I like my theory though, that there is one female per generation and that there wasn't one for some reason in the second most recent generation (the one with Smurfette in it). Maybe the female smurf of the third generation up died before giving birth to female. That was why Gargamel made smurfette, so the smurfs wouldn't die out.
