. 7/10
>Simon Wickham-Smith & Richard Youngs - The Random Sailor Drone/Folk renditions of ancient folk ballads. The first track is ok but a bit insignificant apart from the guitar. The second track is built on the same idea but adds vocals, great stuff. The last track gets annoying very early. 6/10

@benny profane
Hey, cool review. As requested, comments:
I think my main core critique is that in the beginning of the second paragraph--and this is probably just me nitpicking--that's not the most precise interpretation of what free jazz was trying to "accomplish". I get the idea that you know the "answer", but imo it's not communicated. As far as I understand, free jazz's main goal was (academically) to move from formalism to expressionism, or (in reality) to express oneself completely freely, without having to even consider formal convention--pure expressionism. I think that's an important distinction, and somewhat necessary for any writing attempting to quickly define free jazz. Of course, free jazz did take on its own stylistic tropes, which Taylor and others helped establish, but that's a bit beside the point. (Also, although very clever, it took me a few tries to make the connection between "free" and "freedom" in the first sentence.)
Other than that, I like the descriptions. >it would be a mistake to think that this incredibly free style of playing always results in a chaotic- or brash-mannered music; the second piece Enter, Evening (Soft Line Structure) has a sense of trepidation and uncertainty about it fantastic line
Might also be fun to note that Taylor's "tone clusters" usually just involved slamming his splayed hands on the piano in roughly the area of the note he wanted to hit
np, Wailee Wailee is a great album anyway

Is there a point to Alternate Takes? Is it uncouth of me to skip them?
Austin Campbell
Mostly alternate takes are only included on bonus albums, but you can always skip wtf you want obv. The idea is that the artist has chosen the take he thinks is the best, but you may not agree with the artist and think a different take is better. Meaning it can be worth it to listen to the alternates to find your favourites but it's in no way mandatory (in the same way that's it in no way mandatory to listen to all songs on a bonus album)

>Prince - Sign "O" The Times
Despite the lengthy 80 minute runtime, which I'm not typically a fan of, I loved this album. There's a fair amount of funk, soul and R&B influences throughout this album and they work incredibly well for the most part. The drums on a couple of these are just so nice and Prince's voice is so awesome.
Even when the song subjects got a bit strange ("If I Was Your Girlfriend") I appreciated what Prince was going for and it was still a fairly pleasant listening experience. That being said, the more R&B influenced disk 3 was probably my least favorite part of this album.
Side A is perfect, Side B is close and the other two have enjoyable songs scattered throughout. Very impressive that he was this consistent over such a lengthy album. Maybe I'm just used to listening to shitty bloated No Limit releases that feel like they drag on for hours.
Anyway, I'll likely come back to this in the future, aside from Side C.
On to my next chart!

you're so much smarter than everyone else it's astonishing
A big tease of a record. It always seems to keep on hinting towards something harder and more energetic, more typically footwork, but it too often stays in a weird, cheap neo-soul sound. It's not terrible, it just sounds corny and it just meshes weirdly with the footwork, even if the album does somehow flow remarkably well. The footwork itself is pretty great though, hard and energetic with a lot of choppy samples, it's just not prominent enough on the album as a whole. It's a mixed bag, but with some pretty good high points.
2.5+
Roscoe Holcomb - An Untamed Sense of Control (2003) >old-time, appalachian folk music
The voice is sometimes a killer. Not always, but sometimes it's just a bit too nasally and like the voice of an old man who's just taken out their dentures. For as rough and frankly irritating as it sometimes gets, it is very harrowing, and it fits the backwoods sound of the music very well. The songs themselves are also a bit on the just okay side, a lot of them are standards I've heard a million times, but they're performed with a lot of conviction, and he uses his voice very well for these songs. The major draw here is the instrumental work, there is not a banjo player better than this man, and his guitar chops are exceptional as well. Good stuff.

Acпид - Кpoвoизлияниe (1992) >technical thrash metal
Only technical in that the instrumental work is pretty blisteringly fast, the songs themselves are just standard thrash, decent to listen to but kinda bland. The guitar work is great, and the drum work is even better, I don't think I've ever heard better double bass on a metal album, but the album is produced poorly (too thin-sounding) and the vocals are a bit too much. The album occupies the weird spot between super raw thrash and ultra-technical thrash, but never really embraces either. It's awkward as a result, but still listenable and pretty good.

