PREVIOUS THREAD: I listened what anons didn't like the last time and I changed it. Some sounds are still placeholders and I'm kinda struggling with mix (as always).
How do I play the arpeggio with scales? It sounds like utter shit
Noah Bailey
Best audio interface for 3 grand?
Cooper Wilson
Most people produce in rectangular rooms which are geometrically the worst. That's why everything sounds like shit. Take some acoustic courses and build proper production environments
Jackson Cox
sounds a bit like Miike Snow user. not really experienced enough to give technical feedback.
So I've been recently listening back to the music that I was producing this time last year.
I'm definitely better at sound design and creating interesting, good sounding segments. My songwriting ability's still shit. I can get a four bar loop that I love, but coming up with new parts its so difficult for me.
I am able to finish the occasional song here or there, but its totally up to chance.
Any advice on flushing out great loops into full songs? (I produce flylo-esqu beats fyi)
Parker Mitchell
nice satans trips Can't say anything about your clip I don't know shit about that type of music You think superior is better than the native instruments drums?
Adrian Campbell
Listen to flylo. His songwriting structure isn't that complex. He basically has a loop and then adds/removes elements to create range and depth. I always create a loop with the maximum number of layers and then fade out tracks throughout the song. The session view in ableton is great for this which I think flyo said he uses.
Jayden Rivera
Don't even know where that clip came from desu.
I haven't tried the native instruments ones so I don't know
>clyp.it/x1ovpcqn those guitars are fucking garbage same with the drums You might have some compositional skill it's just hard to see with the poor quality sounds
John Robinson
what's the point of lying here?

u rly retarded man trying to lying me that it's first??? rly??
Josiah Perez
and i sure u can proof that it's ur composition by login in clyp it account and give me the screen:)

Have any of you guys tried mixing almost exclusively in mono. I heard Kendrick's engineer and some others swear by it.
Benjamin Gonzalez
i do it lol listen
Isaiah James
Anyone watching the deadmau5 livestream from his studio? Why does this dude never show his screen...
Matthew Long
there's so much value to mixing in mono/near mono. from many points of view in fact. i taught a class in surround sound for awhile and much to the chagrin of my students i focused on mono at the beginning. it makes everyone's work in surround better and more informed coming from the mono mentality as opposed to the completely banal/oversaturated/taken for granted stereo mentality.
Noah Adams
Doesn't want you to see how he makes stuff would be my best guess. Some artist wont even show you what kind of gear they use.
Carson Garcia
any feedback is greatly appreciated theres a fuck ton of automation going on, never done it so intricately and subtly before
Volume automation of the chords? during the drop? Personally, I think it adds flavour, thanks for your input though :) Are we talking about that same thing
Camden Morales
pick better samples, EQ more, mess around with attack/release/velocity, light reverb
Brandon Fisher
This vid is probably the best explanation for making great hats!
Alright I slept and then woke up and listened to the original version and realized it was shit. So took some of the annoying elements out, swapped the synth for a bell.
I don't know what genre it is anymore, I want to say it was trap but i feel another genre would fit it's description better.
What do you guys think?
Zachary Perez
> > (You) > > What?
Camden Flores
Also, does anybody here actually use an MPC?
Jaxson Rodriguez
whats the best acoustic drum vst?
Jayden Carter
slice drums out of breaks from old songs
Hudson Thompson
Superior drummer if you don't mind 20 gigs or more.
Leo Miller
Would trip hop fit it better?
Tyler Bell
Serious question. I just bought a Scarlett 2i2 and I've been trying for the past few hours to get the plug ins it comes with into ableton. It keeps saying I don't have a license for the pack that the scarlett comes with when I try to use the plug ins, but I do, and I authorized it and activated it and all that business. Has this happened to anyone else with these plug ins? I've already contacted iLok and Softube. its some fucking bs issue or so
Joseph Edwards
I got it too and never figured out how to get these plugins.
Easton Sanders
p chill but work on your mastering/equalizing

