Uh, yeah... pretty much. Although, like I said, the PARTS do NOT always relate to the greater Kanji itself.
Kanji are actually Ideograms, ideas personified as text.

For instance, the 虫 I listed above kinda looks like a bug, which it means. It either looks like a little slug with wings or maybe a snail.
Other examples include: 木、林、and　森
Those mean: Tree, Forest, Woods/Jungle. Take a look. The first looks like a tree, the second is a couple trees, and the third is lots of trees.
日 means Day or Sun. It is derived from a circle, like the Sun looks like. And it's actually a square version of the same symbol used by Astronomers to designate the sun

Another example is 口、which means mouth or exit (出口 - the first in this being to leave)
Of course, it's not all entirely intuitive, but a lot of them work this way.

学園 means university. The first means like knowledge or learning (学), the second meaning garden (園). So, a college is a knowledge garden or learning garden, a place where learning sprouts from. 学 also kinda looks like someone having an idea, right? It's made of 子, meaning child, and then that top part is kinda like knowledge coming outta the head.

So, sometimes it's possible to READ Japanese without even being able to pronounce it, if you have a good idea what some of the radicals mean.

I basically google stuff I hear in anime, and I also use that Jisho site when I see a Kanji I don't recognize.

I wish I could really get into the spoken Japanese, though. Problem I have with that is the same I have with spoken English. Although I'm far from deaf, I have a problem /interpreting/ sounds (a lot of the time, it's a SOUND, not a phonetic), so even in English, I often watch shows with subtitles.
It's too bad fansubbed anime doesn't have BOTH Japanese CC and English subs. I'd probably be able to pick up a lot more if it did.

But, I remember back when I was a kid, I thought the word "able" was "avle" for years.
I fuck up most often with B/P, F/V, B/V, Sh/Ch, and N/M
Occasionally R/W or R/L, K/G, and a few others

So, sadly, just listening to Japanese doesn't always work, I kinda need to read along in any language, unless I'm so fluent I can "predict" possible next words and basically do "real-time correction" for things that literally don't make any sense (like things that aren't even words).