>there's nothing i could gain from being an elitist cunt on a georgian glass blowing board I guess that's it- since nobody has anything to gain from being a cunt on an argentinian extreme pogo sticking board, they havent anything to lose, either. /daily/ users use RYM as a tool for cataloging and occasionally making fun of each other.
/rym/ doesn't really care for the musical part of RYM and more for userbase drama and the image associated with certain ratings (i.e. a person with 10,000 ratings giving every AnCo album a 0.5 but giving some compilation of old Asian pop music a 5). /daily/ still rates things more according to image a lot but nearly to the obsessive levels /rym/ has.
/daily/ also at least tries to review things while /rym/ makes fun of anyone who even tries (people who give no effort one liners are unfunny memers, people like boldfaure who give in-depth music theory reviews are autistic, and people like dogwander who write long reviews focused more on aesthetics are pseudo-intellectuals ).

guys i keep struggling with shitty university internet. hi how are u what are u listening to lately

we're "pleb" in the sense that nearly all of us, even the trips who are more interested in jazz and classical, have no deeper knowledge of music in terms of theory and history. This is not really a bad thing imo, I just think it's better to be honest about it so that the false accusations of /daily/ being filled with "poseurs" can fucking die already. Pretty much no one here is posing, no one here genuinely claims they have some deeper, purer understanding of certain kinds of music than the rest of Cred Forums, we just enjoy certain kinds of music more than others.
Carter Green

>Low – Murderer
You know that summer has ended when you start listening to Low in the morning.
This little EP contains two different versions of two songs from “Drums and Guns” and “The Great Destroyer”, plus an original B-side.
The title track is simply gorgeous: the guitars are thin, the bass is full-bodied and strong, but not harsh, and the drums are almost not here, but they actually play an important part in the overall picture with their subtlety. These instruments serve as the backbone, and on top of it the vocals sing beautiful melodies and incredible harmonies. To call them angelic is an understatement. The track uses its emotional potential in full with the crescendo in the middle, making for one hell of a powerful moment.
The other two tracks are a lot more atmospheric (don’t get me wrong, the first one is also really moody and lethargic), featuring pounding the drums and shoegaze-ish instrumentation.
I always loved the crystalline arrangements of Low’s songwriting, and all these 3 songs display this characteristic incredibly well: they sound full, thanks to the almost unbelievably perfect harmonies of a guitar, a bass, extremely minimal drums and two beautiful voices. Not only that, but the writing is really interesting and smart, with a lot of subtle changes and layering, creating climaxes and drone-like soundscapes, and delivering its heavy emotional weight perfectly.
This band is tight I say.

a degree of elitism is usually a good thing if there's some substance behind it, in most cases where it goes too far though there is none.
doing decent bad music mostly
Gabriel Gray
listening 2 rn
skinny fists or fsharp asharp
Parker Perry
I think my problem with a lot of 2010s indie rock is that the wear their influences on their sleeves
fsharp asharp is better (or at least more memorable) and first in their discog, so do that
Jose Bennett
What's the most updated version of this?
Ryder Perez
the only difference with the current top100 and that pic (minus a few numerical changeups) is that Rust in Peace is no longer in the chart and Illinois is.
I think I have the unedited version of his pic if u want
Levi Phillips
could you post the unedited picture, I wanna go thru them as well
There's a way more expansive version that's been floating around
I don't have it, but somebody ought to--people were making listening charts out of it
Landon Myers
is it this one?
Alexander Walker
I'm doing this with the intention to listen everything except Macintosh Plus and Yeezus.
Cameron Brown
but those are interesting records (something that cant be said about a lot of other shit in that chart)
Grayson Bell
Keith Rowe & John Tilbury - Duos For Doris Intense, the way I like it. Maybe I something shorter and more accessible to get in this genre would be better though.
David Thomas Broughton - The Complete Guide To Insufficiency Yeah I love this music, I definitely need more melancholic stuff in my life (recs are very welcome btw). Maybe not amazed as much by the vocals (but they're still nice).
Gavin Ortiz
I'm in Idaho boys
Can confirm it's totally not worth it
Do it anyways. Both of those albums are skippable so you're good
Josiah Turner
Yeah copy + paste + reverb is very interesting Herb.
Yeezus is probably the least interesting Hip Hop album on that chart by a long shot.
Benjamin Parker
I'm already doing this. Currently listening to The Dismemberment Plan
Elijah Edwards
yeah thats the one fishing for responses, eh? >least interesting >not MBDTF how
Nicholas Phillips
wew sun gonna shelve this for a while, but I'm very excite
Brody Torres
the production on yeezus is very entertaining (considering how many fucking people were involved), and the lyrics are funny at least
mac plus is lazy yea but it's got some cool ideas
Jack Nguyen
>D Plan No one likes that album except for me. To be fair though, I was an angsty teen (still am!) when I found them so I related a lot to the lyrics. I would at least consider looking up the lyrics to Back and Forth if you have the time.
MBDTF is slightly better but not by much. At least that album is mixed well.
Is it just me or has Ye been becoming worse at production somehow?
VISION
CREATION
WEW SUN
(that was probably the joke and I thought I was being clever but I took the time to type this out so it's still getting posted)
Juan Long
>the lyrics are funny at least You got me there. First time I heard the "300" line I nearly choked on some water I was drinking. Ye almost killed me mang.
Ian Gutierrez
R.E.M. - Automatic For The People It's not bad or anything, I like the jangle vibe on this. It didn't really stick though. Wasn't big on those vocals.
Joseph Watson
right now they are working just fine. I mean they are a bit late for coming out in 1999 with an album like that but are least they are no American Football. I usually tend not to care a lot about lyrics on first listening unless we are talking about hip hop so yeah right now I'm just gonna let it go and see what happens.
Leo Fisher