Im sorry user:( im hoping atleast one of the support teams knows whats up

Asher Jenkins
Helped a ton, thanks.
Parker Morales
..or don't delete important stuff
Gabriel Butler
Also that. But also to help with identifying the important stuff, don't name it snare.wav
Does anyone knows the bass used in this song Please?
Austin Powell
How come when I record the frequency in my clip using an analog synth it doesn't draw the curves in arrangement view?
Landon Johnson
ackchully not an issue with my generation/model. the vxt series is really blaoted. also, bass response depends entirely on the room and in their current place it's not an issue (in fact I even have the s10 subwoofer and it's not outta hand). but yeah they're not the best monitors in the world but i do fine with them. we can't afford everything we want goodfriend.
i-i can share user
Elijah Mitchell
>salvage dunk The what? Wait, I got it. It's in the debug log. Not sure if that's what you meant, but thanks.
Jack Gray
not him but do whatever works best. I got the MPC2kxl and it's a beast but I kinda wish I had gotten a cheaper pad controller and used a DAW/free vsts instead so I'd have more money for other gear.
Ryan Gray
What's a decent midi controller that isn't too expensive? I was thinking of getting the MPK25 but isn't that only mono?
Jose Roberts
>MONO midi here we go again
Christopher Ross
Always buy used, at least that's my rule ~$15k into this "hobby" else I would've spent 20+. Seriously, so much gear is better to get used and I've never been burnt for it.
Go play the cheapo keyboards at your local music store and pick one up used that suites your playing best. If you're really trying to avoid VSTs and ITB sounds in general, than a good workstation type thing like a Yamaha Motif would be a great pick.
Nolan Morales
m or f? ;)
Samuel Evans
>into music >into audio >into gear >into /prod/ >on the internet >in Cred Forums not female :]

is it really that bad? I've asked about it before and everyone said to avoid it but I just need a cheapy controller that isnt total shit

Give me the best songs you have that use preprogrammed/digital drums instead of physical ones. Either something like Loveless where they mostly sound pretty convincingly real, or something where they get weird with it. Mine sound fake/cheesy as shit when I try and play over them and I want to hear some songs that do it right.
I can't quite put my finger on what sounds so off, might have overdone it with the reverb and layers maybe
Anthony King
My friend is pissed off at me currently because I was completely blunt about their rhyme and tone in their first rap track sounding like someone with down syndrome (almost as if it were a parody.)
Am I so wrong for offering criticism of something that I will ultimately mix for free? I guess if you're gonna use your friend for free mixing hours on their Sunday, don't be mad if they say it's shit.
Just started, using dining table in corner of my kitchen for now
Xavier Allen
i'd rather not, it's literally just a pc with a monitor with some speakers on a shelf next to it looks fucking pathetic
Ryan Ross
>Where in the world is the bass?
Are you deaf or just bad speakers?
Parker Myers
any questions?
Lucas Rivera
Grew up doing FOH and engineering. I only make electronic genres / nu-jazz myself.
I'm short $2k on upgrading the CODE, patreon my ass family
Juan Mitchell
at least you're being honest, simple loops that I didn't bother to mess a lot with but yeah I'll build on those - although, as said, not sure about the criticism on bass
Jacob King
This is based af desu. I'd rather not show it because I don't even have speakers yet and just use (great) headphones. But TL;DW, I have a yamaha pianino on my left side and just a single 1080p monitor so nothing special, but it is pretty comfy corner already.
Dominic Garcia
Cymbals sound really tacked onto the mix.
Connor Diaz
Patricians use Omnisphere or Neon
Jayden Moore
Desk with spaghetti wires but I also just use a FL mostly.
Joseph Martinez
My criticism had more to do with the fact that most music is consumed on earbuds / laptops and "where is the bass" is completely valid when your low-mids have a gaping hole. You could easily saturate or layer in that area to bring out the bass for 90% of your listeners :)
Joshua James
>drawmer 1960
How do you like it/what you use it on
Evan Hernandez
wow I didnt know loveless was fake drums
Brandon Brooks
it's actually a 1969 ME. It currently lives as the pre for the.. JD990 (green screen thing in front) My Vox mic
the tube comp is great for sta-level type leveling on the way in. They say it's "fairchild" like, but I use other comps for busses/instruments
I should almost everything you see was had used for a decent price, so it was more about economics than pure preference.
Aiden Perez
Made this remix of ocarina of time title theme. Tel l me what you think!
As an aside does anyone have the zelda sample pack? or the N64 one?
Parker Cook
Got about £100 ($130) to spend on first piece of equipment.
What would you recommend?
Gabriel Scott
>wavetable >preset-fest VA >FM those are just not the same

Hi guys, m8 at home is a reasonably competent drummer with an electronic drum kit, was thinking live mapped percussion elements around a sequence fixed kick say would be a good way to liven up a track, thoughts?
Landon Bennett
Volca sample
Tyler Miller
Its samples of Colm's drums so it's sort of fake but sort of real
Jonathan Sanchez
Aha, neat. My dad has a drumkit, I should really get around to doing a tune with it
Logan Walker
0:17 to 0:42 and 2.06 onwards are hilarious.
Cameron Gray
I hope that's in a good way...

lmao the drums piano and pads are nice though, in a vaporwave kind of way

where did you learn the basics to ableton? A lot of the stuff in the sticky seems to be for FL
Robert Thompson
do you use eurorack modules without a case? Also what's the name of that 4x4 knob box again?
Juan Price
What has you excited for the TR-09 when there are 1:1 909 clones like the Nava that can be had for cheap?
Isaiah Hernandez
it dont, it just buys ease of use, and on occasion, unparalleled sound
Josiah Wright
Just stfu and check my trips cunt

Jason Foster
You don't have to talk when you make music.

