I'm trying to get into some synth-y, new-wave from the 80s. What is essential listening? Where do I go from pic related?

go straight to the GOAT

...

absolutely crucial

...

Many thanks for this. Its a gem.

lots of good stuff posted so far

if you want darker stuff, check out Associates
namely Fourth Drawer Down
Sulk

glad you liked it

their first four albums are pretty much untouchable, but dazzle ships takes the cake.

the others are little more "accessible"/pop leaning, but definitely still worth your time

This and Substance 1987

>tfw I'm not the only one who knows about the Associates
Probably their best song desu

Their first four albums are amazing. Especially Architecture and Morality.

i'm very much obsessed with "A Girl Named Property"

youtube.com/watch?v=GT0FE_ynXIc

but "Party Fears Two" is definitely in my top 10 Associates tracks

Try this one

I like this one much better

My brethren.

Dare is a very good starting point. I suggest looking into some early OMD (as mentioned, especially A&M which is a masterpiece), Soft Cell's first album (Erotic Cabaret) and Depeche Mode and New Order.

where the fuck am i?

Heaven 17 is a band that split off from the members of Human League at some point, and their album 'penthouse and pavement' fucking rules

This one has some certified bangers

GOAT

Hall and Oathes

604 was released much later (2001), but in spirit and execution it recalls that golden era of synthpop.

A L P H A V I L L E

I'd recommend New Order if you haven't listened to them already. Try Power, Corruption and Lies then go from there. For more dancier elements try Technique.

love this thread and love you all

This Propaganda album is a synthpop gem.

Yellow Magic Orchestra, the best Japanese music IMO.

...

Weird album.

Even weirder album.

Yello are legit underrated as fuck.

Agree, user.

>no Simple Minds yet

They're new wave. Too much guitar to be considered synthpop.

bump

>no Soft Cell mentioned
disappointing

But it's mostly thanks to the dude who used to be in Die Krupps.