>Is it just me or has Ye been becoming worse at production somehow? I think he's getting better at production and worse at writing lyrics, just prayin for the day when he takes a back seat to someone who can actually write
Jaxson Reyes
>MBDTF is slightly better but not by much. At least that album is mixed well. >Is it just me or has Ye been becoming worse at production somehow?
considering I gave MBDTF a 3/10 I guess things can only get better!
Liam Lewis
>Gorguts >Mingus >Unwound kek >Weeb kino Who would have known

Michael Lopez
Not even funny.

>The Doors - The Doors I'm not sure why I disliked this so much when I first listened to it years ago, I guess I still had some pretensions about psych/blues rock when I was that age. All of the shorter songs are at least decent with 'Twentieth Century Fox' being the most memorable but the longer jams of 'Light My Fire and 'The End' are definitely the highlights of the album, which is surprising since I caught a live Doors film on TV the other day and it was boring shite. The guitar is a bit forgettable in most of the album, vastly overshadowed by the organ but in those two tracks they work together really well. 3.5/5
>Low- The Curtain Hits The Cast Pretty good, some of the tracks don't really do anything emotionally or atmospherically and with them being so slow it can almost be a slog but most of it's good, particularly 'Over the Ocean' and 'Do You Know How To Waltz?' 3-/5
Jimmy goes through, I don't know if there'll be a requirement for next round yet. I'll tell you in a bit.
David Turner
>some of the tracks don't really do anything emotionally or atmospherically and with them being so slow it can almost be a slog
You can't comprehend on how many layers of Costanza I'm on. But yeah "Do You Know How To Waltz" is amazing
Justin Perry
Sparks - N° 1 in Heaven It was okay, sounded fine, but I guess I expected more. Idk, my brain shuts down rn John Maus - We Must Become The Pitiless Censors Of Ourselves w-e-w, great. Very enjoyable music (relistenable too), appealing low vocals. This might become one of my favorites.
Samuel Cruz
Since there's barely anything left on the drone, I am launching the test tourney. The "test" part of it is the Rudi approach to advancing ppl, which I thought about earlier, seen in Rudi's tourney later and decided to try it out too, because I am a shameless trash who enjoys stealing from others. In case someone somehow doesn't know the heck I meant by this: this is not going to be 1v1 matches, but those with the highest score will advance. For the test purposes no restrictions are gonna be applied in the first round, rec whatever. After the template is filled, as usual, you can place your bet on a tourney winner and in case you win, you're gonna be mini-droned (the amount of albums depends on when you're gonna place the bet, the earlier, the bigger the mini-drone gonna be).
Don't worry it's prob because I'm feeling alright about life today, I'll give it another listen when something goes wrong and get back to you.