I've made two tracks I've ever listened to for casual listening, one somehow made it on a stoner radio show too. Otherwise I make songs I want to hear that day, and then I try another style.
Who the fuck taught you how to spell and punctuate?
Adrian Nelson
Thoughts on the Akai MPK Mini MKII??
Caleb Price
2 octaves is too little
Aaron Taylor
I normally use 909 samples in ableton anyway, and i've actually been trying to figure out a dedicated drum rack midi controller solution that would operate much like a tr-8 but smaller... the tr-09 solves that for me at a low buy in.
i would love a nava, but building it is a project in itself.
that's a make noise skiff/case, with those 3d printed angled feet that guy on ebay sells for a bunch of cases.
it's a good verse section...come up with a chorus and bridge.
Carson Edwards
thanks ty
Jackson Nelson
how do you reach all that gear on the ceiling? do you have stilts?
Ryan Cook
Stop postin soundclouds you fucking assholes

Nolan Robinson
That wasn't even feed back.
David Bennett
Just report soundcloud links for spam and stfu about it
Brody Jenkins
the wire clutter is surprisingly inviting
Levi White
It's annoyingly difficult to acquire short wires for some reason. I always ask for the shortest but the shortest minijack > double big jack is like 3.5 meters.
Kevin Torres
breaking /prod/ rules isnt a reportable offense
Charles Perry
dude man its music and its a music board man lol
Julian Fisher
>the shortest minijack > double big jack is like 3.5 meters. At that specific store, that is, lol. Maybe I should get into making my own cables like user in the previous thread.
Jacob Cruz
Then post in the appropriate threads then holy fuck, read the fucking OP.
Kayden Scott
Thing is every shitty amateur musician like myself is looking to promote his crap for those sweet soundcloud likes, if you allow this /prod/ will get spammed to death in no time.
Evan Butler
Fuck off retard, go shill your shitty beats somewhere else
Camden Clark
do they have to be stereo? you could use patch cables... get get really short
Jordan Watson
Yes I should probably get a bunch of patch cables, thing is I need splitters and big/small converters and shit. I might invest in some high quality converters too, I have some but they are shit.
Charles Martin
i can;t do pad synths for the life of me, so for the most part i just don't use them but eventually i'll get it. i know it sounds dumb but anyone else have these problems?
Thomas Thompson
yeah loads, e.g. I'm really shit at adding drums to an already existing track so I will just leave them out
Luis Hernandez
yeah drums took me a while. but now i am half way decent at it, what i liked to do was listen to my fav tracks and try and replicate them and eventually i finally learned my own programming. it was a defining moment in my life
Jace Cox
Boring cookie cutter nerd garbage, kill yourself you subhuman shit
Elijah Hughes
i can get good drums and pads almost every time. I just struggle with leads and complex bass lines.
Adam Phillips
i have a $25 amazon gift card and i need a new amp that takes speakerwire what's my best bet?
Alexander Campbell
you got a clypit to back up that shitposting?
Jaxson Stewart
>complex bass lines Just do some octave jumping wankery. Mostly I find basslines should be simple, though.
anyone have a list of common swing settings for specific genres?
Daniel Ross
are you actualy gay, or are you just leading me on lemanon-kun~
Owen Jones
pic related works pretty well for "swing"
Blake Perez
Can someone explain routing in ableton like I'm some retarded child?
All the videos I've watched are confusing as fuck
Sebastian Bailey
routing what? the i/o section seems pretty self explanatory
Caleb Perry
septuplet swing for wonky j dilla/madlid type stuff
Kevin Wright
Like what does it do ? Can you explain?
Camden Reyes
it selects the inputs or outputs for audio or midi
like if you wanted to resample something you'd make an audio track and set the input to the track you wanted to resample. or you could send a track out to another audio track for processing. for midi, you can have a blank midi track with a chord vst or an arp vst or whatever so it'll record the output instead of the single notes you press
Leo Wright
Try using a lower bass that doesn't blend with your melody so much, and generally try to get the drums and bassline more interesting and blended
Joshua Rodriguez
i/o button the right of screen, hit it
Example 1: >Create new audio track >Click audio input source drop down menu >Choose the output of another track Use this as a means of taking the audio from one track and duplicating it onto another track for alternate processing/layering.
Example 2: >Create new audio track >On several other tracks, click audio output drop down menus >Choose the new track as the output location for all of them This gives you the ability to process multiple tracks together as one. Think like having all drums going to one track, or all the bass, etc.
Luis Powell
Has anyone here made any money off their production?
Nicholas Bailey
>tfw no one replied to my WIP
I guess it was too edgy after all.
Isaiah Foster
it buys you fun though programming midi drums is tedious
Aiden Hernandez
only the ones other people pretend they made ; - )
Anthony Clark
hey bros should i jerk off to xosar or nina kraviz?
Leo Wood
yeah, about $15 a month lol
Robert Smith
xosar. but only pictures where danny's stood in the back looking at the camera.
Jaxson Gonzalez
>click audio input source
Where is that exactly ? is it the "Ext.in" button?
Christopher Miller
Off an EP or track or what?
Brandon Hernandez
Fuck I'm late but
Perfect. Thanks!
This is really cool. At least at the beginning. After that it's cool too but it leans a little towards DnB which isn't what I'm going for. I love a lot of the IDM Warp acts (Flylo, Aphex Twin, Squarepusher) but idk much about the non-electronic groups on that label outside of Battles. Who else do you like?
Yeah, the drummer was absent for family illness or something for most of the sessions so Kevin just cut up samples and used them for everything. I think Only Shallow and Touched are the only songs with actual drumming. Works pretty brilliantly for most of the album, I think.
Zachary Ward
"ext in" is one of the choices in the input menu. it means the inputs of whatever interface/soundcard you're using
Grayson Scott
royalties from old dj mixes released on other labels
Hudson Phillips
So pretty much what it does is it makes it sound more fuller ? and it can be routed using multiple tracks into the one that's processing it ?
Once it's doing the layering or whatever can anything else be added to it or is that all and can be left alone once it's doing the job?
Gabriel Gutierrez
Ahh sweet
Matthew Jones
>So pretty much what it does is it makes it sound more fuller ? if you routed a track into another track and it's playing out of both then it'll be louder, which i guess could be making you think it sounds fuller? >and it can be routed using multiple tracks into the one that's processing it ? correct >Once it's doing the layering or whatever can anything else be added to it or is that all and can be left alone once it's doing the job? not entirely sure what you're asking in this part
David Powell
ext in is for recording a mic or guitar or whatever else you can connect to your interface
John Howard
The audio track that is doing the processing, is that all it does or can I do more things to it ?
Leo Martinez
track routing shouldn't be used to boost volume levels.
if you're routing for parallel processing then your parallel track should probably end up sounding fairly different to the original.
if you're routing to bus tracks together (e.g. a drum bus) it's normally done for coherence and convenience.
using it as a volume knob is a waste of time.
Grayson Clark
routing for processing purposes is often referred to as Bussing or Aux Sends, where a single audio track is the sum of several other audio tracks.
This video explains some basic principles in protools, but this idea is used in all daws for any genre. youtube.com/watch?v=ranVw1E7tb4

