ITT: Alternate musical histories

>Hard Mode
No "A universe where X never existed"

I'd love to see an alternate Metallica history.
>Cliff Burton doesn't die in '86
>As a result the band boots Lars like they planned to
>AJFO doesn't get mixed to shit and they're able to write actual progressive metal instead of just meandering, pointlessly long songs

Only thing is, if they were able to make a better AJFO, I dunno if they'd still want to go the non-thrashy route of The Black Album

I'd like to see a universe where he didn't die. He'd just kicked his drug addictions which had caused his music to drop in quality. The albums he released before his death were a bit of a return to form and he was really interested in punk and engulfing himself in the punk scene. I'd love to have seen a punk T Rex album or what he'd have done in the 80s and onwards. Perhaps he could have become a bit like Bowie. Alas, we'll never know.

>Genesis decide to call it quits after Duke since prog is pretty much dead by 1980
>Abacab, the Mama album and Invisible Touch get released as Phil Collins solo records
>instead of We Can't Dance in 1991 we get a new Genesis album with the classic line-up reunited as the band's definitive swan song
>Calling All Stations was never a thing

He successfully kicks heroin, divorces Courtney and goes solo: firstly collaborating in a two-album project with Michael Stipe, taking a hiatus to spend time raising Frances Bean before reemerging as a radio-friendly stadium metal act in the early 00s

...

Why stop there? Let's go crazy with those dreams:
>he actually develops a good music taste, never marries Courtney, becomes a frequent contributor with the Melvins and Earth and Nirvana is now his experimental sludge act

>Abacab, the Mama album and Invisible Touch get released as Phil Collins solo records

Those albums would probably not get all the hate if that happened. If you take away the Genesis name from them, they're actually pretty good pop albums.

A Universe where The Beatles continued up to 1974

Not bad. Although I like the idea of after In Utero, Nirvana disbands and then he either joins Earth/the Melvins or some kind of supergroup is formed.

What direction would you want to see the music take after the stripped back, back to basics Let It Be?

Euronymous kills Varg in self defense

I suppose they'd try to do some Art pop

An universe where Lou Reed releases a good album with Metallica.

>Buddy Holly et al. don't die in that plane crash

Not that it would likely have any significant impact on music but hey.

He'd probably join in the psychedelia scene in the 60s

>>As a result the band boots Lars like they planned to
Source?

>Ayers never cucks Cale
Now pic related is actually an unironically good album.

>An universe where Lou Reed releases a good album

Lame. Euronymous was a huge fucking fag.

A universe where it was Devo instead of Talking Heads who Brian Eno continued to have a hardon for and made a Remain In Light type album with them.

What if John Lennon and Buddy Holly do a collab in a Au where Buddy is still alive

Or his parents stay together in a happy marriage, kurt is a grade a student and accomplished sportsman in high school, goes on to become happily married, working in a highly paid career and investing heavily in the tech sector.

Unlikely. He still had ADHD and Bipolar which would have worked very much against him, though he probably would have had a better grounding that way.

I just want an universe where genevieve doesn't die

I'm sorry Phil

Damn. Oh what could have been.

This is really mean and I feel bad for thinking it because I love Philly-boy and am wearing a Glow Pt. 2 shirt right now, but what if Genevieve dies and Phil releases a ambient avant folk masterpiece?

Descendents don't go pop punk right after Milo Goes To College. Instead they release a trilogy of "Milo Goes To X" albums in the same style as Milo Goes To College/All.

Milo Goes To College
Milo Goes To Work
Milo Goes To Hell

They keep the super tight, fast, short songs, incorperating some of the wonky weird instrumentals from All. They don't need to release anything else after these three albums.

it's not worth it user

A universe where the backlash against Pinkerton doesn't cause Rivers to lose faith in his abilities and turn to shit but rather makes him more willing to experiment, resulting in a god-tier streak of albums of ever-increasing quality.

Yeah. With a better drummer and Cliff, they could've kickstarted prog rock in a really awesome way, with interesting rhythm parts, but without the need for high-ass vocals or a bunch of synths, just good, well-written progressive thrash. I guess if that album was super successful then they wouldn't have had felt the need to go back to basics with the Black Album then, which I have mixed feelings about since I like that album. Maybe they would've kept those songs but turned them into longer, thrasher versions.

That was good up until the stadium metal bullshit.

He would have collaborated with Stipe and it would have gotten great reviews but not been commercially successful. He woulda followed it up with his debut solo album which would have been one of the biggest albums of the late 90s and then gone on a 5 year hiatus.

Re-emerging in the early-mid 2000s with a run of experimental solo albums featuring guys like Trent Reznor, Thom Yorke, Aphex Twin, more Mike Stipe and Jeff Tweedy

Kool Keith gets readmitted to the mental hospital after Sex Style, comes out with another even better pornocore album and then stops making albums entirely.

Watkin and Yolandi never form Die Antwoord and instead continue with Sibot to make more abstract hip hop.

What point would you consider stadium metal bullshit? Nevermind?

Dave stayed, Cliff didn't die, and Lars was kicked out.

Lemmy doesn't team up with Wendy O. Williams and so Eddie doesn't get kicked from the band. I like every Motörhead album but Eddie is my favorite guitarist and I think the band could have made some great Ace of Spades level albums given good production.

Kai Hansen doesn't leave Helloween and the band becomes Germany's Maiden, following the Keeper albums with more great records a la Maiden.

ive always think that something like shellac is how cobain would have approach a new project, with more people and mixed with a bit of experimental-weird stuff

A lot less one-man bedroom bands would be sprouting in the following years.

Forgot about Dave. Yeah, a James/Dave/Cliff/other better drummer lineup would've had so much potential

Igno doesn't die.
Kiske doesn't leave and doesn't go fat and bald.
Hansen joins up later to record Keeper of the Seven Keys part 3.
No fucking Nuclear Blast.

If Kai doesn't leave then Gamma Ray is kill. Please no

HOLY SHIT I DIDN'T KNOW SHE ACTUALLY DIED WHAT THE HELL HOW HAVE I MISSED Cred Forums TALKING ABOUT THIS.

They refuse the offers made to them by the labels the people they signed with and sign with someone much more trustworthy so they didn't end up with any of the monetary or legal issues they did. They continue releasing high quality work throughout the whole of the 70's, becoming one of the decades biggest bands. Ham and Evans live to become fairly successful and happy men.

Shit you're right. They're great too. But still Helloween would have catapulted into superbandom if they kept the keeper lineup. I'd be curious to see that.

kiedis OD after BSSM, band splits, best band ever

Pretty good man
Tbh I just threw in the 'stadium metal' bit as a nod toward the 'Kurt is actually Chad Kroeger' meme, just being a little facetious, yeah he could've gone on to do some great things, I imagine.

How great would it have been to see an ongoing feud between Cobain and Grohl in the press for like 20 year before the eventual and inevitable Nirvana reunion?

>Kiedis ODs on heroin early in career
>band get new singer
>best band ever

But Lulu is a good album

I'd also want to see an alternate reality where Grohl does anything worthwhile after Nirvana, so it can be a rival genius sorta thing instead of Guns n Roses 2.0

Bowie, what are you doing here? I thought you were dead.

I would like to think with Kurt still being alive Dave would have been motivated to try harder and have a more serious career. But chances are he wouldn't even have become that famous, at least not near the level that Foo Fighters are today.