Greek names in Greek - Greek name for an album in Greek When this works it really works, I can't deny it isn't interesting, and I will re-visit it, maybe the score will go up on first impression some of it works but some of it kinda fades into the background, which is my main problem with it, it sometimes feels a little samey, that said, excellent textures
Gato - Third World This pretty cool man, it's so energetic, everything I love about jazz is here, It feels so wide in terms of soundscapes, like Mountains of Madness to some extent (a small one, no bully pls) in that you're hit with an extraordinary amount of melody without it making you feel dumb
ruggles is dead replace him in your tourney and continue pls
Adrian Howard
this was meant for and i just noticed he's fixing the problem but d*ng look at these sicc trips
Brandon Russell
i won't wait as long next time. if he's still gone, i'll have an eliminated player rejoin.
Carter Butler
everyone but herb ty
Owen Myers
Sorry GFR looks like I'm taking control of the tourney now.
First act as overseer of this tourney is that everyone except Yamir wins
Angel Flores
Sun City Girls - Wah underrated as fuck, Scaruffi gave it a 3.5, god damn son It's literally just a 40 minute jam of the kind of instrumental flourishes that I've come to know and love, if people *like* 330003 xdressers then there is no reason why they shouldn't like this... It's certainly less direct but in that respect finds a remarkable amount of cogency... Picture this, you, yes you, drop acid and head into the desert, this is the stereotype sound track to such a thing
Paris 1942 - Paris 1942 Man this is just a delight to behold, the band (including the bishop brothers, as of this point yet to do something weird) pretty much delivers straight post-punk, but it's also really surfy and light, it's what could have been in a bizarro world where SCG is the normal... pretty cool
I haven't forgotten the other charts I swear
Liam Roberts
lol so this is like an entire general of abelians now i get why everyone picks on you tards
sad!
Aaron Ramirez
How many flippin' charts do you have mang?
Paris 1942 sounds dope btw. If it ends up sucking I will cry.
Alexander Williams
Henry Flynt - You Are My Everlovin / Celestial Power I like the material really much, it sounds so amazing. But I'd prefer some more ideas and melodies in the mix instead of two super extended tracks, I guess? They're rather pleasant and not that hard to listen though.
The Jazz Composer's Orchestra - The Jazz Composer's Orchestra Usually I am not big on unsettling chaotic music, me I am a pleb who prefers solid structure and doesn't mind repetitiveness. But I quite enjoyed this one (damn this guitar tho). It's a lot to stomach though and will require relistens.
tfw still can't write anything worthwhile for shit when I'm visiting a friend to record something at the weekend.
Sebastian Williams
The thing's filled. Since like right now you can place your bet on a tourney (not round) winner. If you guess correct you'll be mini-droned. You can place a bet in yourself, your winner drone will be extended in case you win. Bet can be placed on one (1) person.
Nicholas Robinson
I'd like to bet on Terminus.
Carson Evans
redpill me on AntiWarhol Is he 'our guy'?
Lucas Scott
He's my guy. I'm not sharing.
Nathaniel Stewart

Michael Wright

Lucas Foster
Unwound - Leaves Turn Inside You Vocals were kinda eh, but I the rest was too good to rate it lower
Christopher Jones
note i didnt rec nu metal so you might wanna reconsider or, i might hmm
Sebastian Perez
how come when the pedophiles get busted they never charge the kid with a crime? most are old enough to understand that what they're doing is illegal or at least inappropriate
Chase Ross
sorry i've been out of the meme game for too long
no but you might in later rounds
Elijah Young
Wear a trip, Kubera if you're not memeing, that's not a very good bet at all, since transgod is one of the people who can rec stuff furthest from what I like
Wyatt Rivera
that's why i'm betting on him i'm always rooting for the underdog
Eli Cook
>C-Bo: Tales From the Crypt
Pretty solid west coast hip-hop album. C-Bo flows pretty well over these classic g-funk beats, talking about a pretty typical selection of gangster rap topics. The beats have a bit of a darker vibe than your typical g-funk album, which I think works well for C-Bo's style. Same elements - 808s, squealing synths and groovy basslines - but they still manage to feel darker than most.
Solid to above average release, though I'm still not too fond of the west coast. We'll see if that changes with this chart. Couple of good standouts though, like "Stompin' In My Steel Toes" and "Groovin' On A Sunday"
Jack Fisher
betting on me again
Zachary Thomas
You can always root for the underpig as well.
Jordan Hill
nice me i bet on smurm
Carson Thomas

Thanks for summarizing the album in a neat synopsis with no real analysis or even elaborated opinion on anything.