Carter Sullivan
oi flume it's the guy from before who sampled you, check this out, I haven't been on /prod/ lately because I've been working full time. Any mixing/mastering tips would be greatly appreciated, as my soundcard/audio sockets are rekt and start clipping at -5db on the master
Homemade synths look expensive and confusing as fuck
Brandon Cooper
synthesizers.com modular, about 12k worth korg electribe, somewhere in the $300 range pointless DX7 reissue, $500 roland JX-3P, ~$500 nord lead 4, fancy new digital synth $2300 DX7, $200ish Mashine studio, fucking googe it goddamn
Benjamin Phillips
it's not pointless and it's not at all a dx7
the reface dx has a nice interface for editing FM patches in real time. The best I've ever seen on any FM interface ever. And it's only 4 op so it's less beefy than the dx7
this DX7 has the Grey Matter E! expansion and a massive amount of memory so it'd probably go for more like $800 since it's in perfect condition
Jacob Price
actually 800 is a little silly, more like 600
Aaron Torres
I wouldn't pay 600 for a DX7, even with grey matter
Ryder Thomas

Jayden Hernandez
i just use a towel and put it over my shit when i dont use it so it doesnt get dusty
Nolan Brown
it's alright. There's some things you can only really do with a DAW and I don't like DAWs. The Maschine software can load VSTs and do most things you need a DAW for and it's useful for managing midi. If I had it to do over again I'd get one of the cheaper maschines because the Studio is too big and has too much shit on it for what I do
Samuel Martin
Really makes you think

A pro could make a classic with a stick and a mic
Kayden Robinson
it's still trap man
main thing i don't like about your song is that it is very repetitive, there is not enough difference between each phrase of your song and just in general the song structure is pretty random.
there's nothing wrong with that. I make music for me, not for anyone else. I sit down for an evening and I make loops and phrases and sometimes songs and nobody hears them but me.
This weekend I added 12 additional CV outputs to my Minibrute and patched them to this d-sub 25 port. Next weekend I will make a 1/4" TS breakout box
